State-of-the-art imaging of the central airways.

Recent technological advances in CT imaging have revolutionized non-invasive imaging of the central airways. It is now possible to image the entire central airways in a few seconds and to create elegant three-dimensional reconstructions of the airways in a few minutes. The fast speed of CT scanning now allows for a dynamic assessment of the central airways, expanding the ability to non-invasively detect functional abnormalities such as tracheobronchomalacia. The purpose of this article is to familiarize clinicians with recent advances in airway imaging. A special emphasis is placed upon advanc

Combining decision support and image processing: a PROforma model.

This paper addresses two important problems in medical image interpretation:(1) integration of numeric and symbolic information, (2) access to external sources of medical knowledge. We have developed a prototype in which image processing algorithms are combined with symbolic representations for reasoning, decision making and task management in an integrated, platform-independent system for the differential diagnosis of abnormalities in mammograms. The prototype is based on PROforma, a generic technology for building decision support systems based on clinical guidelines. The PROforma language d

A reliable quantum-chemical protocol for the characterization of organic mixed-valence compounds.

Structures, dipole moments, electron-transfer barriers, and spin density distributions of a series of mixed-valent bistriarylamin radical cations have been studied systematically by hybrid density functional methods with variable exact-exchange admixture combined with a continuum solvent model. The chosen systems differ in their bridging units and are all relatively close, from both sides, to the class II/III borderline of the Robin-Day classification of mixed-valence systems. Solvent effects are found to have a dramatic influence on the localized vs delocalized character of these cations. Whi

VAMPP: a veterinary automated management and production control programme for dairy farms (the application of MUMPS for data processing).

The application of MUMPS in a computerised recording system for herd health and production control on dairy farms is reviewed. MUMPS is an interactive multi-user database management system, which is both an operating system and a high level computer language. In this system, coding of veterinary and management events prior to data entry is not needed. Programmes and data structure can easily be adapted and extended due to the features of MUMPS. The system for dairy farms allows epidemiological analyses, due to the flexibility of the programme. The programme is used by farmers and veterinary su

An explainable artificial intelligence system for diagnosing Helicobacter Pylori infection under endoscopy: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Changes in gastric mucosa caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection affect the observation of early gastric cancer under endoscopy. Although previous researches reported that computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have great potential in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection, their explainability remains a challenge. OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop an explainable artificial intelligence system for diagnosing H. pylori infection (EADHI) and giving diagnostic basis under endoscopy. DESIGN: A case-control study. METHODS: We retrospectively obtained 47,239 images from 1826 pat

Development of computerized Kana Pick-out Test for the neuropsychological examination.

The Kana Pick-out Test, which was developed in Japan and done with paper and pencil, is said to be suitable for inspecting higher-order brain function and to be a good method for screening persons with mild or slight dementia. We have developed a computerized version of the Kana Pick-out Test, which runs on a stand-alone computer, intended to be utilized for mass screening and self-administration. The program was developed with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and runs under the Windows operating system on any IBM PC compatible computer. In this study, all subjects could use the system by interactin

[Percutaneous puncture with a robot].

The great advances of microelectronics and mechatoronics are gradually being applied into medicine. In percutaneous nephrostomy, it is possible to calculate the depth and direction of the needle by using a computer if one point on the surface of the skin and another point in the dilated renal pelvis are determined. When a robot is moved according to the computed results, a percutaneous operation is performed fast and exactly. We established a system through which a percutaneous operation is automatically performed. The following technical difficulties of this system were overcome. The coordina

Analysis of distributed-collaborative activity during augmented reality exposure therapy for cockroach phobia.

Recent research presents Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy (ARET) for treatment of phobia of cockroaches as a potentially effective technique. However, to the authors' knowledge no studies have been published concerning the Human-Computer-Interaction issues of such a system. The aim of this paper is to report some preliminary data on how patients, therapists and an Augmented Reality system collaborate and interact during the therapeutic process. The results show that the therapeutic process is distributed between individuals (patient and therapist) and artifacts (e.g. AR cockroaches, a comput

Hand motion assessment and rehabilitation system.

Along with the rapid development of information technology, computers play an increasingly prominent and important role. One current trend is to use computers as instruments for physical rehabilitation. In this study, we introduce a new hand motion assessment and rehabilitation system. This system assesses a user's grip strength and records the sudden changes in air pressure through a circuit and A/D adapter. A PC interface transforms and saves the data in a data record file. The data is then compiled and combined with a patient's case history and keyed into a database as reference for clinica

[Neurologic complications in Wegener's granulomatosis].

Nervous system involvement is relatively frequent in Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). It may be difficult to differentiate between the primary central nervous system involvement and complications secondary to concomitant arterial hypertension, renal insufficiency and iatrogenic effects of immunosuppressive therapy. The crucial role in the assessment of intracranial pathology may be ascribed to the diagnostic imaging techniques: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and cerebral blood flow imaging utilising the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). SPECT may pro

ROSE: decision trees, automatic learning and their applications in cardiac medicine.

Computerized information systems, especially decision support systems, have acquired an increasingly important role in medical applications, particularly in those where important decisions must be made effectively and reliably. But the possibility of using computers in medical decision making is limited by many difficulties, including the complexity of conventional computer languages, methodologies, and tools. Thus a conceptual simple decision making model with the possibility of automating learning should be used. In this paper, we introduce a cardiological knowledge-based system based on the

Speed-Adaptive In-Sensor Reservoir Computing via Gate-Tunable MoS2-x/MoTe2 Heterojunction Dynamics.

Compact, low-power optoelectronic devices that integrate sensing, memory, and computing have shown substantial potential for realizing software-hardware co-design in artificial intelligence systems. However, existing optoelectronic devices integrating multiple functions typically suffer from fixed carrier dynamics that cannot be reconfigured after fabrication, which imposes a significant challenge on machine vision. Here, we overcome this challenge with a single MoS2-x/MoTe2 van der Waals heterojunction that delivers both self-powered broadband photodetection with superb performance and gate-t

Twenty-four-hour monitoring of esophagopharyngeal pH in outpatients. Use of four-channel pH probe and computerized system.

A 24 hour computerized four-channel esophagopharyngeal pH system is described. Using a 1.5 mm diameter esophageal probe containing four separate antimony-tipped electrodes and a small patient-worn digital recording computer, inpatient and outpatient studies are performed in the physiologic environment of the patient's workplace or home. Stored pH data in the computer are teletransmitted from satellite esophageal pH laboratories to a central esophageal pH laboratory for analysis, scoring, printout, and storage. Satellite laboratories located in hospitals, clinics, and physicians' offices use a

Van der Waals Ferroelectric CuInP2S6-based Multi-slope In-memory Probabilistic Computing.

Probabilistic bit (p-bit) is the fundamental building block and core element of probabilistic computing (p-computing). However, physical separation of bit generation and memory storage creates a memory bottleneck in conventional p-computing architectures. We report on experimentally integrating voltage-tunable stochastic bit generation and non-volatile memory functionalities within a single in-memory device to realize a p-bit with van der Waals ferroelectric CuInP2S6 (CIPS). Leveraging the stochastic displacement of Cu+ ions and the material's remanent polarization under an external electric f
