Human enterovirus species A (HEV-A) consists of at least 16 members of different serotypes that are known to be the causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), herpangina, and other diseases, such as respiratory disease and polio-like flaccid paralysis. Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) are the major causative agents of HFMD. CVA5, CVA6, CVA10, and CVA12 mainly cause herpangina or are occasionally involved with sporadic cases of HFMD. We have previously shown that human scavenger receptor class B, member 2 (SCARB2) is a cellular receptor for EV71 and CVA16. Usi

The domestic chicken was used as an experimental model in which to demonstrate morphological and functional relationships of nasal organ systems, principally of mucous systems. Mucous secretions of olfactory, respiratory, lacrimal, and accessory areas were found to have clear histochemical differences, yet were sufficiently miscible in normal circumstances to form an unbroken, synchronously moving sheet. Changes induced experimentally in host physiology did not all affect the mucous components of given areas in the same way or to the same degree. Mucosal changes were produced by the following

PURPOSE: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a serious concern for epilepsy patients. DBA/2 mice are proposed as a SUDEP model, because these mice exhibit respiratory arrest (RA) after audiogenic seizures (AGSs), and RA is also implicated in human SUDEP. Respiratory mechanisms are modulated, in part, by serotonin. Therefore we evaluated the effects of serotoninergic agents on RA incidence in DBA/2 mice.
METHODS: DBA/2 mice (75%) exhibited AGS and RA, and approximately 99% of animals could be resuscitated. The mice exhibiting RA were given a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, f

BACKGROUND: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH, Forestier disease) is in most cases a harmless, asymptomatic disease characterized by a massive, noninflammatory ossification with intensive formation of osteophytes affecting ligaments, tendons, and fasciae, especially of the spinal column. If the disease becomes symptomatic at all, the leading complaints will usually be dysphagia in the sense of a lump in the throat and difficulty in swallowing. However, in rare cases the osteophytes may influence the laryngeal function ranging from hoarseness and immobility of the vocal cord to lif

BACKGROUND: Phrenic nerve infiltration has been described in as many as 33% of advanced thymomas; en bloc resection causes diaphragmatic loss of function, with detrimental effects on pulmonary function. We report the outcomes of selected patients operated on for invasive thymoma with a nerve-sparing technique.
METHODS: From 1990 to 2015 we used nerve-sparing surgery with the intention to treat all patients with advanced stage thymomas without preoperative evidence of hemidiaphragmatic palsy, but with macroscopic evidence of phrenic nerve involvement. All patients underwent adjuvant radiothera

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of bilateral vocal fold immobility (BVCI) in a patient with acromegaly and review the current literature describing this presentation.
DESIGN: Case report and literature review.
SETTING: Academic tertiary care center.
METHODS: English language literature search of online journal databases.
RESULTS: A 56-year-old man presented with 3 months of progressive stridor and shortness of breath. Transnasal flexible endoscopy revealed BVCI. A tracheostomy was performed to secure his airway. Further history was suggestive of acromegaly and imaging demonstrated a pituitary

West Nile virus infection is asymptomatic in most cases. West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease includes encephalitis, meningitis, and/or acute flaccid paralysis. In children, acute flaccid paralysis as the solo presentation of West Nile virus disease is rare. It develops abruptly and progresses rapidly early in the disease course. We report on a 10-year-old child who presented with a slowly progressive left leg flaccid paralysis over 4 weeks. He tested positive for West Nile virus in both blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Spinal MRI showed enhancement of the ventral nerve roots. This was also sup

Neuromuscular monitoring and routine use of reversal agents are key elements in the prevention of residual paralysis. According to a nation-wide survey up to 52 % of anaesthesiologists in France apply regularly neuromuscular monitoring after a single intubating dose of a neuromuscular blocking agent and 74 % in case of repetitive administration. However, reversal is rather the exception than routine and, still according to this survey, the risk of residual paralysis largely underestimated. The development of a new class of reversal agents (cyclodextrins) may further modify the management of ne

Bilateral arytenoid cartilage fixation (ACF) closely resembles vocal cord immobility due to recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP). This study sought to determine the etiologic differences between these two entities and to derive conclusions about treatment. The charts of 218 consecutive adult patients with immobility of both vocal cords requiring surgery for airway restoration were reviewed. The results of laryngeal electromyography and laryngotracheoscopy were used to distinguish ACF from RLNP. In 186 patients (85.3%), RLNP was identified. Of these, 154 paralyses (82.8%) were caused by s

During an 18-month period in a pediatric intensive care unit, nine patients with vocal cord paralysis were identified using flexible bronchoscopy. When tracheally extubated, each child was found to have stridor. The children ranged in age from 17 days to 5 1/2 years. Two patients had unilateral paralysis, but neither required tracheostomy. Seven patients displayed bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis. Of these, six patients required tracheostomy. Surgical injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve was the probable cause in two patients. The other seven patients had neurologic disorders with do
