Comparison of immune responses in mice infected with different strains of Strongyloides venezuelensis.

In human hosts and in murine models, the immune response to Strongyloides spp. is Th2 type. In addition, the profile of the host immune response follows various symptoms induced by Strongyloides spp. In the present study, we demonstrated that the L2 and L49 strains of Strongyloides venezuelensis obtained from Bolomys lasiurus and Nectomys squamipes induced significant and similar increases in eosinophil/mononuclear cell counts in the blood, peritoneal cavity fluid and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid when compared with uninfected mice. However, in the first 3 days of infection, IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-

Seroepidemiological survey of rodents collected at a U.S. military installation, Yongsan Garrison, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

A seroepidemiological study of selected rodent-borne diseases (hantavirus [Seoul [SEO] virus], scrub typhus [Orientia tsutsugamushi], murine typhus [Rickettsia typhi], and leptospirosis [Leptospira interrogans]), as part of the U.S. military rodent surveillance and control program, was conducted from 2001 through 2005 at Yongsan Garrison, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Rodents were collected to determine the prevalence of rodent-borne diseases at a U.S. military installation in an urban environment. A total of 1,750 rodents representing three species was collected by using baited live traps (Tomaha

The natural hosts for larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma neumanni and Amblyomma parvum (Acari: Ixodidae).

Based on the hypothesis that birds and rodents are important hosts for subadults of the Neotropical Amblyomma neumanni and Amblyomma parvum ticks, a survey of these type of hosts was carried out from July 2004 to March 2006, in Quilino (A. parvum) and Dean Funes (A. neumanni), Córdoba province, Argentina. Additionally, monthly tick counts were performed on cattle and goats with occasional tick search in other domestic hosts. Records of questing height of subadult ticks on vegetation were also carried out monthly. Rodents (n = 123) and birds (n = 122) captured in Dean Funes showed no infestatio

Leptospirosis: an emerging health problem in Thailand.

Leptospirosis is an emerging health problem in Thailand, with dramatic increases in reported incidence since 1996. The annual number of reported leptospirosis cases increased from 398 cases in 1996 to 14,285 cases in 2000. In 2001, 2002, and 2003, the number of reported cases decreased, but still remained high at 10,217, 6,864, and 4,958 cases, respectively. The epidemiological characteristics of leptospirosis in Thailand include a peak incidence in September and October in association with the rainy season. A vast majority of the cases (90%) were reported in the Northeast region. The case fat

The evolution of flea-borne transmission in Yersinia pestis.

Transmission by fleabite is a recent evolutionary adaptation that distinguishes Yersinia pestis, the agent of plague, from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and all other enteric bacteria. The very close genetic relationship between Y. pestis and Y. pseudotuberculosis indicates that just a few discrete genetic changes were sufficient to give rise to flea-borne transmission. Y. pestis exhibits a distinct infection phenotype in its flea vector, and a transmissible infection depends on genes that are specifically required in the flea, but not the mammal. Transmission factors identified to date suggest

Re-evaluation of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis status in North Sinai Governorate, Egypt.

Generally speaking, there are at least few endemic zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in the Sinai and the Suez Canal Governorates. A spotlight survey for new cases of human ZCL among out-patients with skin complaints revealed sixteen out of 100 (16%) individuals examined. But, none ZCL infection was found among 50 normal individuals. The typing of three human isolates proved to be Leishmania major Zymodeme London 70. Trapping and examination of the rodent reservoirs and sand-fly vector(s) were carried out as well, but will be published later on.

Rickettsia typhi infection in wild rodents from central Spain.

When sera from 218 rodents captured in two provinces of central Spain were tested, by indirect immunofluorescence, for antibodies to Rickettsia typhi, 46 (21.1%) were found to be positive, at titres between 1:20 and 1:320. The seropositives included rodents of each of the five species collected: Mus musculus, Mus spretus, Apodemus sylvaticus, Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus. Rickettsia typhi infection appears to be common and widespread among the rodents of central Spain.

The key roles of selection and migration in the ecology of Lyme borreliosis.

The roles of selection and migration of B. burgdorferi s. l. were studied. Questing adult Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected across Europe and analysed for infection with B. burgdorferi s. l. Analysis of the genospecies in individual ticks showed that B. garinii and B. valaisiana segregate from B. afzelii. Segregation of bird- and rodent-associated Borrelia genotypes can be explained by the operation of complement-mediated selection in the midgut of the feeding tick. Phylogenetic analyses of B. burgdorferi s. l. indicate high rates of migration for bird-associated genotypes. Altogether, it is

Parallel phylogenies of Pneumocystis species and their mammalian hosts.

The single name Pneumocystis carinii consists of an heterogeneous group of specific fungal organisms that colonize a very wide range of mammalian hosts. In the present study, mitochondrial large subunit (mtLSU) and small subunit (mtSSU) rRNA sequences of P. carinii organisms from 24 different mammalian species were compared. The mammals were included in six major groups: Primates (12 species), Rodents (5 species), Carnivores (3 species), Bats (1 species), Lagomorphs (1 species), Marsupials (1 species) and Ungulates (1 species). Direct sequencing of PCR products demonstrated that specific mtSSU

Carcinogenic aspect of xenobiotic molecules belonging to the peroxisome proliferator family.

It is known that a short-term exposure of rat, mice or incubation of hepatic cells with fibrate molecules leads to increase in peroxisome number and cell hyperplasia. Further, long-term incubation of cells (at least a year) show transformed characteristics with foci and nodules. To explain the hepatocarcinogenic effect of peroxisome proliferators in rodents we studied the effect of peroxisome proliferators on rat liver oncogenes expression. Earlier, we reported an increase in liver and kidney mRNA level of c-myc and N-myc. Since several metabolic genes are activated by PPAR (peroxisome prolife

Small mammal populations and community under conditions of extremely high thallium contamination in the environment.

Studies were carried out in the vicinity of a zinc smelter in southern Poland, 50 km northwest of Krakow, where the previous measurements with another bioindication method revealed huge thallium levels in the environment. The mammals (106 individuals in total) were captured in four wooded areas situated 1.5 to 2.5 km in various directions from the plant and in two reference sites, located far from industrial emission sources. Very high Tl levels were found in livers and kidneys of all mammals examined from the two areas nearest the smelter. Bank voles were the most loaded (maximum Tl in kidney

Ubiquitous presence of a mecA homologue in natural isolates of Staphylococcus sciuri.

In an effort to explore the origin and/or reservoirs of the genetic determinant(s) of methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, we examined over 200 strains representing 13 different species within the genus Staphylococcus for the presence of the mecA gene, using a DNA probe internal to this gene prepared from a methicillin-resistant strain of S. aureus. Occasional mecA- positive isolates were detected among several staphylococcal species. On the other hand, each one of the 134 isolates of Staphylococcus sciuri, a species considered taxonomically the most primitive among staphylococci a

Properties of peroxisomes from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis).

This report presents new data on mammalian peroxisomes by studying an unusual rodent: the jerboa (Jaculus orientalis). This animal exhibits some unique peroxisomal properties compared to the rat, such as higher cyanide-insensitive palmitoyl-CoA oxidase specific activity, pattern differences in SDS-PAGE peroxisomal proteins as well as in acyl-CoA oxidase immunoblotting. There is also a peculiar response to a peroxisome proliferator, ciprofibrate. With 250 ppm of ciprofibrate in the diet for 2 weeks, we observed a limited liver peroxisome proliferation as well as a palmitoyl-CoA oxidase activity

Isolation of Leishmania (L.) mexicana from wild rodents and their possible role in the transmission of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis in the state of Campeche, Mexico.

Leishmania parasites were isolated from four of seven small rodent species captured in the State of Campeche, Mexico. Signs and/or symptoms of leishmanial infection were restricted to the tail of the mice. Peromyscus yucatanicus endemic to the peninsula of Yucatan and Oryzomys melanotis were added to the list of carriers of Leishmania. Leishmania (L.) mexicana, characterized by an indirect immunofluorescence antibody method using monoclonal antibodies, was identified in one Sigmodon hispidus and one Or. melanotis. The possible role of the different species as primary reservoirs of Leishmania i

Babesiosis in Wisconsin: a potentially fatal disease.

Babesiosis is emerging as an important tick-borne zoonosis in the United States. Most reported cases of this parasitic disease have been acquired in the Northeast. To date, only two clinical cases of Babesia microti infection acquired in the upper Midwest have been described. We report eight more cases. Most if not all of the 10 total cases probably were acquired in northwestern Wisconsin. Three cases (30% of 10) we now report were fatal and occurred in elderly patients (65-75 years old) who died after complicated hospital courses. One patient probably had had a latent Babesia infection that a

Neurobehavioral effects of developmental methylmercury exposure.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a global environmental problem and is listed by the International Program of Chemical Safety as one of the six most dangerous chemicals in the world's environment. Human exposure to MeHg primarily occurs through the consumption of contaminated food such as fish, although catastrophic exposures due to industrial pollution have occurred. The fetus is particularly sensitive to MeHg exposure and adverse effects on infant development have been associated with levels of exposure that result in few, if any, signs of maternal clinical illness or toxicity. High levels of prenata

[Studies on PCB toxicity involving 2C subfamily cytochrome P450].

It has been demonstrated that PCB metabolism is mainly catalyzed by 1A and 2B subfamily cytochrome P450s, CYP1A1/2 and CYP2B1/2. These studies were conducted mostly with hepatic enzymes in rodents. The 1A and 2B subfamily P450 s are constitutively expressed little, but markedly induced by xenobiotics such as 3-methylcholanthrene and phenobarbital in rodents. On the other hand, the recent studies showed that cytochrome P450s in human liver are remarkably different from isoform of rodents in constitution and enzyme activities. In the present study, we first tried to metabolize some PCBs with 2C

Tick-borne borreliosis in west Africa.

Reported cases of tick-borne relapsing fever due to the spirochaete Borrelia crocidurae are rare in West Africa, and few epidemiological data are available. To see how common relapsing fever is in Senegal thick blood smears from cases of fever of unknown origin and from randomly selected clinic outpatients from a rural dispensary were examined for Borrelia. The prevalence of Borrelia infections in small mammals was also assessed. Borrelia was seen in smears of 12 (0.9%) of 1340 children. All children who tested positive had complained of acute fever. Prevalence was 0% (0/496), 0.5% (2/417), 1.

Distribution of neutralizing antibodies to California and Bunyamwera serogroup viruses in horses and rodents in California.

Neutralization tests were done on sera from 141 horses from high elevation regions of California. Antibody prevalences to Jamestown Canyon, snowshoe hare, and California encephalitis viruses in the California serogroup and Northway virus in the Bunyamwera serogroup were 55%, 43%, 18%, and 46%, respectively. In 51 horses from rural low elevation regions, seroprevalences were 31%, 35%, 35%, and 37%, respectively. Twenty-four horses from a suburban lowland area were seronegative, except for a single horse with a low titer to snowshoe hare virus. Seroprevalence to Jamestown Canyon and snowshoe har
