Fractional ablative carbon dioxide laser followed by topical sodium stibogluconate application: A treatment option for pediatric cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a protozoan zoonotic parasitic infection with cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral manifestations. Israel is endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis, which is a self-limited disease but is associated with scarring, which is often a source of psychological and social burden for patients. Scars can be especially devastating for children and teenagers. A wide range of physical and medical approaches is used to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis, among which intralesional injections of sodium stibogluconate rank among the most frequently used. Unfortunately, despite being eff

Imported new world cutaneous leishmaniasis in a traveller from Slovakia.

We present a case of imported leishmaniasis in a 31-year-old woman from Slovakia, who visited the countries of South America for three months in 2011. On 29 and 31 August 2011, she was probably infected with Leishmania parasites in the jungles of Ecuador. Approximately one week after returning to Slovakia, a small papules appeared on patient's left leg. Another wound was found after two weeks. Both ulcers were enlarging. We proved amastigote forms of Leishmania spp. only in repeated dermal scrapings from the edge of the ulcer by Giemsa staining after negative results from examination of a woun

Outbreak of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Peruvian Military Personnel Undertaking Training Activities in the Amazon Basin, 2010.

Military personnel deployed to the Amazon Basin are at high risk for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). We responded to an outbreak among Peruvian Army personnel returning from short-term training in the Amazon, conducting active case detection, lesion sample collection, and risk factor assessment. The attack rate was 25% (76/303); the incubation period was 2-36 weeks (median = 8). Most cases had one lesion (66%), primarily ulcerative (49%), and in the legs (57%). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (59/61 = 97%) and L. (V.) guyanensis (2/61 = 3%).

Combination therapy with nitazoxanide and amphotericin B, Glucantime®, miltefosine and sitamaquine against Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum intracellular amastigotes.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease that affects poorest population mainly in developing countries, representing one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity. Therefore, efforts to find new chemotherapeutics for leishmaniasis remain a priority. Previous reports demonstrated the in vitro and in vivo antileishmanial activity of nitazoxanide, an antiprotozoan agent used in the treatment of infectious diarrhea. The present work was carried out to determine the effect of nitazoxanide in combination with current antileishmanial drugs. Mouse peritoneal macrophages were infected with Leishmania

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in Nepal: a retrospective cohort study (2000-2010).

INTRODUCTION: Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a cutaneous complication appearing after treatment of visceral leishmaniasis, and PKDL patients are considered infectious to sand flies and may therefore play a role in the transmission of VL. We estimated the risk and risk factors of PKDL in patients with past VL treatment in south-eastern Nepal. METHODS: Between February and May 2010 we traced all patients who had received VL treatment during 2000-2009 in five high-endemic districts and screened them for PKDL-like skin lesions. Suspected cases were referred to a tertiary care hospi

Electrochemical degradation of the β-blocker metoprolol by Ti/Ru 0.7 Ir 0.3 O 2 and Ti/SnO 2-Sb electrodes.

Electrochemical oxidation has been proposed for the elimination of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other organic micropollutants from complex waste streams. However, the detrimental effect of halide ion mediators and the generation of halogenated by-products in this process have largely been neglected thus far. In this study, we investigated the electrochemical oxidation pathways of the β-blocker metoprolol in reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) from a water reclamation plant using titanium anodes coated with Ru(0.7)Ir(0.3)O(2) or SnO(2)-Sb metal oxide layers. The results of liquid chromatograph

Visceral leishmaniasis in 13 pediatric patients in Turkey: treatment experience.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a life-threatening systemic infection caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania and transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies. Leishmaniases are widespread in most countries in the Mediterranean basin, including Turkey. Leishmania infantum is responsible for VL in Turkey. We previously reported 19 children with VL who were diagnosed during the period of January 2000 to December 2003. In this study, 13 consecutive cases of VL admitted to our hospital between December 2003 and January 2008 were analysed retrospectively. Fever, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly were most c

[Trace elements and endemic goiter].

The effects of xenobiotics on morphological structure and function of the thyroid gland (TG) were analysed. Salts of heavy metals (zink, lead, copper, cadmium, surma etc.) were measured in TG of 152 citizens of Kama region who had died of trauma in the 1960s (n = 73), 1990s (n = 20) and 2000s (n = 52). TG is shown to accumulate xenobiotics. As the examinees had no occupational contact with heavy metal salts (HMS), their deposits in TG is explained by anthropogenic pollution of the environment. HMS in the thyroid tissue was much lower than in later decades indicating aggravation of environmenta

Emergence or re-emergence of visceral leishmaniasis in areas of Somalia, north-eastern Kenya, and south-eastern Ethiopia in 2000-01.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was known to be endemic in Somalia along the basins of the (Middle) Shebelle and (Lower) Juba rivers, and in Kenya in parts of the Rift Valley, on the border with Uganda and the Eastern Provinces. From May 2000 to August 2001, we diagnosed 904 patients with VL. The patients came from an area which spanned the Wajir and Mandera districts of north-eastern Kenya, southern Somalia, and south-eastern Ethiopia. Small numbers of patients were also seen in northern Somalia. These areas were either previously non-endemic for VL, or had only sporadic cases prior to the epidem

Immunological selection for Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis antigens.

Comparative ELISA and selective immunoblotting procedures were used in attempts to identify differential serological indicators of infection with the Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis complex, infection with the L. braziliensis species, and therapeutic cure of localized or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL or MCL). Although mean ELISA absorbance values were significantly higher for MCL sera than for LCL sera, absorbance could not be used as a reliable indicator of the clinical form of disease. Immunoblotting profiles were similar with sera from MCL and LCL. Pre-adsorption with heterologous tryp

Treatment of visceral leishmaniasis with sodium stibogluconate in Sudan: management of those who do not respond.

Almost all (98%) of 1593 visceral leishmaniasis (VL) patients treated with sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam; Wellcome) in Sudan between 1989 and 1995 and follow-up responded well to treatment. However, the other 33 patients, all of whom were seronegative for HIV, showed partial or no response. The two main causes of unresponsiveness were primary drug resistance (39.3%) and low drug dosages given at peripheral dispensaries (30.3%). All of those who had been sub-optimal doses were cured when adequate doses of the drug were given. A third cause was concurrent disease, particularly pulmonary tuber

Sodium stibogluconate (pentostan) overdose in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A 32-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) admitted to the hospital for treatment of visceral leishmaniasis was inadvertently given 10 times the prescribed first dose of sodium stibogluconate ([Sb] 6.5 g instead of 0.65 g). He experienced no immediate major toxicity during the first 48 hours, but a significant rise of pancreatic enzyme activities was observed (amylase at 10 times the upper limit of normal, lipase at 50 times the upper limit of normal) without clinical signs or indications on computed tomography (CT) of pancreatitis. The third day after the overdose, he de

Visceral leishmaniasis: new foci of infection in Libya.

Although cases of visceral leishmaniasis in Libya have been reported for over 80 years, all these reports were from the northern coastal areas near Tripoli and the Green Mountain area. Since 1985, there have been new cases of the disease from the southern part of Libya in the Saharan and sub-Saharan areas, an area 250 km to the south-west of Sabha. This southern area has recently undergone much agricultural organization with increasing water supply and other environmental changes, which may be partially responsible for the establishment of these new foci. Twenty patients with hepatosplenomegal

Relationship of Leishmania RNA Virus (LRV) and treatment failure in clinical isolates of Leishmania major.

OBJECTIVE: Leishmaniasis is caused by different Leishmania spp. Treatment failure (TF) of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a serious issue that may be due to various reasons, previous studies suggested Leishmania RNA virus (LRV) as a potential cause of TF. Two variant groups of LRV1 and LRV2 are reported. In this study, the presence of LRV1/LRV2 was compared in TF with treatment response (TR) isolates of L. major. Clinical isolates of 15 TF and 15 TR were collected from CL patients referred to the Health Centers of Isfahan. Genomic DNA was extracted to identify Leishmania spp. using ITS1-PCR-RF
