A transdisciplinary view on curiosity beyond linguistic humans: animals, infants, and artificial intelligence.

Curiosity is a core driver for life-long learning, problem-solving and decision-making. In a broad sense, curiosity is defined as the intrinsically motivated acquisition of novel information. Despite a decades-long history of curiosity research and the earliest human theories arising from studies of laboratory rodents, curiosity has mainly been considered in two camps: 'linguistic human' and 'other'. This is despite psychology being heritable, and there are many continuities in cognitive capacities across the animal kingdom. Boundary-pushing cross-disciplinary debates on curiosity are lacking,

Text Reading Fluency and Text Reading Comprehension Do Not Rely on the Same Abilities in University Students With and Without Dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning condition characterized by severe and persistent difficulties in written word recognition, decoding and spelling that may impair both text reading fluency and text reading comprehension. Despite this, some adults with dyslexia successfully complete their university studies even though graduating from university involves intensive exposure to long and complex texts. This study examined the cognitive skills underlying both text reading comprehension and text reading fluency (TRF) in a sample of 54 university students with dyslexia and 63 university s

Automated video interview personality assessments: Reliability, validity, and generalizability investigations.

Organizations are increasingly adopting automated video interviews (AVIs) to screen job applicants despite a paucity of research on their reliability, validity, and generalizability. In this study, we address this gap by developing AVIs that use verbal, paraverbal, and nonverbal behaviors extracted from video interviews to assess Big Five personality traits. We developed and validated machine learning models within (using nested cross-validation) and across three separate samples of mock video interviews (total N = 1,073). Also, we examined their test-retest reliability in a fourth sample (N =

Using 2D video-based pose estimation for automated prediction of autism spectrum disorders in young children.

Clinical research in autism has recently witnessed promising digital phenotyping results, mainly focused on single feature extraction, such as gaze, head turn on name-calling or visual tracking of the moving object. The main drawback of these studies is the focus on relatively isolated behaviors elicited by largely controlled prompts. We recognize that while the diagnosis process understands the indexing of the specific behaviors, ASD also comes with broad impairments that often transcend single behavioral acts. For instance, the atypical nonverbal behaviors manifest through global patterns of

Local field potential decoding of the onset and intensity of acute pain in rats.

Pain is a complex sensory and affective experience. The current definition for pain relies on verbal reports in clinical settings and behavioral assays in animal models. These definitions can be subjective and do not take into consideration signals in the neural system. Local field potentials (LFPs) represent summed electrical currents from multiple neurons in a defined brain area. Although single neuronal spike activity has been shown to modulate the acute pain, it is not yet clear how ensemble activities in the form of LFPs can be used to decode the precise timing and intensity of pain. The
