Herein, we investigated the effects of passive heat stress on human somatosensory processing recorded by somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs). Fifteen healthy subjects received a median nerve stimulation at the left wrist under two thermal conditions: Heat Stress and normothermic Time Control. The latencies and amplitudes of P14, N20, P25, N35, P45, and N60 at C4' and P14, N18, P22, and N30 at Fz were evaluated. Under the Heat Stress condition, SEPs were recorded at normothermic baseline (1st), early in heat stress (2nd), when esophageal temperature had increased by ~1.0°C (3rd) and ~2.0°C (

The feeling of illusory movement is considered important in the study of human behavior because it is deeply related to motor consciousness. However, the neural basis underlying the illusion of movement remains to be understood. Following optimal vibratory stimulation of muscle tendon, certain subjects experience illusory movements while others do not. In the present fMRI study, we sought to uncover the neural basis of illusory movement awareness by contrasting a posteriori these two types of subjects. Examining fMRI data using leave-one-subject-out general linear models and region of interest

Microelectrocorticography (µECoG) provides insights into the cortical organization with high temporal and spatial resolution desirable for better understanding of neural information processing. Here we evaluated the use of µECoG for detailed cortical recording of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in an ovine model. The approach to the cortex was planned using an MRI-based 3D model of the sheep's brain. We describe a minimally extended surgical procedure allowing placement of two different µECoG grids on the somatosensory cortex. With this small craniotomy, the frontal sinus was kept intac

The mushroom body is an insect brain structure required for olfactory learning. Its principal neurons, the Kenyon cells (KCs), form a large cell population. The neuronal populations from which their olfactory input derives (olfactory sensory and projection neurons) can be identified individually by genetic, anatomical, and physiological criteria. We ask whether KCs are similarly identifiable individually, using genetic markers and whole-cell patch-clamp in vivo. We find that across-animal responses are as diverse within the genetically labeled subset as across all KCs in a larger sample. These

The relationships between the chemosensory discharge and glomus cells HIF-1alpha (hypoxia inducible factor 1alpha) in the rat carotid body in vitro were investigated using CO as a tool. Both chemosensory discharge and HIF-1alpha were stimulated by CO, although the former took only a few seconds and the latter a few minutes to develop. These developments were suppressed by light. By using the monochromatic lights, the action spectra were prepared. Lights of 430 nm 590 nm were most effective in suppressing the responses. It is known that these lights are the signature markers for cytochrome oxid

Evidence is emerging for significant inter-hemispheric cortical plasticity in humans, opening important questions about the significance and mechanism for this long range plasticity. In this work, peripheral nerve deafferentation was performed on both the rat forepaw and hindpaw and cortical reorganization was assessed using functional MRI (fMRI). Sensory stimulation of the forepaw or the hindpaw in rats that experienced only partial denervation resulted in activation in only the appropriate, contralateral, primary somatosensory cortex (SI). However, 2-3 weeks following complete denervation of

HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that the changes in single muscle twitch tension (Pt) in a cosmonaut following exposure to long-duration microgravity may have been due to the sarcoplasmic reticulum, while the decrease in maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) relative to the electrically evoked maximal tetanic tension (Po) may reflect a reduction in control neural drive resulting from the voluntary muscle inactivity.
METHODS: The effects of 7-d "dry" water immersion were investigated in six subjects. Changes of contraction properties were studied in the tric

Attenuation of axoplasmic transport in the infraorbital nerve (ION), or transection of this trigeminal (V) branch at birth, results in degradation of the central cellular aggregates related to the mystacial vibrissae. However, blockade of axoplasmic transport does not result in the nearly 90% loss of ION ganglion cells that follows neonatal transection of this nerve. The present study was undertaken to further characterize the response of individual ION axons to attenuation of axoplasmic transport and to compare these effects to the changes observed following nerve transection. Neurobiotin inj

In this study, we analyzed the effect of alpha-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on the neurons of hamster submandibular ganglion (SMG). CGRP induced a small slow-depolarization accompanied with an increase in input resistance in about 60% of tested cells. CGRP enhanced durations of their Ca2+ spikes. The Ca2+ spikes were subdivided into two subgroups according to duration short duration within 1 sec and long duration of more than 1 sec. Forskolin, an activator of adenylate cyclase, mimicked the effects of CGRP. These data indicated that the effects of CGRP on SMG cells were mediated via

Oromandibular dystonia is a focal dystonia involving the masticatory and tongue muscles, causing difficulties in speech or mastication. We treated 13 patients with this condition by injecting diluted lidocaine and alcohol intramuscularly. This method is aimed at reducing muscle spindle afferent activity. The symptoms had been resistant to other therapies such as pharmacotherapy or dental treatment. All patients showed clinical improvement after this therapy with reduced EMG activities in the affected muscles, whereas control injection of normal saline gave no changes in EMG activities. The ove

INTRODUCTION: The role of clinical, MRI and neurophysiological parameters in predicting the outcome of acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is reported.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one patients with ATM were subjected to clinical, MRI, somatosensory and motor evoked potential studies in both upper and lower limbs and concentric needle electromyography. The outcome was defined at the end of 6 months into poor (Barthel Index score <12) and good (> or =12). The relationship of various prognostic variables was evaluated by biserial correlation coefficient and stepwise discriminant analysis.

A modified rotatory chair test is reported in which radial acceleration, generated by eccentric displacement of the subject during constant angular velocity, is exploited as a unilateral stimulation to the otolith organs. During constant angular rate rotation, the test subject is displaced laterally on the rotating turntable by 3.5 cm, so that one labyrinth becomes aligned with the rotatory axis while the second - eccentric - labyrinth is solely exposed to the altered gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). Previously reported results showed that the direction of the response is independent of th

1. Morphine inhibits supraoptic nucleus oxytocin neurones directly and presynaptically via inhibition of afferent noradrenergic endings. 2. We studied whether morphine tolerance/dependence (induced by intracerebroventricular (I.C.V.) morphine infusion) alters the responsiveness of oxytocin neurones to systemic cholecystokinin (CCK), a stimulus which activates oxytocin neurones via the release of noradrenaline. 3. CCK (20 micrograms kg-1, i.v.) increased plasma oxytocin concentrations similarly in urethane-anaesthetized morphine-naive and -dependent rats. In naive rats, I.C.V. (10 micrograms) a

Single nerve-fibre action potentials (APs) were recorded extracellularly from lower human sacral nerve roots, and simultaneous single-fibre impulse patterns of alpha and gamma-motoneurons and secondary muscle spindle afferents were analysed. Identified alpha and gamma-motoneurons fired oscillatory, due to the sustained stretch reflex of the external sphincters induced by an anal catheter (and, possibly, the bladder catheter). The motoneurons and the secondary muscle spindle afferents transiently synchronized their firing upon repetitive touch, pin-prick and dimpling stimulation of the perianal

Electroreception evolved in the catfishes probably as a specialization of the mechanosensory lateral line system. Fibers of the anterior lateral line nerve in catfishes innervate electrosensory ampullary organs and mechanosensory neuromasts of the head lateral line system. The purpose of this study is to determine the projection patterns of the major principal branches of the ALLN and to investigate the topography within the various nuclei of the terminal fields of these different branches. Fibers of the superficial ophthalmic, buccal and hyomandibular branches of the anterior lateral line ner

Although neurons responsive to jaw movements have been identified in most parts of the trigeminal brainstem nuclei, little is known about how this information is relayed to the thalamus and ultimately to the cortex for kinesthetic functions and sensorimotor integration. The present extracellular recording experiments showed that a substantial amount of movement-related information is relayed to the thalamus through the caudal part of subnucleus interpolaris (Vi) in adult cats. Vertical jaw displacements, natural mechanical stimuli, and electrical stimulation of the masseter nerve were used to

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded from rat spinal cord (sSEPs) and cerebral cortex (cSEPs). Stimulus sites included either one or both sural nerve branches having different fiber populations (group A), or distal to a lesion of controlled size of the sural nerve made 1 week earlier (group B). In the two groups of animals, amplitudes of SEPs correlated with the quantity of large myelinated nerve fibers. Peak latencies of sSEPs in group A related to the ratio of sizes of transmitting fibers. sSEPs and cSEPs in both groups A and B could be recorded in a reproducible fashion by s

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) after unilateral stimulation of the tongue were recorded in 20 normal subjects and in 20 patients with peripheral and central lesions of the afferent trigeminal pathway. Potentials were recorded up to 50 msec latency via electrodes placed on the scalp (between C3/4 and T3/4), the tragus and intra-orally with a fronto-central reference. In several instances simultaneous records from facial and masticatory muscles were obtained in order to detect muscle artifacts. (1) Very early components up to 5 msec were contaminated by muscular artifacts arising from mu

To investigate the afferent projections to the flocculus in a nonhuman primate, we injected horseradish peroxidase into one flocculus of six rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and processed their brains according to the tetramethylbenzidine protocol to reveal retrogradely labeled neurons. Labeled neurons were found in a large set of nuclei within the rostral medulla and the pons. The greatest numbers of labeled neurons were in the vestibular complex and the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi. There were neurons labeled bilaterally throughout all the vestibular nuclei except the lateral vestibular nuc
