Long-term stimulation of cardiac vagal preganglionic neurons reduces blood pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

BACKGROUND: Arterial hypertension is associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Different interventional strategies have been implemented in recent years for the reduction of sympathetic activity in patients with hypertension. However, the therapeutic benefit of increasing vagal tone in hypertensive patients remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: Here, we describe the effects of long-term activation of vagal neural pathways on arterial pressure, heart rate arterial pressure variability and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive

Spectral heart rate variability in rats with cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis treated with cyclooxygenase inhibitors.

The pathogenesis of cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis (CP-HC) is complex, involving the im- pact of many systemically and locally released agents on autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, that affects bladder functioning. The purpose of our study was to provide an indirect evaluation of ANS functional status in experimental CP-HC model, involving prostaglandin synthesis block resulting from administration of cyclooxygenase inhibitors. The ANS activity was estimated through the spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in CP-HC rats divided into three study groups: 1-contr

Regulation of cardiac afferent excitability in ischemia.

The heart at the time of Sir William Harvey originally was thought to be an insensate organ. Today, however, we know that this organ is innervated by sensory nerves that course centrally though mixed nerve pathways that also contain parasympathetic or sympathetic motor nerves. Angina or cardiac pain is now well recognized as a pressure-like pain that occurs during myocardial ischemia when coronary artery blood flow is interrupted. Sympathetic (or spinal) afferent fibers that are either finely myelinated or unmyelinated are responsible for the transmission of information to the brain that ultim

The prognostic value of heart rate variability in the elderly, changing the perspective: from sympathovagal balance to chaos theory.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the temporal beat-to-beat variation in successive RR intervals on an electrocardiographic (ECG) recording and it reflects the regulation of the heart rate (HR) by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). HRV analysis is a noninvasive tool for the assessment of autonomic function that gained momentum in the late 1980s when its clinical relevance as a predictor of mortality was established by a milestone study by Kleiger et al. in patients with postacute myocardial infarction. In the last few decades, the increasing availability of commercial ECG devices offering HRV a

Negative chronotropic and parasympatholytic effects of alinidine on canine sinus node and AV junction.

The direct effects of alinidine (N-allyl-clonidine) on the sinus node and atrioventricular (AV) junction were studied in 18 anesthetized dogs. Stimulus frequency-response curves to right stellate ganglion and right cervical vagus stimulations as well as responses to norepinephrine or acetylcholine were determined before and after selective perfusion of alinidine into the sinus node artery. Alinidine (1 microgram/ml) had no effect on spontaneous sinus rate [148 +/- 5 (SE) beats/min]. However, alinidine concentrations of 5, 10, and 25 micrograms/ml produced significant (P less than 0.05) sinus s

A Descriptive Review on the Prevalence of Gastrointestinal Disturbances and Their Multiple Associations in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background and Objectives: Gastrointestinal disturbances have been frequently, but not unanimously, reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) individuals. Thus, digestive symptoms, such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and pain have been reported to correlate to the various maladaptive behaviors in ASD children, such as irritability, social withdrawal, stereotypy, hyperactivity, and even language regression. In this context, the present study provides an overview on the prevalence of the gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in ASD and the correlation between these and ASD symptoms an

Psychological stress and tumor progression: Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic implications (Review).

Psychological stress contributes to tumor progression through a number of biological pathways. Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system induces the release of stress-related mediators, including catecholamines and glucocorticoids, which regulate tumor development and metastasis. The present review summarizes the molecular mechanisms underlying stress-mediated cancer progression at the cellular, immune and neural levels. At the cellular level, stress hormones modulate tumor cell proliferation, autophagy, metabolic reprogramming and stemness mainte

Attenuation of short-term autonomic cardiovascular responses with advancing gestational age.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy induces profound cardiovascular adaptations, including changes in vascular resistance, cardiac output, and heart rate, which are partly regulated by the autonomic nervous system. Although a shift toward reduced parasympathetic activity has been reported, the longitudinal evolution of autonomic function and its responsiveness to physiological stressors across gestation remain incompletely defined. This study aimed to characterize trimester-specific changes in autonomic regulation and reactivity. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal cohort, 67 healthy pregnant women

Remembering what did not happen: the role of hypnosis in memory recall and false memories formation.

Memory recall is subject to errors that can lead to the formation of false memories. Several factors affect memory processes, such as attention deficits or emotional distress. Additionally, cardiovascular diseases may lead to cognitive decline and memory loss, also increasing the occurrence of false events recall. Hypnosis has proved to affect the autonomic nervous system, positively impacting the cardiovascular response. Hypnosis has also been suggested as a tool to enhance memory and autobiographical events recall in both healthy and unhealthy individuals; however, this approach has led to s

Pilot Trial on the Effects of Propranolol on Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Heart Rate Variability as a Treatment Response Biomarker.

Background: Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, which can impact social interactions, exacerbate social communication deficits, and decrease the quality of life. GI symptoms have been shown to be correlated with the autonomic nervous system and endocrine response to stress in some people with ASD. Furthermore, propranolol, a central and peripheral beta-adrenergic antagonist that inhibits the stress response, has been shown to provide GI relief for some individuals with ASD, but not others. This pilot study examined whether baseline (i

Cardiac autonomic control in Rett syndrome: Insights from heart rate variability analysis.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare and severe neurological disorder mainly affecting females, usually linked to methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene mutations. Manifestations of RTT typically include loss of purposeful hand skills, gait and motor abnormalities, loss of spoken language, stereotypic hand movements, epilepsy, and autonomic dysfunction. Patients with RTT have a higher incidence of sudden death than the general population. Literature data indicate an uncoupling between measures of breathing and heart rate control that could offer insight into the mechanisms that lead to greater vul

Aberrant autonomic pattern during the post-exercise recovery phase in long QT syndrome patients.

OBJECTIVES: It is well-established that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in arrhythmogenesis. During and after exercise the ANS is particularly active, and since long QT syndrome (LQTS) patients have an increased risk of lethal arrhythmias during physical activity, it is important to investigate the autonomic function in these patients. In this study we investigate the ANS response during and after exercise in LQTS patients and healthy age and sex matched controls. METHODS: Forty-four genotype-verified adult LQTS patients and forty-four healthy age- and sex-matched cont

Short-term effects of a 3-week interval training program on heart rate variability in chronic heart failure. A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Exaggerated sympathetic nervous system activity associated with low heart rate variability (HRV) is considered to trigger cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death. Regular exercise training is efficient to improve autonomic balance. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to verify the superiority of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to enhance HRV, cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiac function as compared with moderate intensity continuous training (MICT) in a short, intense cardiac rehabilitation program. METHODS: This was a prospective, monocentric, evaluator-blinded, randomised (1:1) study wi

Vagotomy ameliorates islet morphofunction and body metabolic homeostasis in MSG-obese rats.

The parasympathetic nervous system is important for β-cell secretion and mass regulation. Here, we characterized involvement of the vagus nerve in pancreatic β-cell morphofunctional regulation and body nutrient homeostasis in 90-day-old monosodium glutamate (MSG)-obese rats. Male newborn Wistar rats received MSG (4 g/kg body weight) or saline [control (CTL) group] during the first 5 days of life. At 30 days of age, both groups of rats were submitted to sham-surgery (CTL and MSG groups) or subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (Cvag and Mvag groups). The 90-day-old MSG rats presented obesity, hyperinsuline…
