Research on automatic segmentation method of microseismic monitoring signal under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

To address the issues of reduced microseismic signal detection accuracy and difficulty in identifying event boundaries under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, we propose SEU-Net, an automatic microseismic signal segmentation model that integrates a Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanism. This model embeds an SE module within the U-Net encoder, which enhances feature responses related to microseismic event boundaries through adaptive re-scaling of channel features. Simultaneously, it employs a temporal signal dimension expansion method to convert one-dimensional waveforms into an i

Interpretable biophysical neural networks of transcriptional activation domains separate roles of protein abundance and coactivator binding.

Deep neural networks have improved many difficult prediction tasks in biology, but it remains challenging to interpret these networks and learn the molecular mechanisms. Here, we address interpretation challenges by building biophysical neural networks for predicting activation domains, the regions within transcription factors (TFs) that recruit coactivators to drive gene expression. Deep neural networks can now accurately predict acidic activation domains from protein sequences, but these predictors are difficult to interpret. We designed shallow neural networks that incorporated biophysical

TomoGraphView: 3D medical image classification with omnidirectional slice representations and graph neural networks.

The sharp rise in medical tomography examinations has created a demand for automated systems that can reliably extract informative features for downstream tasks such as tumor characterization. Although 3D volumes contain richer information than individual slices, effective 3D classification remains difficult: volumetric data encode complex spatial dependencies, and the scarcity of large-scale 3D datasets has constrained progress toward 3D foundation models. As a result, many recent approaches rely on 2D vision foundation models trained on natural images, repurposing them as feature extractors

Effects of Hot-Air Drying Temperature on Biochemical Quality, Drying Kinetics, and Predictive Modeling of Ziziphus jujuba Fruits.

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is an important functional fruit with high levels of bioactive compounds. However, its high moisture content limits its postharvest shelf life. The biochemical properties of jujube fruits influenced by hot-air drying at 50, 60, and 70 °C were studied and predictive models were evaluated to optimize drying. The drying kinetics were modeled using the six classical thin-layer models and artificial neural network (ANN) approach. The Midilli-Kucuk model was the best classical model, and the ANN model showed the best predictive performance, with the RMSE values improve

Bioinspired hybrid optimisation and deep belief neural networks for early chronic kidney disease detection: an explainable clinical AI framework.

The early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD) can lead to timely and appropriate clinical intervention. However, most CKD diagnostic systems rely on redundant features and provide unreliable results in small and unbalanced datasets. Therefore, it is challenging to apply them in clinical settings due to a lack of transparency, as well as the extensive amount of time and effort to fine-tune them using manual labor. This article outlines an algorithm to test CKD automatically with a hybrid spiral search strategy-based binary gravitational search algorithm (SSS-BGSA) with elephant herding op

A machine learning algorithm to explore the impact of agricultural land-use types on CO2 emissions in Vietnam in the period 1990-2019.

The paper deals with an application of machine learning algorithms to examine the impact of agricultural land-use types on CO₂ emissions in Vietnam during the period 1990-2019. A four-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was employed to analyze the relationship between 21 agricultural land-use types (LUTs) and CO₂ emissions. The selected LUTs cover major agricultural products, including crops, meat, and vegetables. The results indicate that most agricultural LUTs are positively associated with CO₂ emissions, including bananas, dry beans, cabbages, cashew nuts in shell, fresh cassava, ra

Variational mode decomposition based prediction model for cough sounds using Xception-GRU classifier.

Cough is a popular pre-screening tool for the most respiratory disease diagnoses. Discriminating the abnormal cough from normal one by human ear is however challenging as minute pathological changes in auditory pattern go unnoticed and computer assistance is sought for the diagnosis. This study aims at developing a prediction model by analyzing the different frequency components of the signal in multiple dimensions. As a first step, the cough sounds are decomposed using variational mode decomposition (VMD) for five intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) followed by visualizing every IMF in bark frequ

Modeling the hallucinatory effects of classical psychedelics in terms of replay-dependent plasticity mechanisms.

Classical psychedelics induce complex visual hallucinations in humans, generating percepts that are coherent at a low level, but which have surreal, dream-like qualities at a high level. While there are many hypotheses as to how classical psychedelics could induce these effects, there are no concrete mechanistic models that capture the variety of observed effects in humans, while remaining consistent with the known pharmacological effects of classical psychedelics on neural circuits. In this work, we propose the 'oneirogen hypothesis,' which posits that the perceptual effects of classical psyc

Telecommunication-inspired network models of healthy and diseased brains.

Recent advances in nanoelectronics have spurred increased interest in the human brain and its complex functions. Numerous studies have explored brain behavior in varying levels of detail, from individual neurons to entire lobes. Intricately structured, the brain is a complex organ susceptible to diseases that may disrupt the connectivity between its internal regions. Investigating this phenomenon, the present study applies a discrete finite-state model to map the behavior of neurons within a neuronal agglomerate and examine the effect of disease on these behaviors. Each agglomerate is then com

Neural network modeling of Lassa fever spread and disability effects.

Lassa fever is one of the viral hemorrhagic illnesses produced through the Lassa virus and may be transmitted to individuals via contact with diseased rodents or their feces and urine. The current study presents the solutions to the nonlinear zoonotic spread of Lassa virus fever leading to disabilities model by designing a supervised neural network. The model is divided into the human (susceptible, severely infected, mildly infected, and recovered) and rodent (susceptible, infected) populations. The dynamic structure of one class to the other performs the zoonotic spread of Lassa virus fever m

Graph Neural Networks for Cancer Driver Gene Prediction: From Fundamentals to Applications.

Identifying cancer driver genes (CDGs) remains a central challenge in cancer genomics and is fundamental to precision oncology. Unlike passenger mutations, CDGs play a causal role in tumor initiation and progression. In recent years, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have emerged as a powerful framework for this task, as they naturally integrate heterogeneous multi-omics data within the context of protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. This chapter provides a comprehensive technical protocol for predicting CDGs using a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). We describe a step-by-step pipeline enco

Task optimized vision transformer for diabetic retinopathy detection and classification in resource constrained early diagnosis settings.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a progressive complication of diabetes and a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. Early detection and accurate classification of DR severity are critical for timely intervention but remain challenging, particularly in resource-constrained settings. While conventional deep learning (DL) models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown promising results, they often struggle to capture long-range dependencies in retinal fundus images and typically require substantial computational resources, limiting their utility on low-cost hardware. To a

Estimation of compressive strength of ultra-high performance lightweight concrete (UHPLC) using neural network.

High strength and lightweight are key trends in concrete development. Achieving a balance between these properties to produce high structural efficiency (strength-to-weight ratio) concrete is challenging due to the complex relationship between compressive strength and material components. In this study, two artificial neural network (ANN) models-the BP and Elman networks were used to predict the compressive strength of ultra-high-performance lightweight concrete (UHPLC), based on a robust database of 115 test datasets from previous studies. The investigated parameters included the cement grade
