Feasibility of Diffusion Tensor Imaging for Assessing Functional Recovery in Rats with Olfactory Ensheathing Cell Transplantation After Contusive Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).

BACKGROUND Olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation is a promising treatment for spinal cord injury. Diffusion tensor imaging has been applied to assess various kinds of spinal cord injury. However, it has rarely been used to evaluate the beneficial effects of olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of diffusion tensor imaging in the evaluation of functional recovery in rats with olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation after contusive spinal cord injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS Immunofluorescence staining was performed to determine the purity o

Texture analysis of high resolution MRI allows discrimination between febrile and afebrile initial precipitating injury in mesial temporal sclerosis.

A computational pipeline combining texture analysis and pattern classification algorithms was developed for investigating associations between high-resolution MRI features and histological data. This methodology was tested in the study of dentate gyrus images of sclerotic hippocampi resected from refractory epilepsy patients. Images were acquired using a simple surface coil in a 3.0T MRI scanner. All specimens were subsequently submitted to histological semiquantitative evaluation. The computational pipeline was applied for classifying pixels according to: a) dentate gyrus histological paramet

Motor organization of unilateral polymicrogyria associated with ipsilateral brainstem atrophy - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Polymicrogyria refers to the disruption of normal cerebral cortical development late in neuronal migration or in early cortical organization. Although patients with polymicrogyria feature relatively favorable motor outcomes, polymicrogyric lesions accompanied by extensive unilateral hemispheric atrophy and ipsilateral brainstem atrophy may induce poorer motor outcomes. This study is the first to employ transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to characterize changes to motor organization and white matter tracts induced by polymicrogyria. CASE PRES

Impact of repositioning on brain injury following transcatheter aortic valve replacement with a self-expanding valve.

Repositionable self-expanding valves allow for repositioning during deployment to achieve optimal valve placement. However, the risk of brain injury associated with repositioning, as detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), is unknown. Consecutive patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with repositionable self-expanding valves and receiving DW-MRI before and within 7 days post-TAVR procedure were included. The primary outcomes were incidence, number, total volume, and volume per lesion of the cerebral ischemic lesion in DW-MRI after TAVR. U

Etiology-specific prognostic value of ultra-early diffusion-weighted MRI after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) within 0–6 h after return of spontaneous circulation can detect hypoxic-ischemic brain injury following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Whether ultra-early findings differ by arrest etiology and how they should guide prognostication remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of OHCA survivors who underwent ultra-early DW-MRI (0–6 h); a subset had follow-up scans (72–96 h). Etiology was classified as cardiac or respiratory. We assessed the prognostic performance of qualitative ultra-

Time-resolved laser speckle contrast imaging (TR-LSCI) of cerebral blood flow response to intracranial pressure elevation.

SIGNIFICANCE: Cerebral autoregulation (CA) reflects the dynamic coupling among cerebral blood flow (CBF), intracranial pressure (ICP), and arterial blood pressure (ABP); its failure contributes to secondary brain injury. Existing bedside methods rely on indirect or spatially limited CBF surrogates and cannot resolve microvascular flow dynamics across space, depth, and time. AIM: To develop, optimize, and apply a scalable, noncontact time-resolved laser speckle contrast imaging (TR-LSCI) platform for depth-sensitive, high-speed, wide-field CBF imaging during controlled ICP perturbations. Silent Stroke in Adult Cardiac Surgery: Mechanisms, Clinical Impact, and Preventive Strategies.

Background and Objectives: Overt perioperative stroke remains a feared complication of adult cardiac surgery. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI-MRI) has revealed a more prevalent form of cerebral injury, termed silent stroke or silent brain injury (SBI). Covert ischemic lesions occur without focal neurological deficits but are increasingly associated with postoperative delirium, cognitive decline, and elevated long-term cerebrovascular risk. Despite growing recognition, the true burden, mechanisms, and clinical relevance of SBI remain incompletely integrated into perioperative

Aberrant dynamic Functional-Structural connectivity coupling of Large-scale brain networks in poststroke motor dysfunction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke may lead to widespread functional and structural reorganization in the brain. Several studies have reported a potential correlation between functional network changes and structural network changes after stroke. However, it is unclear how functional-structural relationships change dynamically over the course of one resting-state fMRI scan in patients following a stroke; furthermore, we know little about their relationships with the severity of motor dysfunction. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate dynamic functional and structural connectivity (FC-SC) coup

The Evolving Role of Neuroimaging in Traumatic Brain Injury Research.

Neuroimaging technologies such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been widely adopted in the clinical diagnosis and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly at the more acute and severe levels of injury. Additionally, a number of advanced applications of MRI have been employed in TBI-related clinical research with great promise, and researchers have used these techniques to better understand the underlying mechanisms, progression of secondary injury and tissue perturbation over time, and relation of focal and diffuse injury to outcome. However, the

Hsp70.1 carbonylation induces lysosomal cell death for lifestyle-related diseases.

Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) constitute increasingly prevalent disorders. Individuals with type 2 diabetes are well-known to be susceptible to Alzheimer's disease. Although the pathogenesis of each disorder is multifactorial and the causal relation remains poorly understood, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced lipid and protein oxidation conceivably plays a common role. Lipid peroxidation product was recently reported to be a key factor also for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, because of inducing hepatocyte degeneration/death. Here, we focus o

An analysis of physicians' diagnostic reasoning regarding pediatric abusive head trauma.

BACKGROUND: Physician diagnoses of abusive head trauma (AHT) have been criticized for circular reasoning and over-reliance on a "triad" of findings. Absent a gold standard, analyses that apply restrictive reference standards for AHT and non-AHT could serve to confirm or refute these criticisms. OBJECTIVES: To compare clinical presentations and injuries in patients with witnessed/admitted AHT vs. witnessed non-AHT, and with witnessed/admitted AHT vs. physician diagnosed AHT not witnessed/admitted. To measure the triad's AHT test performance in patients with witnessed/admitted AHT vs. witnessed
