Injury Patterns and Associated Demographics of Intimate Partner Violence in Older Adults Presenting to U.S. Emergency Departments.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health issue and occurs in intimate relationships regardless of age or sexual orientation. Several studies, most of them relying on small-scale samples, have explored the prevalence and risk factors of IPV in older adults. Still, none have focused on the demographics and injury patterns in older adult victims. Using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) All Injury Program (AIP) data, we performed a retrospective analysis from 2005 through 2015 of the demographics and injuries of older adult IPV patients (>60 years old) pre

External causes of pediatric injury-related emergency department visits in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the types and external causes of pediatric injury-related visits (IRVs) to emergency departments (EDs), in parti … han 11 million ED visits annually. The most common diagnoses for IRVs were open wounds, contusions, sprains and strains, and fractures and dislocations. The leading external causes of IRVs were sports-related injuries, accidental falls, being struck by objects, and motor vehicle collisions. Children with IRVs differed from those who presented for non-IRVs in many cha …

Rising Trends in Wrestling-associated Injuries in Females Presenting to US Emergency Departments.

INTRODUCTION: Wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports among females in the United States (US). However, female wrestling injuries remain poorly characterized. In this study we describe historical and projected national estimates of female wrestling injuries, and compare injury characteristics with those of male wrestlers. METHODS: We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database (2005-2019) to compare national weighted estimates and injury characteristics of male vs female wrestlers presenting to US emergency departments (ED) and projected annual female wr

Veterinarian injuries associated with bovine TB testing livestock in Michigan, 2001.

Testing all the cattle in an entire state with a uniform procedure for each animal affords an opportunity to relate human injury data to a known number of animals handled while carrying out a standardized procedure. Our objective was to describe the type and incidence density of injuries associated with TB-testing a large number of cattle herds, and to delineate the various factors associated with the risk of injury. A survey was mailed to all veterinarians (N = 259) who had completed at least five official bovine TB (bTB) herd tests in Michigan in 2001. We collected data regarding basic demog

Recovery expectations predict recovery in workers with back pain but not other musculoskeletal conditions.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether recovery expectations predict future return-to-work in workers filing injury claims for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Recovery expectations seem to influence recovery and return-to-work after back pain, but their role in other compensable conditions is uncertain. METHODS: All workers' compensation claimants receiving time-loss benefits for a musculoskeletal condition and undergoing return-to-work assessment were enrolled. Claimants completed a work-related recovery expectations ques

MRI-based Predictors and Risk Constellations of Chronic Ankle Instability After Acute Lateral Ankle Sprain: A Multicenter Study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common but under-recognized consequence of acute lateral ankle sprain (LAS), yet early identification of high-risk patients remains challenging. This study aimed to identify independent Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) predictors of CAI assessed following an initial acute LAS and to explore clinically meaningful risk constellations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study included 474 patients with initial acute LAS who underwent ankle MRI within two weeks. Patients were classified as CAI or "Coper" (recovered

Reproducibility of a modified posterior talar glide test in ankle sprain conditions: a cross-sectional analysis on chronic ankle instability, copers, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: The posterior talar glide test (PTGT) is recommended for ankle sprain assessment, but it has limited scientific support. Therefore, the aims of this study were to assess the reproducibility of PTGT in two conditions: 1) the clinical experience of the clinician and 2) in a modified setting using a referential horizontal plane in three clinical conditions (chronic ankle instability (CAI), copers, and healthy controls). METHODS: Twenty-eight participants were recruited. PTGT measurements were performed using two raters, i.e., novice and experienced, and performed twice with and witho

Ankle Sprains Risk Factors in a Sample of French Firefighters: A Preliminary Prospective Study.

CONTEXT: Firefighters participating in mandatory physical exercise sessions are exposed to a high risk of ankle sprain injury. Although both physiological and psychological risk factors have been identified, few prospective studies considered the complex interaction of these factors in firefighters. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively determine whether intrinsic physical risk factors and work-related environments predict ankle sprains occurring during on-duty physical exercise in firefighters during an 8-month follow-up period. DESIGN: Prospective. SETTING: Fire Department and Rescue Service. PART

Recovery From a First-Time Lateral Ankle Sprain and the Predictors of Chronic Ankle Instability: A Prospective Cohort Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in motor control may predicate the paradigm of chronic ankle instability (CAI) that can develop in the year after an acute lateral ankle sprain (LAS) injury. No prospective analysis is currently available identifying the mechanisms by which these impairments develop and contribute to long-term outcome after LAS. PURPOSE: To identify the motor control deficits predicating CAI outcome after a first-time LAS injury. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: Eighty-two individuals were recruited after sustaining a first-time LAS injury. Sever
