Fascial Disorders: Implications for Treatment.

In the past 15 years, multiple articles have appeared that target fascia as an important component of treatment in the field of physical med … unction involving superficial fascia. Dysfunction involving alterations in mechanical coordination, proprioception, balance, myofascial pain, and cramps are more related to deep fascia and the epimysium. Superficial fascia is obviously more superficial than the other types and contains more elastic tissue. Consequently, effective treatment can probably be achiev …

A home balance exercise program improves walking in people with cerebellar ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Physical therapy intervention is the primary treatment for gait ataxia and imbalance in individuals with cerebellar damage. Our … s in walking speed were affected by the level of balance challenge but not by age, ataxia severity, proprioception, or duration of exercise. CONCLUSIONS: Improvement in locomotor performance in people with cerebellar ataxia was observable after a 6-week home balance exercise program. The exercise program must be designed to provide a significant challenge to th …

Mutations in ZMYND10, a gene essential for proper axonemal assembly of inner and outer dynein arms in humans and flies, cause primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a ciliopathy characterized by airway disease, infertility, and laterality defects, often caused by dual … ry neurons and sperm. In these cells, P-element-mediated gene silencing caused IDA and ODA defects, proprioception deficits, and sterility due to immotile sperm. Drosophila Zmynd10 with an equivalent c.47T>G (p.Val16Gly) missense change rescued mutant male sterility less than the wild-type did. Tagged Drosophila ZMYND10 is localized primarily to the cytoplasm, a …

Chronic ankle instability.

Chronic instability of the ankle and anterolateral impingement syndrome are abnormalities that present as a result of inversion and forced plantar-flexion traumas of the foot, despite strict conservative management in the ER and in rehabilitation. A conservative approach is always the first choice of treatment, including anti-inflammatory medications, rehabilitation and proprioception, infiltration with steroids in impingement cases, and use of orthotics, whose true effectiveness is the subject of multiple studies and much debate. Good to excellent results can be obtained surgically with a min…

A tarantula spider toxin, GsMTx4, reduces mechanical and neuropathic pain.

Mechanosensitive channels mediate various physiological functions including somatic sensation or pain. One of the peptide toxins isolated from the venom of the Chilean rose tarantula spider (Grammostola spatulata), mechanotoxin 4 (GsMTx4) is known to block stretch-activated cation channels. Since mechanosensitive channels in sensory neurons are thought to be molecular sensors for mechanotransduction, i.e., for touch, pressure, proprioception, and pain, we considered that the venom might block some types of mechanical pain. In order to prepare sufficiently large amounts of GsMTx4 for in vivo no…

Exercise and sport in the treatment of haemophilic patients: a systematic review.

In haemophiliacs, the physical condition, muscular strength, aerobic resistance, anaerobic resistance and proprioception have all diminished. Muscle atrophy and instability, being more vulnerable to stressful motor demands, increase the risk of lesion and establish a vicious circle that is hard to break: pain, immobility, atrophy, articular instability and repeated bleeding episodes. In haemophilia, physical and/or sporting activities were not recommended until the seventies. Nowadays, the overall policy is to recommend certain physical activities, especially swimming, to improve the patient's…

Methylmercury poisoning: long-term clinical, radiological, toxicological, and pathological studies of an affected family.

For 3 months in 1969 a family in the United States that included a pregnant mother consumed pork containing methylmercury. Children, aged 20, 13, and 8 years and a neonate, developed severe neurological signs. Twenty-two years later, the 2 oldest had cortical blindness or constricted visual fields, diminished hand proprioception, choreoathetosis, and attentional deficits. Magnetic resonance images showed tissue loss in the calcarine and parietal cortices and cerebellar folia. The youngest had quadriplegia, blindness, and severe mental retardation until their deaths. The brain of the 8-year-old…

Tennis leg: Diagnosis and management - A state-of-the-art review.

Injuries at the medial gastrocnemius-soleus junction are common among athletes and physically active individuals. They typically result from sudden overstretching or repetitive microtrauma, leading to significant calf pain and functional limitations. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, with ultrasound or MRI used to assess injury severity. Most cases are managed conservatively, including rest, cryotherapy, anti-inflammatory therapy, and structured rehabilitation focusing on gradual stretching, eccentric strengthening, and proprioceptive training. Recovery generally occurs within 6-12 weeks, with

Genotype-Specific Postural Control Deficits in Hemophilia A: Insights from Center of Pressure Analysis Beyond Radiographic Arthropathy.

Hemophilia is an X-linked inherited bleeding disorder characterized by joint hemorrhages and progressive arthropathy. While mutation type is known to influence disease severity, its impact on postural balance strategies has remained unclear. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between gene mutation type and postural control in hemophilia A patient using center of pressure (CoP) analysis and radiographic joint assessment with the Pettersson score. Thirty-five participants were divided into an INV group (intron 22 or intron 1 inversion of the F8 gene) and a NonINV group (oth

Sports and Rehabilitation Medicine Perspectives in the Functional Management of Hallux Valgus.

Hallux valgus (HV) is one of the most common forefoot deformities and can substantially impair daily function and quality of life. With rapid advances in sports medicine and rehabilitation science, management strategies have shifted from passive structural correction toward active functional restoration. Growing evidence supports the role of muscle strengthening, neuromuscular control, proprioceptive retraining, and biomechanical optimization in improving pain, stability, and gait performance in patients with HV. This narrative review summarizes recent progress in nonsurgical interventions for

Rethinking the Assessment of Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition After ACL Reconstruction: Implications for Return-to-Sport Decision-Making-A Narrative Review.

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) is a neuromuscular impairment commonly observed following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). This condition, characterized by persistent quadricep inhibition due to altered afferent feedback, significantly impacts neuromuscular recovery, delaying return to running and sport. Despite advancements in rehabilitation strategies, AMI may persist for months or even years after ACLR, leading to muscle strength asymmetries, altered biomechanics, and an increased risk of reinjury. The mechanisms underlying AMI involve both peripheral (joint effusion, m

Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Elderly.

Elderly of ages greater than or equal to 65 years represent nearly 20% of the US population. Physiological functions of nearly all organ systems decline and the prevalence of major diseases increase with aging. Progressive musculoskeletal disabilities of the elderly with vestibular and proprioceptive neural dysfunction lead to poor balance, unsteady gait, and frequent falls that are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in those greater than or equal to 65 years of age. Osteoporosis, defined by a marked decrease in mineral bone density, as quantified by dual-energy x-ray absorptiom

Evaluating proxies for motion sickness in rodent.

Motions sickness (MS) occurs when the brain receives conflicting sensory signals from vestibular, visual and proprioceptive systems about a person's ongoing position and/or motion in relation to space. MS is typified by symptoms such as nausea and emesis and implicates complex physiological aspects of sensations and sensorimotor reflexes. Use of animal models has been integral to unraveling the physiological causality of MS. The commonly used rodents (rat and mouse), albeit lacking vomiting reflex, reliably display phenotypic behaviors of pica (eating of non-nutritive substance) and conditione
