Comparative nutritional analysis of newly developed interspecific citrus hybrids: multivariate insights for crop improvement.

Enhancing the quality and nutrient composition of citrus fruits is essential for ensuring food and nutritional security. In the present study, twenty-four newly developed interspecific citrus scion hybrids (16 Orangelos and 8 Tangelos) from 'Pummelo' × 'Mosambi' sweet orange and 'Pummelo' × 'Dancy' tangerine crosses, along with their parental genotypes, were evaluated for fruit physico-chemical attributes, bioactive composition, and mineral nutrient profiles. Significant variation was observed due to heterozygosity-driven transgressive segregation in the interspecific hybrid progenies. Fruit p

Electro-Mechanical Uncoupling of KV7.1 Voltage Sensor and Pore by 1,4-Benzodiazepines Is Modulated by Decoration of Position 1.

The voltage-gated potassium channel KV7.1 (KCNQ1) is essential for cardiac repolarization. Loss-of-function mutations prolong the action potential and cause long QT syndrome 1, predisposing to malignant arrhythmias. Pharmacological activators of KV7.1 are therefore of therapeutic interest. Among them, the 1,4-benzodiazepine derivative (R)-L3 is a potent activator that not only increases current amplitude but also slows activation and deactivation kinetics and abolishes inactivation by uncoupling the voltage sensor from the pore. To explore the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of (R)-L3,

Chemically induced cardiotoxicity: Role of voltage dependent ion channels.

Chemicals pervade human environments, with> 350,000 synthetic compounds driving unintentional exposures and pollution-linked deaths exceeding those from infectious diseases or violence. This review discusses the mechanisms of chemically induced cardiotoxicity (including pesticides, pollutants, heavy metals, and chemotherapeutics), emphasizing modulation of voltage-gated ion channels in cardiomyocytes, which disrupts action potential (AP) dynamics, excitation-contraction coupling (ECC), and predisposes to arrhythmogenesis. Key currents, sodium (INa), calcium (ICaL, ICaT), and potassium (Ito, IK

Peripheral Nerve Injury and Denervation-Induced Sarcopenia with a Focus on Pharmacological Dual-Target Strategies.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) causes rapid disruption of neuromuscular connectivity, leading to sarcopenia characterized by muscle wasting, mitochondrial dysfunction, and metabolic imbalance. Although calcium dysregulation and aberrant AMPK/mTOR signaling are known contributors, the molecular cascade linking nerve injury to muscle degeneration remains incompletely understood. This review explores pharmacological and molecular strategies to restore neuromuscular integrity after PNI. We focus on agents such as 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), a potassium channel blocker that enhances nerve conduction, an

Sustainable Fortification of Corn Tortillas with Broccoli By-Products.

Fortification is the deliberate addition of essential micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, to enhance a food's nutritional profile and contribute to public health. A promising approach to fortification involves the use of plant by-products which are rich in bioactive compounds. This study evaluates the effects of incorporating broccoli by-product powder into corn-flour tortillas. Five formulations were developed: a control (100% corn flour) and variations replacing 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% of the corn flour with broccoli by-product powder. Adding broccoli powder resulted in darker tor

Targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome with natural products for ischemia-reperfusion injury across organs: mechanisms, structure-activity relationships, and delivery innovations.

The review provides a comprehensive study of the therapeutic potential of natural products targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome to mitigate ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury across multiple organs. Excessive activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome triggers inflammatory cascades, cytokine release, pyroptosis, and tissue damage that exacerbate I/R injury in conditions such as ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and organ transplantation. It emphasizes the central pathological role of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in I/R injury and the critical need for effective inhibitors. It systematically presen

Role of l -arginine/nitric oxide/cyclic GMP/K ATP channel signaling pathway and opioid receptors in the antinociceptive effect of rutin in mice.

The l -arginine ( l -Arg)/nitric oxide/cyclic GMP/potassium channel (K ATP ) pathway and opioid receptors are known to play critical roles in pain perception and the antinociceptive effects of various compounds. While there is evidence suggesting that the analgesic effects of rutin may involve nitric oxide modulation, the direct link between rutin and the l -Arg/nitric oxide/cyclic GMP/K ATP pathway in the context of pain modulation requires further investigation. The antinociceptive effect of rutin was studied in male NMRI mice using the formalin test. To investigate the role of the l -Arg/ni

The nitrogenase mechanism: new roles for the dangler?

Dangler sites protruding from a core metallocluster were introduced into the bioinorganic lexicon in 2000 by R.D. Britt and co-workers in an analysis of the tetramanganese oxygen-evolving cluster in photosystem II. In this perspective, we consider whether analogous dangler sites could participate in the mechanism of dinitrogen reduction by nitrogenase. Two possible roles for dynamic danglers in the active site FeMo cofactor are highlighted that might occur transiently during turnover. The first role for a dangler involves the S2B belt sulfur associated with displacement by carbon monoxide and

How does fertilizer management strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation change the phytochemical profile and phenoloxidases activity during fruit ripening?

BACKGROUND: Highbush blueberry fruits have attracted a lot of attention from consumers due to their exquisite taste and considerable quantities of bioactive compounds. This premium-class foodstuff also contains antioxidant enzymes (phenoloxidases) implicated in the degradation of polyphenols that lead to discoloration and loss of antioxidant activity during fruit ripening. Despite substantial progress in research focused on fruit quality, unanswered questions remain about the effect of fertilizer strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation on the phytochemical content and phenoloxidases activit

Enhanced cadmium removal by a magnetic potassium ferrocyanide framework: Performance and mechanism study.

Polluted environments often contain large amounts of toxic metals, such as cadmium, which pose a major threat to ecosystems and public health. Contamination by cadmium and its compounds is often observed in areas surrounding zinc mining sites and electroplating factories, and the control of cadmium pollution is essential for environmental safety and health. In this study, a highly efficient and straightforward separation strategy for K4Fe(CN)6@Fe3O4 nanocomposites is successfully developed to capture the Cd ions in the water environment. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that K4Fe(CN)6@Fe3

Profiling of hepatic transcriptomes reveals modulatory effects of parasitic infection on the metabolic response to dietary polyphenols in pigs.

Polyphenols are a class of bioactive plant compounds with health-promoting properties, however, the interactions between polyphenols and pathogen infection and their cumulative impact on inflammation and metabolic health are not well understood. Here, we investigated if a subclinical parasitic infection modulates the hepatic response to dietary polyphenol supplementation in a porcine model. Pigs were fed a diet with or without 1% grape proanthocyanidins (PAC) for 28 days. During the final 14 days of the experiment, half the pigs in each dietary group were inoculated with the parasitic nematode
