Nasal sinuses cholesteatoma: case series and review of the English literature.

BACKGROUND: Nasal sinus cholesteatomas are uncommon slow-growing lesions that are frequently misdiagnosed preoperatively. They can develop d … ed MRI are essential for proper diagnosis and to exclude other similar lesions, such as nasal sinus mucoceles, cholesterol granuloma, or neoplastic lesions. Wide complete surgical excision is necessary to avoid recurrence and facilitate postoperative follow-up. As with ear cholesteatoma, strict postoperative follow-up is required to detect recurrence or re …

Extension of Masses Involving the Lacrimal Sac to Above the Medial Canthal Tendon.

PURPOSE: Retention mucoceles of the lacrimal sac almost always expand below the medial canthal tendon (MCT), whereas the very much rarer malignancies involving the lacrimal sac may progress to form a mass above the tendon. In this study, the incidence of malignancy was determined for patients with a preoperative decision to undergo biopsy for a clinically suspect, hard lacrimal sac mass, together with the proportion having a tumor extending above the MCT. METHODS: Patients thought-on the basis of having a firm, immobile mass centered on the lacrimal sac fossa-to possibly have lacrimal sac mal…

Sphenoid sinus mucocoele presenting with isolated oculomotor nerve palsy.

We describe two cases of sphenoid sinus mucocoele. Both presented with isolated oculomotor nerve palsy. Mucocoeles involving only the sphenoid sinus are uncommon. They are probably under-diagnosed as they may be asymptomatic or cause non-specific symptoms. Nasal symptoms occur infrequently but the close relationship of the sphenoid sinus to the orbital apex means that ocular symptoms including cranial nerve palsies are a common presenting feature. Involvement of the third cranial nerve in isolation is rare but has important neurosurgical implications which must be excluded before this symptom

Simulated aggressive skull base erosion in response to benign sinonasal disease.

Benign sinonasal masses and slow-growing neoplasms tend to remodel the nasal vault and facial bones, and this is particularly true of nasal polyps and inverted papillomas. However, when such benign masses press against the floor of the anterior cranial fossa and the walls of the sphenoid sinuses, simulated aggressive bone destruction rather than bone remodeling usually occurs. This type of bone destruction implies to the radiologist that a carcinoma may also be present, and this information could dissuade a surgeon from operating with an attempt at cure. In fact, about 90% of the time with inv

[Computerized tomography imaging of laryngocele. Its importance in the differential diagnosis of tumors of the larynx and pharynx].

The laryngocele is a dilatation of the laryngeal ventricle and represents a rare condition. In most cases there is a typical history. Patients with an internal laryngocele usually complain of hoarseness, dyspnea and cough. Laryngoscopy shows a swelling of the false cord on one side. The external laryngocele presents as a swelling in the neck. In some cases the clinical presentation is not that typical, so that computed tomography (CT) can be a helpful, additional investigation. CT scans show either an air- or mucus-containing tumor at the level of the false cord. This internal laryngocele may

Complications of frontal defects. Immobilization of the eye.

A case where the severe course of an orbital phlegmon led to a functionally and cosmetically poor condition is presented. Thirty-five years later, it was possible to achieve a satisfactory result through several operations performed with interdisciplinary cooperation. The orbit and forehead were reconstructed with porous polyethylene, thus ensuring a cosmetically good result. In two operations, the left eye was freed from its upward fixation through cicatrectomy and mobilization of the mucles, so that the eyes were straight again in the primary position. There is a limited binocular visual fie

Evaluation of Anatomical Variations of the Maxillary Sinus in Patients With and Without Mucous Retention Cyst.

Objectives: Mucous retention cyst (MRC) is a benign and self-limited lesion that can be caused by many risk factors, including anatomical variations of the sinonasal region. This study aims to investigate the relationship between anatomical variations and the presence of MRC. Materials and Methods: In total, 2109 sinonasal cone beam computed tomography images were evaluated for the presence of MRC, and the sinonasal anatomical regions such as the osteomeatal complex (OMC), infundibulum length, ostium height, the diameter of the ostium, the presence of accessory ostium, concha bullosa, and muco

Pulmonary barotrauma: assessment and investigation in divers.

Decompression illness (DCI) is an uncommon problem but can be significant in terms of morbidity and, very rarely, mortality. The mechanisms of DCI are pulmonary barotrauma and decompression sickness due to inert gas supersaturation. After the initial management phase, identification of predisposing factors is important to help advise divers regarding future risk and avoidance. Here we present four cases of DCI where pulmonary barotrauma was the likely causative mechanism. We highlight the important features in assessment for pulmonary barotrauma and advising divers on the risk of a recurrence.

Surgical management of plunging ranulas: a 10-year case series in South East Queensland.

BACKGROUND: Plunging ranulas are rare mucous extravasation pseudocysts that arise in the floor of the mouth and pass into the submandibular space of the neck. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnosis, surgical management and outcomes of patients with a plunging ranula at our institution in South East Queensland over a 10-year period. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of adult patients diagnosed with and treated for plunging ranula between 2006 and 2016 at Logan Hospital was conducted. Patient demographics, preoperative investigations, surgical management and post-operative outco

Mucosal maxillary cysts: long-term subjective outcomes after surgical treatment.

Mucosal maxillary cysts (MMCs) are usually asymptomatic and are often diagnosed as an incidental finding. The aim of this study is to assess clinical significance of MMCs and the long-term effect of surgical treatment on the symptoms initially addressed to MMCs. The study included a retrospective analysis of 64 patients who had undergone surgery for MMC using a questionnaire focused mainly on the effect surgery had on symptoms. Mean time of follow-up was 79 months. Patients were also divided and compared according to the presence of rhinitic symptoms. Twenty-six patients (63.4%) reported compl
