Visual acuity with correction was checked in 86 persons with anterior and posterior chamber lenses in various postoperative periods. In the majority of examines of both groups in the late postoperative period the visual acuity was correct. The results obtained in both groups of patients were compared. The causes of astigmatism detected in some cases were considered.

The IOP was checked in 86 eyes with implanted intraocular lenses in various postoperative periods. There was no essential difference in the behaviour of the IOP in persons with anterior or posterior chamber lenses. Causes of secondary glaucoma appearing in some cases were considered.

Forty-two infants who presented to the Children's Hospital in Boston with unilateral congenital cataracts and had cataract surgery by 6 months of age received serial refractions (N = 369) of their aphakic eyes during the first 4 years of life. We examined five patients who developed pupillary block after extracapsular cataract extraction. One of the patients also had a posterior chamber intraocular lens implanted at the time of cataract operation. In all five patients, pupillary block was promptly relieved by Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

The authors used a combined limbal and pars plana vitrectomy approach to treat 17 consecutive eyes (16 patients) with chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema associated with vitreous incarceration in the cataract wound. In each infant, the lens in one eye was removed by discission and aspiration, and the other lens was removed by lensectomy and anterior vitrectomy. Studies of high-speed motion pictures of the eyes of patients after extracapsular (EC) and intracapsular (IC) cataract extraction show that pseudophacodonesis and iridodonesis are the result of oscillations of the fluids in the anterior segment of the eye. These oscillations, initiated by movement of the eye, result in shearing forces on the corneal endothelium which may result in damage. Similar motion of the vitreous causes shearing forces which may damage the retina.

This report describes a series of 13 patients who underwent anterior vitrectomies for chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema (CME). All eyes had formed vitreous adherent to the intracapsular wound, vision of 20/50 or worse, and fluorescein angiographically documented CME for six months or more. Following the presentation of the results (success rate of 69%) and a discussion of this form of treatment, the beginning of a national, randomized, prospective study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment is described.

When an eye focuses on a distant target, it is often found that the long wavelength rays are focused on the receptors, but when the same eye looks at a target close to the eye, the green or blue rays are in focus in the retinal receptors. Sixty-four consecutive patients with aphakic penetrating keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty combined with intracapsular cataract extraction were reviewed in a prospective fashion with a minimum of a one-year follow-up. Of 78 patients eligible for prolonged wear contact lenses, 50 (65%) were successfully fitted and followed for four months to four years. Of 145 patients registered for an investigation of timolol, 27 patients were dropped for unrelated reasons. Extended wear of contact lenses is an attractive alternative to daily wear regimens. Immediate application has been for therapeutic purposes. Recently, cosmetic investigations have occurred, primarily outside of the United States. Regardless of the application, extended wear requires careful patient selection, fitting and post-fitting care to insure that ocular integrity has not been disturbed.

A search of the literature yielded only one other paper concerning the use of ibuprofen for ophthalmic purposes. Marsili and Conte 8 used ibuprofen on a total of 138 patients with a variety of problems, both surgical and nonsurgical.
