Comparative analysis of active contour and convolutional neural network in rapid left-ventricle volume quantification using echocardiographic imaging.

In cardiology, ultrasound is often used to diagnose heart disease associated with myocardial infarction. This study aims to develop robust segmentation techniques for segmenting the left ventricle (LV) in ultrasound images to check myocardium movement during heartbeat. The proposed technique utilizes machine learning (ML) techniques such as the active contour (AC) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for segmentation. Medical experts determine the consistency between the proposed ML approach, which is a state-of-the-art deep learning method, and the manual segmentation approach. These meth

How to Extract More Information With Less Burden: Fundus Image Classification and Retinal Disease Localization With Ophthalmologist Intervention.

Image classification using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) outperforms other state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, attention can be visualized as a heatmap to improve the explainability of results of a CNN. We designed a framework that can generate heatmaps reflecting lesion regions precisely. We generated initial heatmaps by using a gradient-based classification activation map (Grad-CAM). We assume that these Grad-CAM heatmaps correctly reveal the lesion regions; then we apply the attention mining technique to these heatmaps to obtain integrated heatmaps. Moreover, we assume that these Gra

Combining analysis of multi-parametric MR images into a convolutional neural network: Precise target delineation for vestibular schwannoma treatment planning.

Manual delineation of vestibular schwannoma (VS) by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is required for diagnosis, radiosurgery dose planning, and follow-up tumor volume measurement. A rapid and objective automatic segmentation method is required, but problems have been encountered due to the low through-plane resolution of standard VS MR scan protocols and because some patients have non-homogeneous cystic areas within their tumors. In this study, we retrospectively collected multi-parametric MR images from 516 patients with VS; these were extracted from the Gamma Knife radiosurgery planning syste

Computer aided diagnosis for suspect keratoconus detection.

PURPOSE: To develop a stable and low-cost computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system for early keratoconus detection for clinical use. METHODS: The CAD combines a custom-made mathematical model, a feedforward neural network (FFN) and a Grossberg-Runge Kutta architecture to detect clinical and suspect keratoconus. It was applied to retrospective data of 851 subjects for whom corneal elevation and thickness data was available. These data were divided into four groups: a control group (312 eyes) with bilateral normal tomography, keratoconus suspect (77 eyes) with a clinically diagnosed keratoconus in

A multi-context CNN ensemble for small lesion detection.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for the detection of small lesions in digital medical images. Our approach is based on a multi-context ensemble of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), aiming at learning different levels of image spatial context and improving detection performance. The main innovation behind the proposed method is the use of multiple-depth CNNs, individually trained on image patches of different dimensions and then combined together. In this way, the final ensemble is able to find and locate abnormalities on the images by exploiting both the local features and the sur

Using Neural Networks for Diagnosing in Dermatology.

The paper deals with neural networks for decision support in diagnosing in dermatology. There were several iterations during development. We classified six diseases using ANN: (1) Psoriasis, (2) Seborrheic dermatitis, (3) Lichen planus, (4) Pityriasis rosea, (5) Cronic dermatitis, (6) Pityriasis rubra pilaris. At first, we used all 35 attributes to conclude skin disease diagnosis with the accuracy of 96.9%. Then, we reduced the set of analyzed attributes by Pearson correlation approach to eight attributes and increased the accuracy to 98.64%. Data collection time was reduced. Thereby, the spee

DropConnected neural networks trained on time-frequency and inter-beat features for classifying heart sounds.

OBJECTIVE: Automatic heart sound analysis has the potential to improve the diagnosis of valvular heart diseases in the primary care phase, as well as in countries where there is neither the expertise nor the equipment to perform echocardiograms. An algorithm has been trained, on the PhysioNet open-access heart sounds database, to classify heart sounds as normal or abnormal. APPROACH: The heart sounds are segmented using an open-source algorithm based on a hidden semi-Markov model. Following this, the time-frequency behaviour of a single heartbeat is characterized by using a novel implementati

A two-layered classifier based on the radial basis function for the screening of thalassaemia.

The thalassaemias are blood disorders with hereditary transmission. Their distribution is global, with particular incidence in areas affected by malaria. Their diagnosis is mainly based on haematologic and genetic analyses. The aim of this study was to differentiate between persons with the thalassaemia trait and normal subjects by inspecting characteristics of haemochromocytometric data. The paper proposes an original method that is useful in screening activity for thalassaemia classification. A complete working system with a friendly graphical user interface is presented. CT synthesis from MR images using frequency attention conditional generative adversarial network.

Magnetic resonance (MR) image-guided radiotherapy is widely used in the treatment planning of malignant tumors, and MR-only radiotherapy, a representative of this technique, requires synthetic computed tomography (sCT) images for effective radiotherapy planning. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have shown remarkable performance in generating sCT images. However, CNN-based models tend to synthesize more low-frequency components and the pixel-wise loss function usually used to optimize the model can result in blurred images. To address these problems, a frequency attention conditional generat

Information bottleneck-based Hebbian learning rule naturally ties working memory and synaptic updates.

Deep neural feedforward networks are effective models for a wide array of problems, but training and deploying such networks presents a significant energy cost. Spiking neural networks (SNNs), which are modeled after biologically realistic neurons, offer a potential solution when deployed correctly on neuromorphic computing hardware. Still, many applications train SNNs offline, and running network training directly on neuromorphic hardware is an ongoing research problem. The primary hurdle is that back-propagation, which makes training such artificial deep networks possible, is biologically im

EGA-DTA: An Energetic-Geometric Augmented Graph Neural Network With Target-Conditional Gating for DTA Prediction.

Drug-target affinity (DTA) prediction plays an important role in virtual screening. However, many graph-based DTA models represent molecular bonds solely as discrete bond types and combine drug and protein features through simple concatenation. We propose EGA-DTA, a graph neural network augmented with energetic and geometric edge features and target-conditional gating. EGA-DTA characterizes ligand bonds using bond dissociation energy (BDE) and conformer-derived bond length (BL), integrates graph-based and fingerprint-based drug representations, and employs a protein-derived gating mechanism to

Evaluating Depth-Based Human Pose Estimation in Real-World Nursing Home Environments.

Human pose estimation in real-world indoor environments remains challenging due to privacy concerns, occlusions, varying numbers of people, and noisy sensor data. In this work, we investigate pose estimation from depth images captured over an extended period in a nursing home setting. We explore multiple input representations, including depth-only and silhouette-based representations, as well as depth-based Sobel gradient features. To systematically analyze the impact of model complexity and input representation, we design an experimental framework comparing lightweight Convolutional Neural Ne

MultiNet: Improving Gaze Estimation via Face-to-Camera Distance and Multi-Branch Learning.

We present MultiNet, a multi-branch pipeline that directly predicts the gaze vector or the point of gaze from multiple modalities derived from a single camera capture. In particular, we address the under-explored use of metric face-to-camera distance estimated from a conventional RGB web camera for appearance-based gaze estimation, in contrast to many distance-aware alternatives which require depth sensors, stereo rigs, or additional hardware. The proposed method employs a convolutional neural network (CNN) with attentional feature fusion and integrates cropped face images, left and right eye

From heatmaps to language: Explainable skin cancer diagnosis using CNN-VLM integration with an expert-annotated dataset.

Skin cancer diagnosis relies on visual interpretation of lesion morphology, yet most deep learning models function as black boxes with limited clinical interpretability. This study presents an explainable diagnostic framework that integrates a fine-tuned Xception network with a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) for skin lesion classification and a domain-adapted vision-language model (VLM) for generating clinically meaningful explanations. The classifier was trained on a preprocessed and augmented HAM10000 dataset, while Grad-CAM++ was employed to highlight discriminative lesion regi

Two-stage cylindrical magnetic localization with neural network calibration for wearable capsule endoscopy.

Accurate localization of wireless capsule endoscopy is essential for reliable gastrointestinal diagnosis, yet magnetic tracking systems are often degraded by sensor distortions, misalignment, and patient motion in wearable settings. This study presents a magnetic localization framework that combines cylindrical magnetic field modelling with neural network-based sensor calibration to improve robustness under wearable operating conditions. By exploiting the structural properties of cylindrical magnetic field representations, the proposed approach decouples axial and transverse components of the

Forecasting the prevalence of epilepsy in low- and middle-income countries to 2050 using a hybrid deep neural network-transformer modeling framework: insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a major public health challenge affecting individuals of all ages, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Reliable prevalence projections are critical for healthcare planning and resource allocation. This study aimed to forecast the prevalence of epilepsy and its trends in LMICs by age, sex, year, and income level by 2050. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2023, we projected the prevalence and number of idiopathic and secondary epilepsy cases in LMICs from 2024 to 2050. We developed a hybrid deep neural network (DNN)-Tra

[THE STUDY OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS KNOWLEDGE FATIGUE AND THE LEVEL OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OF STUDENTS USING NEURAL NETWORKS].

The relevance of the study is as follows. Traditional methods of pedagogy do not allow objective and continuous monitoring of the emotional state of each student. The teacher usually relies on subjective observations - facial expressions behavior in a group - which may be inaccurate. At the same time modern technologies provide new opportunities: cameras and sensors backed by AI algorithms are able to automatically recognize facial expressions voice intonations and other signs of an emotional state. There are already commercial solutions for facial emotion recognition which have been used in m

From debris to data: benchmarking state-of-the-art computer vision models for intelligent valorization of construction and demolition waste.

Automating construction and demolition waste (CDW) sorting remains difficult because materials vary widely in shape, scale, appearance, and often occur in heavy clutter. Existing datasets fall short of capturing this complexity, which limits the reliability of current computer vision models. This study presents a benchmark dataset of 408 high-resolution CDW images containing nearly 10,000 annotated objects across seven material categories (brick, concrete, glass, metal, paper, plastic, and wood). Images were collected from skip bins, active construction and demolition sites, and municipal soli

A unified multi-stream diffusion framework for robust video camouflaged object detection.

Video Camouflaged Object Detection (VCOD) aims to identify and segment objects in videos that blend seamlessly with their surroundings. This task remains highly challenging due to indistinct object boundaries and the scarcity of discriminative features caused by low foreground-background contrast. To address these challenges, we propose a unified multi-stream diffusion framework that leverages the strong representational capacity and iterative denoising mechanism of diffusion models to handle weak boundaries and blurred content in camouflaged scenes. A simple yet efficient Timestep Noise Adapt

Three-Dimensional Object Perception Can Emerge From Predictive Learning.

How do infants develop the ability to perceive objects in a 3D world? The theory of core knowledge suggests infants employ a few principles, such as cohesion, continuity, rigidity, and contact, to guide inference of objects. However, it is challenging to answer how object perception can be learned with similar constraints faced by infants and whether these principles are sufficient for the learning, solely based on studies of infant behavior. We hypothesize that the construct of objects emerges to serve the purpose of efficient prediction, and tested the computational sufficiency of these prin
