California encephalitis (CE) virus (snowshoe hare subtype) was isolated from 1 of 38 pools comprising 970 unengorged female Aedes canadensis mosquitoes and from 3 of 152 pools containing 5,676 A. communis mosquitoes which were collected in the Yukon Territory, Canada between latitudes 61 and 66 degrees N during June and July 1974. During four summers 1971 through 1974, this virus was recovered from 26 of 648 pools derived from 30,686 mosquitoes of 4 species. The results of different workgroups and those obtained in own investigations with Q fever vaccines for cattle and sheep are reviewed and discussed. In field trials Coxiella (C.) burnetii vaccines of inactivated whole cells (WC) in phase (ph) I as well as WC ph II vaccines prevented infections of cows exposed to naturally infected environments, provided they were vaccinated as noninfected calves. Glanders, caused by the Gram-negative, nonmotile bacterium Burkholderia mallei, is a contagious and highly fatal disease of equines. This study examined the occurrence of Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), the infectious agent of Q-fever, in sheep and sheep-ticks in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, as a possible source of infection in Q-fever outbreaks. Using PCR, we examined a total of 1066 Dermacentor ticks from 23 herds and 49 samples of tick excrement from 18 herds for C. burnetii. An antibody-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with coxsackievirus B1 as the antigen was evaluated for detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, and IgA antibodies and showed broad specificity for enteroviruses. A case of acute hemorrhagic cystitis caused by adenovirus type 11, which occurred in an allograft recipient 6 months after a living-related renal transplantation, is described. The patient lacked a neutralizing antibody to adenovirus type 11 before transplantation. Adenovirus type 11 was isolated from his urine and he developed a neutralizing and complement-fixing antibody to this virus. A 41 year old man developed a myolysis with myoglobinuria during a period of high fever. The clinical signs were severe myalgia with general muscular weakness without manifest localized paresis. Electromyographically a diffuse generalized floride myopathy was found. Besides the extreme increase of CPK, a myoglobinuria was already macroscopically visible, which caused an acute renal failure.
