Crossed unilateral lesions of medial forebrain bundle and either inferior temporal or frontal cortex impair object recognition memory in Rhesus monkeys.

In monkeys, section of the fornix, amygdala and anterior temporal stem results in a severe anterograde amnesia. Immunolesions of the cholinergic cells of the basal forebrain suggest that this amnesia is a result of isolating the inferior temporal cortex and medial temporal lobe from their cholinergic basal forebrain afferents. In this experiment, six monkeys were trained in a delayed match-to-sample task and then received a section of the medial forebrain bundle in one hemisphere and an ablation of either the frontal or inferior temporal cortex in the opposite hemisphere. All the animals were

Hemispheric perception of emotional valence from facial expressions.

The authors previously reported that normal subjects are better at discriminating happy from neutral faces when the happy face is located to the viewer's right of the neutral face; conversely, discrimination of sad from neutral faces is better when the sad face is shown to the left, supporting a role for the left hemisphere in processing positive valence and for the right hemisphere in processing negative valence. Here, the authors extend this same task to subjects with unilateral cerebral damage (31 right, 28 left). Subjects with right damage performed worse when discriminating sad faces show

Response covariation. The relationship between correct academic responding and problem behavior.

This article examined the relationship between the accuracy of academic responding and aggression for two boys with mild mental retardation. Their teacher reported low rates of correct responding and high rates of aggressive behavior during spelling instruction. A functional analysis showed that aggression was escape maintained. Following the functional analysis, participants were tested on relations between printed, photographic, and dictated stimuli corresponding to their spelling words. On pretests, they were unable to match printed words to their photographs or to their dictated names; the

Age differences and similarities in patterns of cerebral hemispheric asymmetry.

Younger (M age = 20.4 years) and older (M age = 70.7 years) adults participated in 3 visual half-field experiments. These were designed to examine specific aspects of hemispheric asymmetry: (a) hemispheric dominance for phonetic-linguistic processing (as measured by identification of non-word trigrams), (b) hemispheric differences in trigram processing strategy, (c) characteristic perceptual biases thought to reflect hemispheric arousal asymmetries, and (d) hemispheric dominance for processing emotions shown on faces. Patterns of left-right asymmetries were comparable for older and younger par

Visible persistence decay rates for schizophrenics and substance abusers.

Information-processing deficits are consistently reported for schizophrenics. The findings from the majority of psychophysical tasks indicate that the deficit is specific to schizophrenics and thus may represent a marker for schizophrenia. The present study evaluated for specificity of impairment by including controls using methadone. A two-pulsed forced choice information-processing task that required the detection of a line or a blank-field during an interstimulus interval (ISI) indexed efficiency of processing (i.e., visible persistence). There were 19 schizophrenic, 9 schizoaffective, 8 de

Mechanisms for accessing lexical representations for output: evidence from a category-specific semantic deficit.

We report the performance of a neurologically impaired patient, JJ, whose oral reading of words exceeded his naming and comprehension performance for the same words--a pattern of performance that has been previously presented as evidence for "direct, nonsemantic, lexical" routes to output in reading. However, detailed analyses of JJ's reading and comprehension revealed two results that do not follow directly from the "direct route" hypothesis: (1) He accurately read aloud all orthophonologically regular words and just those irregular words for which he demonstrated some comprehension (as indic

Somesthetic-visual matching disorders in right and left hemisphere-damaged patients.

Forty-nine patients with recent right (RHD) and left (LHD) hemispheric vascular lesions were compared on a task of somesthetic-visual matching of meaningful objects and of meaningless shapes. A selective impairment for shapes was found in RHD subjects, while LHD patients were impaired in object matching. This double dissociation conforms to the classical distinction between apperceptive and associative agnosia, and extends to the somesthetic modality the "double dissociation" between left and right hemispheric lesions and associative and apperceptive recognition disorders, which has been found

Lesion localization in acquired deficits of emotional expression and comprehension.

This study investigated the relationship between intrahemispheric location of lesion and disturbances of emotional expression and comprehension. Twenty-eight right hemisphere strokes, 18 left hemisphere strokes, and 20 controls were examined on a standardized test of the expression, repetition, and comprehension of emotional prosody as well as the visual recognition of emotional situations and faces. The patients were classified into aprosodic syndromes according to the test scores. The lesions were independently traced, and overlapped for each aprosodic syndrome. The results, for lesions in e

Childhood prosopagnosia.

K.D. has been unable to recognize people's faces since sustaining cerebral injury in infancy. Investigation of this disorder carried out when K.D. was aged 8 to 11 years showed that although her basic visual abilities were impaired, they were no poorer than those of other children who recognized faces without difficulty. K.D. had learned to read, but had not regained ability to recognize people's faces; instead she relied primarily on voices as a cue to person recognition. There was no evidence of any degree of overt or covert recognition of familiar faces, and K.D. also experienced problems i

Amnesia for the McCollough effect following unilateral electroconvulsive therapy: implications for laterality.

The hemispheric lateralization of retrograde amnesia following unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was measured by a novel nonverbal probe, the McCollough effect, which allowed equal and exclusive access to each hemisphere. Alternating exposure to perpendicular gratings of complementary colors (e.g., red vertical stripes alternated with green horizontal stripes) will cause subsequently presented black and white gratings to appear colored hours or even days later (the McCollough effect). Three of the patients examined (3 of 10) lost the effect in just the half visual field contralateral

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in the hereditary ataxias and spinal degenerations.

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (PRVEP) were evaluated in 24 patients from 18 separate families with various forms of hereditary ataxia and spinal degeneration. Abnormally delayed latencies were found in 3 of 5 patients with classic Friedreich's ataxia, 1 patient with dominant spastic paraparesis, and 1 patient with recessive dentatorubrospinal degeneration. Fifteen other patients with several different types of dominant and recessive hereditary ataxias had normal PRVEP latencies, including 1 patient with bilateral optic atrophy. Testing of PRVEP will be useful in the clinical deline

To what extent does nonanalytic reasoning contribute to visual learning in cytopathology?

BACKGROUND: Acquisition of visual interpretation skills in cytopathology may involve 2 strategies. Analytic strategies require trainees to base their interpretive decisions on carefully considered and often exhaustive cytomorphologic feature lists, a process that can be time-consuming and inefficient. In contrast, nonanalytic pattern recognition strategies are rarely encouraged during training, even though this approach is characteristic of expert diagnostic behavior. This study evaluated the potential role of nonanalytic learning in cytopathology as an efficient alternative to analytic traini

Clutter modulates the representation of target objects in the human occipitotemporal cortex.

Target objects required for goal-directed behavior are typically embedded within multiple irrelevant objects that may interfere with their encoding. Most neuroimaging studies of high-level visual cortex have examined the representation of isolated objects, and therefore, little is known about how surrounding objects influence the neural representation of target objects. To investigate the effect of different types of clutter on the distributed responses to target objects in high-level visual areas, we used fMRI and manipulated the type of clutter. Specifically, target objects (i.e., a face and

Right posterior cortical functions in a tumour patient series.

It is standardly believed that the localisation of cognitive function by means of impairments arising from cortical tumour is not possible as the functional defects that result are mild and unspecific. These assumptions were not supported in an investigation of four processes generally sensitive to right posterior cortical lesions, when patients with parieto-occipital lesions were compared with prefrontal ones. In three of the tests loading on the individual processes - Reaching Accuracy, Star Cancellation, Fragmented Letters and Cube Analysis - parieto-occipital impairments were found in the

A case of persistent visual hallucinations of faces following LSD abuse: a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging study.

In this study, we report the case of a patient experiencing hallucinations of faces that could be reliably precipitated by looking at trees. Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), we found that face hallucinations were associated with increased and decreased neural activity in a number of cortical regions. Within the same fusiform face area, however, we found significant decreased and increased neural activity according to whether the patient was experiencing hallucinations or veridical perception of faces, respectively. These findings may indicate key differences in how hallucina

The fuzzy boundaries of apperceptive agnosia.

Following a trauma that mainly involved the right hemisphere, a 21-year-old girl showed a profound impairment in visual object recognition, without language and intellectual deficit. Her elementary sensory functions were preserved and she performed in the normal range on visual matching tasks, on taks requiring to detect small differences between similar complex shapes and in copying drawings, without any evidence of a line by line approach. Her deficit emerged with tests that, though not implying identification of meaning, demanded to disentangle a form from a confused background and to achie

Asenapine improves phencyclidine-induced object recognition deficits in the rat: evidence for engagement of a dopamine D1 receptor mechanism.

RATIONALE: Cognitive deficits are common in schizophrenia. Asenapine is an atypical antipsychotic approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in adults for treatment of schizophrenia or acute treatment, as monotherapy or adjunct therapy to lithium or valproate, of manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder. OBJECTIVES: Based on the receptor pharmacology of asenapine, the current study assessed the efficacy and mechanism of action of asenapine to improve a subchronic phencyclidine (PCP)-induced deficit in visual recognition memory using the novel object recognition (NOR) paradigm in the

Semi-automated identification of individual big brown bats via collagen-elastin patterns in the wing membrane.

Collagen-elastin (CE) bundle patterns in the wing membrane have been used to identify individual bats; however, this method has not been widely adopted, likely owing to the laborious nature of manually comparing wing images through visual inspection. We tested the effectiveness of using an accessible, feature-based, pattern-recognition software-HotSpotter-to identify individuals using patterns of CE bundles in the bat wing. We collected photos from 24 adult (n = 192 photos) big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and their direct offspring (n = 34 pups; n = 136 photos) by illuminating the ventral su

Integrating neuroscientific data across spatiotemporal scales.

A major challenge confronting neuroscientists is associated with the multiple spatial and temporal scales of investigation of neural structure and function. I shall discuss the use of computational neural modeling as one method to bridge some of the different spatial and temporal levels. This approach will be illustrated using large-scale, neurobiologically realistic network models of auditory and visual pattern recognition that relate neuronal dynamics to fMRI data. It will be demonstrated that the models are capable of exhibiting the salient features of both electrophysiological neuronal act

The inferior longitudinal fasciculus: anatomy, function and surgical considerations.

The inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) is a large association white matter tract that interconnects, in a bidirectional manner, the occipital cortex to anterior temporal structures. In view of both its pattern of cortical projections and its recently evidenced multilayered anatomical organization, the ILF has been supposed to be vital for maintaining a wide range of cognitive and affective processes operating on the visual modality. As tumors commonly damage the temporal cortex, an updated knowledge of the functional anatomy of this ventral tract is needed to better map and monitor on-line
