Occurrence and overlapping of pharyngeal bot flies Pharyngomyia picta and Cephenemyia auribarbis (Oestridae) in red deer of southern Spain.

From 1985 to 1990, 372 red deer (Cervus elaphus) from southern Spain were examined for larvae of pharyngeal bot flies Pharyngomyia picta and Cephenemyia auribarbis. The infestation was related to age, sex and intensity of infection. Fawns and adult deer (more than 5 years old) had a significantly (P < 0.05) higher prevalence and intensity of infection than younger deer. Conversely, no significant difference has been noted between sexes. Ninety percent of deer were found to be infested. A simultaneous occurrence of both species was found in 23% of cases, with noticeable differences between prev

Acquired resistance of sheep to larvae of Lucilia cuprina, assessed in vivo and in vitro.

The effect on subsequent larval survival of infesting sheep repeatedly with larvae of Lucilia cuprina was assayed in vivo and in vitro. One in vivo assay technique, in which implanted larvae were grown to third instar, indicated a significant reduction in larval survival; another in vivo technique, in which larvae were allowed to develop to second instar in small aluminium rings attached to the sheep, indicated no reduction in larval growth or survival. Larvae of Lucilia cuprina grown in vitro on media containing sera from previously infested sheep were significantly retarded in growth after 2

Effects of bot fly (Cuterebra) parasitism on activity patterns of Peromyscus maniculatus in the laboratory.

Peromyscus maniculatus subjected to bot fly (Cuterebra) parasitism in the laboratory showed significant changes in amount and temporal distribution of several activity patterns. Strenuous activities, such as running in an exercise wheel or stereotypic somersaulting, declined while less strenuous activities associated with maintenance behaviors increased. Diurnal response to handling and disturbance declined significantly in infected mice. The temporal distribution of nocturnal activity was altered, and may affect vulnerability of infected mice to small predators. Most changes persisted for at

Vulnerability of bot fly (Cuterebra) infected Peromyscus maniculatus to shorttail weasel predation in the laboratory.

In the laboratory, Peromyscus bearing a single Cuterebra larva are no more vulnerable to weasel predation than are uninfected control mice, and may be taken less often under certain conditions. Mice bearing two or more larvae appear to be more vulnerable than either controls or singly infected mice. Their increased vulnerability probably results from their failure to use arboreal pathways. Decreased activity may be responsible for the relative advantage of singly infected mice. Previous reports of higher survivorship among mice with a single bot parasite than among uninfected mice, and of lowe

Laval implant sutdies with Lucilia cuprina.

Semi-field studies, using the larval implant technique, show that sheep may be protected against resistant larvae of Lucilia cuprina by thorough jetting with chlorfenvinphos, diazinon, dichlofenthion and fenthion ethyl, but not bromophos ethyl, for the normal duration of waves of bodystrike in New South Wales. The standard method of assessing implant data is to be preferred to analyses based on average protection due to the extra time required for the latter procedure.

The effect of anthelmintic treatment and other management factors on the incidence of breech strike in Merino sheep.

Repeated scouring and soiling of the breech region with faeces rendered mulesed, Merino sheep susceptible to breech strike. Anthelmintic treatment of ewes before and after lambing and of lambs 6 to 8 weeks old reduced intestinal trichostrongylosis, scouring and consequent breech strike. Wether lambs tended to be more susceptible than ewe lambs and sheep grazing long pastures were struck more frequently than those on short pastures.

Prevalence of cuterebrid parasitism among woodmice in Virginia.

Botfly infestation was analyzed in 1319 small mammals from varied habitats and elevations in upland Virginia, 1972-1974. Adult Cuterebra fontinella were reared from bots infesting the woodmouse (Peromyscus leucopus). Of 651 woodmice, 199 (30.6%) were infested at least once. The season of bot infestation extended from May through November of all years, with peak prevalence (mean 42.2%) in August. Infestation in woodmice was general over a 2000 km2 study area during peak months. Significantly greater prevalence (P less than 0.001) was seen in forested and brushy habitat (39.9%) compared with old

First Report of Ignatzschineria indica Infection in Greece and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Ignatzschineria species are rare emerging human pathogens that are typically associated with myiasis. METHODS: We report the first case of Ignatzschineria indica bacteraemia in Greece in a male patient presenting with maggot-infested wounds of the thorax, shoulders, and arms. The isolate was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed according to EUCAST guidance. A review of the published literature on I. indica bacteraemia was also conducted. RESULTS: The patien…

Intrapuparial development of Sarcophaga (Liopygia) ruficornis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), a species of medical-veterinary and forensic importance, under laboratory conditions.

Sarcophaga (=Parasarcophaga) (Liopygia) ruficornis (Fabricius, 1794) is a species of medical-veterinary and forensic importance, as its immatures cause myiasis in humans and animals and colonize carcasses and cadavers. Therefore, investigations into the biology and morphology of this species, with a particular focus on pupae that constitute ≥50% of the developmental period for the immatures, are pertinent. Although there are biological and morphological studies of pupae, the intrapuparial development at different temperatures has not yet been analysed. Therefore, the present study aimed to des…

Prevalence of mouthpart sensilla and protease producing symbiotic gut bacteria in the forensic fly Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794): Insight from foraging to digestion.

The blow fly, Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) is a globally prevalent forensically important species that helps to estimate accurate postmortem interval since the death. This fly occasionally causes cutaneous myiasis and transmits several pathogenic bacteria. To understand their ability of corpse detection and digestion of protein-rich meal, the present study describes the mouthpart sensilla and assessment of protease producing symbiotic gut bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the prevalence of trichoid sensilla (Tr), basiconic sensilla (Ba) and microtrichia (Mr) on lab…

First Study of Pharingomyia picta and Cephanemyia auribarbis in Wild Populations of Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) in Portugal.

Nasopharyngeal myiasis in red deer has never been studied in Portugal. For this reason, from December 2015 to February 2016 a study was derived on hunted red deer in Idanha-a-Nova county to evaluate the Diptera larvae presence. During the initial examination on the spot, the larvae was analysed at the nasopharynx. When present, larvae were collected for further species identification. The infestation prevalence was 50.6 ± 7.61% (CI 95%), and the mean parasitism intensity was 11.38 larvae per affected host. Two larvae species were found, Pharyngomyia picta and Cephenemyia auribarbis, both on si…

Modeling current and future global distribution of Chrysomya bezziana under changing climate.

In the last few years, significant changes in climate have had a disparate effect on biodiversity. The influences of these changes are random and unpredictable. The resurgence of insect pests, especially of medical and veterinary importance, often corresponds with climate changes. The Old World screwworm, Chrysomya bezziana, is one of the most important myiasis-causing flies that parasitize warm-blooded animals in the Eastern Hemisphere. We used a spatial distribution modeling approach to estimate the consequences of climatic changes on the potential geographic distribution of this insect thro…
