Clinical assessment of impulsiveness and defence mechanisms in young patients with mood disorders in a two-year prospective study.

AIM: There have been limited prospective investigations of early clinical markers involved in mood regulation and diagnosis change in young patients. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in impulsivity and defence mechanisms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) with acute symptoms and remission compared to healthy controls (HC), and possible psychological predictors of diagnosis conversion. METHODS: Seventy-nine young MDD or BD patients and 40 HC were enrolled in a two-year prospective study. A comprehensive clinical interview focused on clinical and

Quality of life of maxillectomy patients using an obturator prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: The psychosocial adaptation of patients who had undergone a resection of the maxilla for cancer of the maxillary antrum and/or hard palate with the placement of an obturator prosthesis to restore speech and eating function was studied. METHODS: Forty-seven patients were interviewed who had a maxillectomy with an obturator prosthesis at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, an average of 5.2 years (SD = 2.4 years) ago, 94% of whom had some of their soft palate resected. Interviews were conducted by telephone by a trained research interviewer, using a series of questionnaires to a

Association between organ dysfunction during ICU stay and post-intensive care syndrome at 1 year after ICU discharge: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) affects a substantial proportion of intensive care unit (ICU) survivors. This study investigates whether granular features of the ICU course including organ dysfunction are associated with the prevalence of PICS one year after ICU discharge. METHODS: This was a prospective single-center cohort study of 159 adult surgical ICU survivors enrolled between September 2023 and August 2024. Standardized assessments for PICS domains were performed at 3 and 12 months; PICS was defined a priori as impairment in ≥ 2 of 3 domains (physical, cognitive, psycho

HRQL and severity of brain ultrasound findings in a cohort of adolescents who were born preterm.

PURPOSE: To determine whether health-related quality of life (HRQL) in a cohort of adolescents who were born prematurely is related to the severity of brain ultrasound examination findings during the newborn period. METHODS: This study uses a historical, prospective methodology to investigate the 84 members of a cohort of infants born prematurely (<33 weeks gestation) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital during a 25-month period, from 1979 to 1981. We extracted the following information from their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) records: ultrasound examination findings (graded for intr

Development and psychometric validation of a multidimensional measure of embodied cognition in dance training.

BACKGROUND: Embodied cognition has been increasingly recognized as an important mechanism linking bodily experience and psychological adaptation, yet few instruments capture its multidimensional characteristics in dance training contexts. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to develop and validate a measure of embodied cognition for dance training. METHODS: A total of 439 undergraduate dance students participated in a two-stage cross-validation design. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted in a pilot sample (n = 136) to identify the underlying factor structure, and confirmatory factor ana

Assessing Reinvestment Tendencies in Athletes: Psychometric Validation of Decision- and Movement-Specific Reinvestment Scales.

Reinvestment Theory proposes that excessive conscious control over movement execution or decision making can disrupt automaticity and contribute to performance breakdown under pressure. Despite its clinical relevance in sport psychology, culturally validated measures of reinvestment remain limited. This study examined the psychometric properties of adapted versions of the Decision-Specific Reinvestment Scale (DSRS) and Movement-Specific Reinvestment Scale (MSRS) in a sample of athletes and physically active individuals. Participants were 259 undergraduate sport science students (Mage = 20.34 y

Validation of the Turkish Fear of War Scale (FOWARS): Psychometric Evidence and Associations with Tolerance of Uncontrollability, Psychological Symptoms, and Personality Traits.

Growing geopolitical instability has led to increasing concerns about the psychological impact of war beyond directly affected populations, highlighting the need for culturally appropriate instruments to assess fear of war. In this study, we evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Fear of War Scale (FOWARS) and examine its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and personality traits. A total of 643 adults across two independent samples (sample 1 = 360; sample 2 = 283) completed the FOWARS, the Tolerance of Uncontrollability Questionnaire, the Next Big Fi

Fear of Sleep in Undergraduates with a History of Sexual Trauma.

Fear of sleep may drive the development of trauma-related sleep disturbances but may differ across potentially traumatic events (PTEs). This study tested whether the factor structure of the Fear of Sleep Inventory-Short Form (FOSI-SF) differed between women with a history of sexual traumas (ST: including sexual assault and other sexual traumas) and women reporting other Non-ST PTEs. Two samples of undergraduate women who endorsed a history of PTEs (n = 339 and n = 318) completed a battery of questionnaires including the FOSI-SF, as well as other psychological and sleep screening measures. We c

Psychometric Properties of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale (PTSS) among Portuguese Adults.

BACKGROUND: Positive thinking is a cognitive attitude that focuses on optimism and aims for positive results. Positive thinking leads to positive emotions, more adaptive behaviors, and better problem solving. Positive thoughts can inspire individuals and have been linked to increased psychological health. On the other hand, negative thoughts are related to unsatisfactory mental health. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale (PTSS) and to verify the correlations between positive th

Further validation of the Perceptions of Uncertainties in Genome Sequencing scale among patients with cancer undergoing tumor sequencing.

It is important to understand how individuals perceive uncertainties and the consequent impact on their psychological well-being and health behavior. The Perceptions of Uncertainties in Genome Sequencing (PUGS) scale measures clinical, affective, and evaluative uncertainties about information from sequencing. The PUGS scale has been shown to be valid and reliable among individuals receiving results about their genomes. This study assessed whether its validity generalized to patients with cancer undergoing tumor sequencing. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted on data from the Molecu

Hostile-helpless states of mind: A scoping review of risk factors, correlates, and consequences.

Chronic relational trauma can lead to the formation of pervasively unintegrated attachment representations in adulthood, referred to as Hostile-Helpless (HH) states of mind. Individuals with this type of attachment disorganization evidence conflicting evaluations of caregivers and have difficulty reflecting on their traumatic childhood experiences. This scoping review is the first to systematically integrate the results of all empirical studies on HH states of mind in an effort to highlight the scientific and clinical contributions of the concept and guide future research. Psychometric Properties of the Italian Mentalization Questionnaire: Assessing Structural Invariance and Construct Validity.

Mentalization is an important interpersonal ability, necessary for adaptive interpersonal relationships and emotion regulation. Deficits in mentalization have been associated with poor psychological outcomes and have been observed in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder. The Mentalization Questionnaire (MZQ) has been developed as self-report measure of mentalization deficit. The aim of the study was to investigate the dimensionality of the MZQ in a nonclinical sample composed of Italian adults from the general population and to analyze its performance in categorizing individuals with

Dimensionality, Reliability, Invariance, and Validity of the Multidimensional Social Anxiety Response Inventory-21 (MSARI-21).

Research shows that social anxiety disorder (SAD) is prevalent in the United States, and could interfere with many aspects of a person's life. Although numerous psychological instruments have been developed to measure presence and intensity levels of social anxiety, these instruments fail to capture the range of responses individuals use to mitigate the negative affect associated with the anxiety, namely alcohol use and anger distress. Recently, the Multidimensional Social Anxiety Response Inventory-21 (MSARI-21) was developed to address this limitation and increase our understanding of the co

Who Improved in a Trauma Intervention for HIV-Positive Women with Child Sexual Abuse Histories?

The Healing Our Women Program, an 11-week integrated trauma/HIV intervention designed for HIV-positive women with child sexual abuse histories, has been found to reduce psychological distress in treatment groups compared to wait-list controls (Chin et al., 2004; Wyatt et al., 2011). This study examines the characteristics of participants who improved vs. those who did not improve among participants who received the active intervention (N=78) at post, three-, and six-month follow-up. Logistic regression analyses conducted post-intervention and at three- and six-month followups examined demograp

'Residence is not home' is a particular type of delusion associated with cognitive decline of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Although delusion is one of the common symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the association between cognitive deficits and delusions remains unclear. Considering the heterogeneity of delusion, the correlation may depend upon the type of the delusion. METHODS: 142 consecutive first-visit AD outpatients of the Tajiri Clinic (Osaki, Miyagi, Japan) were enrolled in the study. Psychological data included the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument (CASI) and the Frequency-Weighted Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale (BEHA

The psychological profiles of internet, contact, and mixed internet/contact sex offenders.

A sample of 526 contact offenders, 459 internet offenders, and 143 mixed contact/internet offenders was compared on a range of self-report psychological measures assessing offense-supportive beliefs, socioaffective functioning, emotional management, and socially desirable responding. A multivariate general linear model found a mixed offender profile that was similar to internet offenders rather than contact offenders. The contact group demonstrated lower victim empathy, a greater level of pro-offending attitudes, an externalized locus of control, more assertiveness, a diminished ability to rel

Developing a screening instrument and at-risk profile for nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior in college women and men.

Archival data (N = 1,048 women, 1,136 men) from a mental health survey of college students were used to investigate incidence of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), including cutting. Significant levels (defined as 4-5 lifetime incidents) were found in 9.3% of women and 5.3% of men. The Counseling Center Assessment for Psychological Symptoms (a global symptom inventory) and an assessment of trauma had been field tested with this sample. We randomly partitioned half of these data into a holdout sample and used the remainder to develop an NSSI screening inventory that included (a) 5 women's screenin

Mental distress in patients with functional or organic dyspepsia: a comparative study with a sample of the general population.

BACKGROUND: It has been argued that patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders have mental disorders more often than healthy controls and patients with organic disease. Most studies surveying psychological factors at the population level have relied on symptom questionnaires to diagnose functional dyspepsia. However, the symptom patterns alone are unable to adequately discriminate organic from functional dyspepsia. AIM: To evaluate the frequency of mental distress in primary care patients with organic or functional dyspepsia and compare the findings with a sample of the Finnish gener

[Vocal cord dysfunction in children and adolescents].

More attention has been given to vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) in the past years. Even though the disease is known since 1983 and was brought to mind at least casuistically through the years, often VCD was not diagnosed as such, being mistaken for bronchial asthma - at times with grave consequences for the patient. VCD causes the acute onset of stridulous respiration with acute dyspnea making the differential diagnosis of asthma quite suggestive. The inspirational stridor and a peracute progression of the disease should cause doubts as to the diagnosis of asthma. We collected case reports and d
