Cellular localization of ROS and NO in olive reproductive tissues during flower development.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) are involved in the signalling processes taking place during the interactions pollen-pistil in several plants. The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is an important crop in Mediterranean countries. It is a dicotyledonous species, with a certain level of self-incompatibility, fertilisation preferentially allogamous, and with an incompatibility system of the gametophytic type not well determined yet. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether relevant ROS and NO are present in the stigmatic

Antifungal and other bioactive properties of the volatilome of Streptomyces scabiei.

UNLABELLED: Volatile compounds (VCs) produced by most host-associated bacteria remain largely unexplored despite their potential roles in suppressing microbial competitors and facilitating host colonization. This study investigated the volatilome of Streptomyces scabiei 87-22, the model species for causative agents of common scab in root and tuber crops, under culture conditions that completely inhibited fungal growth, including the phytopathogens Alternaria solani and Gibberella zeae. Bicameral assays confirmed that these effects were partially due to VCs. Using gas chromatography coupled wit

Doctoral training to support sustainable soil geochemistry research in Africa.

Africa's potential for scientific research is not yet being realized, for various reasons including a lack of researchers in many fields and insufficient funding. Strengthened research capacity through doctoral training programmes in higher education institutes (HEIs) in Africa, to include collaboration with national, regional and international research institutions, can facilitate self-reliant and sustainable research to support socio-economic development. In 2012, the Royal Society and the UK's Department for International Development (now the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) la

Insights into the Biocontrol Function of a Burkholderia gladioli Strain against Botrytis cinerea.

Pathogenic fungi are the main cause of yield loss and postharvest loss of crops. In recent years, some antifungal microorganisms have been exploited and applied to prevent and control pathogenic fungi. In this study, an antagonistic bacteria KRS027 isolated from the soil rhizosphere of a healthy cotton plant from an infected field was identified as Burkholderia gladioli by morphological identification, multilocus sequence analysis, and typing (MLSA-MLST) and physiobiochemical examinations. KRS027 showed broad spectrum antifungal activity against various phytopathogenic fungi by secreting solub

Appropriate flame-spraying treatment exacerbates thermal oxidative degradation of residual polyethylene films.

In dryland farming, plastic film mulching can significantly increase crop yields, but the resulting residues impair soil health. Heretofore, only few studies had examined how heat treatment facilitates the rapid degradation of polyethylene (PE) residual films. Herein, we characterized the variations in micro-morphology, functional groups, and crystallinity of PE residual films after moderate heat exposure using a self-made flame-spraying equipment. The results revealed that solid residues (SR) obtained from flame-spraying showed a gravimetric weight loss of 9.39 %-15.35 % compared with untreat

Individual or successiveseed priming with nitric oxide and calcium toward enhancing salt tolerance of wheat crop through early ROS detoxification and activation of antioxidant defense.

Despite the considerable efforts reported so far to enhance seed priming, novel ideas are still needed to be suggested to this sustainable sector of agri-seed industry. This could be the first study addressing the effect of nitric oxide (NO) under open field conditions. The impacts of seed redox-priming using sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and osmo-priming with calcium chloride (CaCl2), both applied individually or successively, were investigated under salinity stress conditions on wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.). Various parameters, including water relations, growth, yield, photosynthetic pig

Mercury cycling in agricultural and managed wetlands of California, USA: experimental evidence of vegetation-driven changes in sediment biogeochemistry and methylmercury production.

The role of live vegetation in sediment methylmercury (MeHg) production and associated biogeochemistry was examined in three types of agricultural wetlands (domesticated or white rice, wild rice, and fallow fields) and adjacent managed natural wetlands (cattail- and bulrush or tule-dominated) in the Yolo Bypass region of California's Central Valley, USA. During the active growing season for each wetland, a vegetated:de-vegetated paired plot experiment demonstrated that the presence of live plants enhanced microbial rates of mercury methylation by 20 to 669% (median=280%) compared to de-vegetat

Metabolic nontarget-site mechanism confers dual resistance to cyhalofop-butyl and imazamox in Leptochloa chinensis from China.

Chinese sprangletop (Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees) has emerged as a dominant grass weed in rice fields, representing a serious risk to crop productivity because of its rapidly increasing resistance to herbicides. A putative resistant population, MASHS7 (R), was collected from an imidazolinone-tolerant rice field, where it had survived applications of cyhalofop-butyl (CYB) and imazamox (IMA) at the field-recommended rates. Dose-response assays indicated that compared with the susceptible (S) population, the R population developed resistance to CYB (26.29-fold) and IMA (5.50-fold). Additionall

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community abundance, functions, and symbiotic interactions revealed by root metatranscriptomes.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities are often profiled by metabarcoding, but this approach can bias abundance estimates and provide limited insight into community function and interactions with the host. Here, using weekly, field-based multi-omics, we find metatranscriptomes and metagenomes increase estimates of AM fungal relative abundance 6-15-fold over rDNA metabarcoding and that root AM fungal relative abundance correlates strongly with sorghum forage yield (R > 0.9) and moderately with grain yield/quality. AM fungal relative abundance is impacted directly by sorghum development

Multi-scale lodging in rice and wheat: bridging biomechanical traits, phenotypic detection, and intelligent harvesting systems.

Lodging severely compromises the productivity and harvestability of rice and wheat, yet the mechanistic links among molecular regulation, tissue structure, whole-plant mechanical failure, field phenotypes, and harvesting responses remain insufficiently integrated. This review establishes a mechanically consistent, plant-centered, cross-scale framework that connects genetic and biochemical regulation to quantifiable engineering parameters, including bending moment, section modulus, flexural rigidity, and resisting moment, and links these parameters to canopy-scale structural and optical phenoty

Species-specific effects of post-wheat green manure incorporation on spring wheat yield and soil greenhouse gas emissions in an arid irrigated system.

Post-wheat green manure incorporation can improve fallow-season resource use and crop productivity, but species-specific effects on soil greenhouse gas emissions and subsequent wheat yield remain unclear in spring wheat systems. A field experiment was conducted from 2022 to 2023 in the Yellow River Basin of Inner Mongolia, China, with five green manure species, namely common vetch, hairy vetch, sesbania, forage rapeseed, and forage oat, and a fallow control. Soil CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, global warming potential (GWP), greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), wheat growth, and grain yield were eva

From metabolomes to phenotypes: predictive metabolomics across scales.

Metabolomics has transformed plant biology by delivering high-resolution insights into the biochemical networks that govern growth, adaptation, and environmental responsiveness. The plant metabolome, encompassing both primary and specialised metabolites, acts as a dynamic interface between genotype and phenotype, capturing the interplay of intrinsic genetic regulation with extrinsic environmental cues. Significant technological progress has enabled increasingly comprehensive metabolic profiling, accelerating the discovery of novel natural products, the mapping of metabolic pathways, and the me

A Holistic Approach to Potato Suberin Analysis: A Time Travel from Breakdown Products to Suberin Deposition to Metabolite Profiling of Wound Periderm.

The outer skins of potato tubers undergo healing after the wounding that occurs during cultivation and processing of this major food crop, but the macromolecular structure of the suberized cell wall barriers that mitigate drought and infection has remained elusive. Because many prior models have drawn upon top-down analyses of depolymerization treatments that are known to be incomplete, we devised a comprehensive strategy of bottom-up monitoring of wound-healing metabolites at several time points, solid-state NMR (ssNMR) compositional analysis of the suberized cell wall, and top-down chemical

Chemical and morphological diversity of foliar epicuticular waxes in economically important grain crops.

Global food systems are under pressure to remain stable amidst increasing uncertainty. Plant epicuticular waxes play vital roles in mitigating a range of environmental stressors, hence understanding their diversity can inform practices that sustain the large-scale production of grain crops that underpin human nutrition. This study employs a combination of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy to chemically and morphologically characterise the foliar epicuticular waxes from economically important monocot and dicot species. Principal component analyses are also pe

The potential global distribution of Drosophila suzukii, including consideration of irrigation and Australian host cropping areas.

BACKGROUND: Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), is a major fruit fly pest of cherries and berries across Eurasia and North America, with a restricted distribution in the southern hemisphere. It is currently ranked the third greatest threat to Australia on the National Priority Plant Pest (NPPP) list (2024). Various CLIMEX, MaxEnt and mechanistic models of the potential global distribution of D. suzukii have not included irrigation effects. Here, we model the potential global distribution of D. suzukii using CLIMEX, mapped as a composite of natural rainfall and irrigation.

Phytotelm and anthropogenic mosquitoes: community structure in natural and artificial habitats in an Atlantic Forest agroforestry system, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Agroforestry systems (AFSs) combine agricultural crops with native or exotic trees to promote sustainable production while creating heterogeneous landscapes with diverse fauna microhabitats. In the Atlantic Forest biome, how these systems shape immature mosquito (Culicidae) communities and vector dynamics remains poorly understood. We characterized the immature mosquito community (larvae and pupae) across five larval habitat types, three natural (bromeliads, bamboo internodes, and peach palm leaf bracts) and two artificial (a plastic tarp and a water barrel), in an AFS in the state of Rio de J
