Distribution of antibiotics in water, sediments and biofilm in an urban river (Córdoba, Argentina, LA).

In this study, we evaluated the distribution of up to forty-three antibiotics and 4 metabolites residues in different environmental compartments of an urban river receiving both diffuse and point sources of pollution. This is the first study to assess the fate of different antibiotic families in water, biofilms and sediments simultaneously under a real urban river scenario. Solid phase extraction, bead-beating disruption and pressurized liquid extraction were applied for sample preparation of water, biofilm and sediment respectively, followed by the quantification of target antibiotics by UPLC

Patterns in forage fish mercury concentrations across Northeast US estuaries.

Biogeochemical conditions and landscape can have strong influences on mercury bioaccumulation in fish, but these effects across regional scales and between sites with and without point sources of contamination are not well understood. Normal means clustering, a type of unsupervised machine learning, was used to analyze relationships between forage fish (Fundulus heteroclitus and Menidia menidia) mercury (Hg) concentrations and sediment and water column Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations, ancillary variables, and land classifications within the sub-watershed. The analysis utilized data

Comparative Proteomic Analysis Reveals the Regulatory Effects of H2S on Salt Tolerance of Mangrove Plant Kandelia obovata.

As a dominant mangrove species, Kandelia obovata is distributed in an intertidal marsh with an active H2S release. Whether H2S participates in the salt tolerance of mangrove plants is still ambiguous, although increasing evidence has demonstrated that H2S functions in plant responses to multiple abiotic stresses. In this study, NaHS was used as an H2S donor to investigate the regulatory mechanism of H2S on the salt tolerance of K. obovata seedlings by using a combined physiological and proteomic analysis. The results showed that the reduction in photosynthesis (Pn) caused by 400 mM of NaCl was

Exogenous nitric oxide alleviates sulfur deficiency-induced oxidative damage in tomato seedlings.

Despite numerous reports on the role of nitric oxide (NO) in regulating plants growth and mitigating different environmental stresses, its participation in sulfur (S) -metabolism remains largely unknown. Therefore, we studied the role of NO in S acquisition and S-assimilation in tomato seedlings under low S-stress conditions by supplying NO to the leaves of S-sufficient and S-deficient seedlings. S-starved plants exhibited a substantial decreased in plant growth attributes, photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll (Chl) and other photosynthetic parameters, and activity of enzymes involved in Chl bio

PDGF BB induces VEGF secretion in ovarian cancer.

Sustainable agriculture is taking care of food and textile needs and protect the environment without involving harmful chemicals. Urea is a nitrogenous fertilizer available in the market with about 46% of nitrogen content. When applied in the field, urea faces several chemical transformations and lost its efficiency without special practices. On the other hand, nanoparticles possess remarkable properties that are different from their bulk counterparts. When the size is close to the atomic scale, the changes in properties emerge due to their high surface area to volume ratio. All the atoms come

Studies on the reconstitution of o(2)-evolution of chloroplasts.

Extraction of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts with cholate-asolectin in the absence of Mg(2+) results in the rapid and selective inactivation of O(2) evolution and a partial (30 to 40%) loss of photosystem II (PSII) donor activity without extraction of thylakoid bound Mn ( approximately 5 to 6 Mn per 400 Chlorophyll). Inclusion of ethylene glycol in the extractions inhibits loss of O(2) evolution and results in quantitative and qualitative differences in proteins solubilized but does not significantly inhibit the partial loss of PSII donor activity. Similarly, in two stage experime

Photodynamic ablation of floating lung cancer cells using PVA and TPGS emulsified PLGA nanoparticles loaded with pyropheophorbide-a.

Metastasis or the spread of cancer cells to other tissues is a hallmark that leads to the majority of cancer-related deaths worldwide. When metastasizing cancer cells invade into the bloodstream, they become floating cells, also known as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), which can lead to the development of metastasis-associated multidrug resistance in advanced cancer patients. Eradication of CTCs has received much attention as a strategy for preventing metastasis. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted growing interest as a minimally invasive approach for cancer treatment. Pyropheophorbide-a

Potato LAI estimation by enhancing spectral features of reflectance and fluorescence to improve application potential among different varieties.

Accurate leaf area index (LAI) estimation of potato crops is of great importance for precision management in potato cultivation. Vegetation indices (VIs) derived from spectral reflectance are widely used for LAI estimation but suffer from saturation under high LAI conditions, limiting accuracy and robustness across varieties. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence in the near-infrared region (SIFNIR), closely linked to canopy photosynthetic activity and light absorption, provides complementary information for LAI estimation. However, heterogeneous light radiation and structural differences amo

NO and melatonin interplay augment Cd-tolerance mechanism in eggplants: ROS detoxification and regulation of gene expression.

Global crop productivity is consistently threatened by cadmium (Cd) soil contamination. Crosstalk between nitric oxide (NO) and melatonin (MT) in enhancing crop resilience to heavy metal stress has gained significant attention. Here, we evaluated the joint effect of sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 200 μM as NO donor) and MT (100 μM) on Cd-stressed eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). Cd stress significantly reduced plant growth, biomass yield, leaf pigments, and biochemical properties. Conversely, SNP, MT, and particularly their combined (SNP + MT) application reduced Cd toxicity and enhanced growth an

Antibacterial efficacy of iron oxide and silver nanoparticles against bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum.

The security of vegetable plants worldwide is threatened by bacterial wilts, one of the most infectious soil-borne bacterial plant diseases. This is caused by R. Solanacearum. Overuse of bactericides and antibiotics to combat bacterial wilt results in pesticide resistance and toxicity to beneficial living organisms. Consequently, nanoparticles are more beneficial, safe for the environment, and have strong antibacterial properties than conventional pesticides. In the present work, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by simple chemical, eco-friendly pr

Mapping the serological prevalence rate of West Nile fever in equids, Tunisia.

West Nile fever (WNF) is a viral disease of wild birds transmitted by mosquitoes. Humans and equids can also be affected and suffer from meningoencephalitis. In Tunisia, two outbreaks of WNF occurred in humans in 1997 and 2003; sporadic cases were reported on several other years. Small-scale serological surveys revealed the presence of antibodies against WN virus (WNV) in equid sera. However, clinical cases were never reported in equids, although their population is abundant in Tunisia. This study was achieved to characterize the nationwide serological status of WNV in Tunisian equids. In tota

Carbon sequestration and stress resilience potential of select dominant tropical tree species of Indian subcontinent under combined elevated CO2, O3, and climate stress.

During the last two decades, a number of research outcomes have vetted possible plant responses to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and other climate stressors in temperate trees and agricultural crops. However, such climate change repercussions (elevated CO2, O3, temperature, and drought) on tropical trees, especially on dominant trees of the Indian subcontinent, remain largely unexplored. This study investigates the productivity of selected species (Pongamia pinnata, Ficus benghalensis, Azadirachta indica, and Syzygium cumini) under three experimental settings, 1) Combined Stress Condition (SC) - Carbon
