Neurod1 Is Essential for the Primary Tonotopic Organization and Related Auditory Information Processing in the Midbrain.

Hearing depends on extracting frequency, intensity, and temporal properties from sound to generate an auditory map for acoustical signal processing. How physiology intersects with molecular specification to fine tune the developing properties of the auditory system that enable these aspects remains unclear. We made a novel conditional deletion model that eliminates the transcription factor NEUROD1 exclusively in the ear. These mice (both sexes) develop a truncated frequency range with no neuroanatomically recognizable mapping of spiral ganglion neurons onto distinct locations in the cochlea no

Multisession stereotactic radiosurgery for large vestibular schwannomas.

OBJECT: Microsurgery is not the only option for larger vestibular schwannomas (VSs); recent reviews have confirmed the feasibility and efficacy of radiosurgery for larger VSs. This study illustrates the outcomes of a series of large VSs after multisession stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). METHODS: A series of 33 VSs larger than 8 cm(3) (range 8-24 cm(3), mean 11 cm(3), median 9.4 cm(3)) were treated using the CyberKnife from 2003 to 2011 with the multisession SRS technique in 2-5 fractions (14-19.5 Gy). Five patients had undergone surgical removal and 5 had ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Nine pa

[Cochleovestibular disorders: approaches to diagnostics and treatment].

The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of introduction of milgamma and milgamma compositum in the treatment of 52 patients with cochleovestibular disorders of different etiology. Thirteen patients enrolled in the study received standard therapy and 39 others were given its combination with milgamma preparations. Combined therapy with milgamma and milgamma compositum ensured faster vestibular compensation including posturographic characteristics than the standard treatment (within 3-4 weeks compared with 5 weeks in controls). The results of the study give reason to recommend milgamma

Correlation between arteriosclerotic changes and prognosis in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.

Symptoms such as vertigo and unsteady gait occur in various diseases and are among the relatively common chief complaints. Even at present, the mechanisms underlying these disorders are unclear. We report a significant correlation between a prolonged period of resolution of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and histories of lifestyle-related illnesses. We consider the possibility of correlating between BPPV prognosis and arteriosclerotic changes. Using carotid ultrasonography, we examined maximum intima-media thickness (IMT), maximum common carotid artery IMT, and biochemical examina

Histochemical localization of the extracellular matrix components in the annular ligament of rat stapediovestibular joint with special reference to fibrillin, 36-kDa microfibril-associated glycoprotein (MAGP-36), and hyaluronic acid.

The annular ligament across the stapediovestibular joint connects the stapes footplate and the vestibular window and plays an important role in the sound conductive system of the ear. In this study, we investigated the distribution of extracellular matrix components in the ligament by histochemical methods at light and electron microscopic levels. As results, light microscopic immunohistochemistry of fibrillin and 36-kDa microfibril-associated glycoprotein (MAGP-36) showed intense immunoreactivities in the annular ligament between the stapes footplate and vestibular window. In addition, the hi

Acute peripheral vestibular syndrome of a vascular cause.

BACKGROUND: Acute peripheral vestibular syndrome (APVS) is an idiopathic peripheral vestibulopathy characterized by prolonged vertigo (over 24 h), nausea, vomiting, and postural instability. There has been no previous report of APVS presumably of a vascular cause. OBJECTIVES: To describe APVS presumably resulting from a vascular disturbance with embolic cerebral infarction. PATIENT: A 67-year-old woman developed sudden onset of severe isolated vertigo, nausea, and vomiting, which lasted for 3 days. Ten days earlier, she had had 4 episodes of transient vertigo lasting a few minutes. She had a

Differential role of CYP2E1-mediated metabolism in the lethal and vestibulotoxic effects of cis-crotononitrile in the mouse.

Several alkylnitriles are toxic to sensory systems, including the vestibular system, through yet undefined mechanisms. This study addressed the hypothesis that the vestibular toxicity of cis-crotononitrile depends on CYP2E1-mediated bioactivation. Wild-type (129S1) and CYP2E1-null female mice were exposed to cis-crotononitrile at 0, 2, 2.25 or 2.5 mmol/kg (p.o.) in either a baseline condition or following exposure to 1% acetone in drinking water to induce CYP2E1 expression. The exposed animals were assessed for vestibular toxicity using a behavioral test battery and through surface observation

Topical gentamicin-induced hearing loss: a mitochondrial ribosomal RNA study of genetic susceptibility.

Mitochondrial ribosomal RNA mutation has been shown to predispose affected individuals to aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss (AIHL). An A-to-G nucleotide substitution at the 1555 position within the 12S ribosomal RNA gene has been identified with a maternally inherited pattern in affected Asian pedigrees. The aim of this study was to identify the frequency of this DNA polymorphism in subjects who appear to show hypersensitivity to topical (middle ear) application of aminoglycoside. In this pilot study, 10 subjects with AIHL were recruited. Eight underwent vestibular ablative therapy with midd
