BACKGROUND: Tuberculous spondylitis is a significant health burden in the Third world. Tuberculosis and its complications are on the increase because of the HIV/AIDS challenge. The aim of this study was to review the patients managed for tuberculous spondylitis at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients seen at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital between January 1999 and December 2002 with tuberculosis of the spine. Patients case notes were reviewed after collating out-and-in-patient records.

The progression of post-tubercular kyphosis in 61 children who received ambulatory chemotherapy was studied prospectively. The angles of deformity and kyphosis were measured for each patient at diagnosis, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months later and every year thereafter for 15 years. During the course of the disease signs of instability appeared on the radiographs of some of the children. These were dislocation of the facets, posterior retropulsion of the diseased fragments, lateral translation of the vertebrae in the anteroposterior view and toppling of the superior vertebra. Each sign was allocated

In this case report, a 56 year old patient with tuberculous destruction of the right sacroiliac joint is presented. Diagnosis was delayed because of unspecific signs of lumbalgia, which were interpreted as the consequence of nerve root compression. There was a specific infiltration into the surrounding intra- and extrapelvic muscles. Therapy is surgical, followed by a combination drug therapy for at least one year.

Systemic complications of intravesicular BCG for bladder carcinoma are uncommon, and include fever, pneumonia, hepatitis, arthralgias, or skin rash. Local complications of BCG therapy for bladder cancer include cystitis, prostatitis, epididymo-orchitis, granulomatous lymphadenitis, or ureteral obstruction. We believe this is the first case of Mycobacterium bovis vertebral osteomyelitis and psoas abscess complicating intravesicular BCG therapy for bladder carcinoma.

Roentgenographic evidence of avascular necrosis of the upper part of the dens was observed in thirteen of ninety-four patients treated for tuberculous kyphosis or non-tuberculous scoliosis using halo-pelvic distraction. Four patients had some residual loss of motion. A significant relationship was demonstrated between avascular necrosis and the amount of distraction visible on roentgenograms.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous (TB) osteomyelitis is a rare, but challenging infection, that mandates antituberculosis antibiotics, and potentially surgical intervention. Per the Gulhane Askeri Tip Akademisi (GATA) classification system, corrective reconstruction is indicated in severe cases, where the kyphotic deformity is >20° (GATA Class III). Here, we describe a case of BCG vaccine-induced lumbar TB osteomyelitis at the L1-2 level in a patient presenting with mechanical pain and a focal, nonfixed kyphotic deformity of 36.1°. Surgery consisted of percutaneous fixation with pedicle screws without d

From 2012 to 2013, 300 adults under investigation of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) were tested with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in central spinal fluid (CSF), followed by TBM score calculation. There were 33(11%) confirmed TBM cases based on clinical findings, CSF-culture; biopsy/necropsy exams and clinical improvement after tuberculosis specific treatment. Other 267 adults were classified as non-TBM. Based on the original score there were 143 possible cases (6≤score≤11) and 20(60.6%) out of 33 TBM; among 27 probable TBM (score≥12) there were 13/33 (39.4%) confirmed cases. The CSF-PCR detec

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of 18fluoro-deoxy glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) scan in documenting the disease burden in patients with tuberculous meningitis (TBM), and compare these findings with conventional imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten patients with definite TBM were prospectively recruited. The severity of TBM was graded into stage I to III. The patients were subjected to whole body 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging and MRI brain. 18F-FDG PET/CT results were compared with the findings of brain MRI and other convecti

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein astrocytopathy (A-GFAP-A) is an autoimmune central nervous system(CNS) disease characterized by GFAP IgG as a biomarker. Several cases of individuals with A-GFAP-A initially misdiagnosed as infectious diseases of the central nervous system have been reported in research. We report three cases of A-GFAP-A misdiagnosed as viral meningitis or tuberculous meningitis (TBM). We summarize recent cases of A-GFAP-A misdiagnosed as central nervous system infections through a literature review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three cases of A-GFAP-A were ini

In the 26th week of gestation, a 29-year-old pregnant office employee was referred to the pulmonary department of Linz General Hospital (AKH) under the suspicion of tuberculosis. She complained of a cough with intermittent hemoptysis and pain in the thoracic spine from which she had been suffering the past 9 weeks. A plain chest X-ray showed a dense infiltrate on the right side and multiple smaller shadows in both lungs. Laboratory testing revealed anemia, leukocytosis, and an increase of C-reactive protein. All tests for tuberculosis were negative.A bronchoscopy was performed and biopsies wer

BACKGROUND: The subject was a hospital surgeon who, in the course of routine outpatient surgery with aspiration to collect right lumbar material in a patient with suspected TB infection, accidentally punctured the fifth finger of the left hand with the needle used for this procedure. This led to involvement of the fifth finger of the left hand restricted to the soft tissue with preservation of joint and bone and tenosynovial involvement of the entire extremity.
OBJECTIVES: To draw attention to the repercussions for insurance with resulting absence from work for 126 days and an assessment of b

INTRODUCTION: Between 1997 and 2006, we treated 11 patients with tuberculotic spondylitis and 19 with pyogenic spondylitis using a two-staged operation (posterior spinal instrumentation, followed by anterior debridement and fusion).
METHOD: We compared changes in inflammatory reactions, postoperative complications, organisms obtained during anterior debridement, neurological status, bone union, and suppression of the infection between the patients with tuberculotic and pyogenic spondylitis.
PATIENTS: All patients in both groups achieved bone union and suppression of the infected sites. Decre
