"We sometimes stress our own wives": perspectives on maternal mental health and emotional support among mothers, fathers, nurses, and community health workers in Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), maternal mental health (MMH) during and after pregnancy is often neglected despite ongoing global efforts to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. The complex nature of MMH problems and the stigma surrounding them require a thorough understanding of the perspectives of the different parties involved. Hence, we assessed the drivers of MMH problems, challenges in seeking help, and perceptions towards emotional and psychological support for pregnant women among four stakeholder groups in Western Kenya. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative approac

An externally validated machine learning algorithm for predicting mental and physical health outcomes three months post-hospitalization for severe viral infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Many individuals hospitalized due to severe viral infections develop mental and physical sequelae, which could potentially be prevented by targeted interventions for those at risk. Our goal was to develop and externally validate an algorithm for predicting mental and physical symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization utilizing routinely collected clinical data. Participants were included from two independent samples of the German National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON): a model development sample (SUEP; N = 451; mean age: 55.6 ± 15.3; 36.2% female) and an external validation sample (HAP: N =

Knowledge, acceptance, and willingness to pay for expanded carrier screening among obstetric patients in China: Implications for genetic counseling practice.

Expanded carrier screening (ECS) enables the identification of couples at increased risk of having offspring affected by serious inherited disorders; however, its effective implementation depends on individuals' understanding, acceptance, and access. This study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, acceptance, and willingness to pay (WTP) for ECS among individuals receiving obstetric care, and to examine the implications for genetic counseling practice. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 2964 reproductive-age individuals attending preconception counseling and antenatal care clinics. T

Impact of structured feedback sessions on work-related stress among nurses in inpatient acute care settings: a randomised controlled exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in acute care settings are frequently exposed to high psychological and organisational demands, which can lead to increased levels of work-related stress, negatively affecting professional well-being and patient outcomes. Structured feedback sessions have been proposed as a supportive leadership intervention to enhance communication, reduce work-related stress and strengthen managerial support within clinical teams. AIM: To examine the impact of structured feedback sessions, conducted at 3-week intervals, on work-related stress among nurses working in inpatient acute care s

Health service access and delivery for people living with rare disorders: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Rare disorders contribute significant collective health system costs; individuals living with rare disorders frequently encounter diagnostic, treatment, and management barriers. Despite international recognition of these challenges, there remains limited research addressing systemic health service delivery and access barriers for those with rare disorders, or identification of how such research informs policymaking. METHODS: Dimensions, PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, CINAHL, and Ovid platform databases were employed in a search of qualitative research documenting the health service exp

Relationship Between Sleep Disturbances and Non-Odontogenic Orofacial Pain and Its Impact on Quality of Life: A Systematic Review With Narrative Synthesis.

Non-odontogenic orofacial pain (OFP) is a common presentation in oral medicine and frequently co-occurs with sleep disturbances. Health-related and oral health-related quality of life (HRQoL/OHRQoL) are clinically meaningful outcomes; however, the relationship between sleep disturbances and quality of life (QoL) across non-odontogenic OFP conditions has not been comprehensively synthesised. This systematic review investigated the relationship between sleep disturbances and non-odontogenic OFP in adults and assessed their impact on HRQoL and OHRQoL. The review was conducted in accordance with P

Endometriosis: From Genes to Global Burden.

Endometriosis has a significant impact on the social, psychological, psychosomatic, and physical aspects of women's lives. There is increasing evidence that endometriosis has to be seen as a systemic and complex disorder with a multifactorial etiology, accompanied by numerous other pathologies, such as mental disorders and even cancer. Herein, we analyzed Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) generated from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD 2021), which are key metrics used to measure the worldwide impact of diseases. Besides, differential gene exp

Fast diagnosis and successful management of stress-induced ulcer with hemorrhagic shock following staging surgery for ovarian cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer (OC) is a common gynecologic malignancy, and postoperative management is crucial. Stress ulcers (SU), also known as stress-related mucosal disease, are a manifestation of gastrointestinal dysfunction in the body under severe trauma, critical illness, or significant psychological distress. The occurrence of SU after surgery is rare. Here we report a case of a 56-year-old female patient who developed a SU complicated by hemorrhagic shock after undergoing OC staging surgery. We quickly recognized the patient's condition and provided timely, standardized treatment, ultim

Unraveling the interconnectedness of trauma-related common mental disorders in Somali refugees: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Refugee populations, particularly Somali refugees, face disproportionately high rates of trauma-related common mental disorders (CMDs) due to prolonged exposure to war, forced displacement, and post-migration adversities. Traditional diagnostic models often conceptualize CMDs, including posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, as distinct disorders, overlooking the symptom-level interconnections that sustain psychological distress. This study employs network analysis to examine the structure of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, identifying cen

Three distinct patterns of mental health response following accidents in mountain sports: a follow-up study of individuals treated at a tertiary trauma center.

The restorative effect of physical activity in alpine environments on mental and physical health is well recognized. However, a risk of accidents and post-accident mental health problems is inherent to every sport. We aimed to characterize mental health in individuals following mountain sport accidents requiring professional medical management. Adult victims of mountain sport accidents treated at the hospital of the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) between 2018 and 2020 completed a cross-sectional survey at least 6 months following the admission (median 44 months, n = 307).
