"Coming Correct": Conducting Community Engagement Studios to Adapt Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for the Chronic Pain-Depression Comorbidity Among Older Black Adults.

Older Black adults experience disproportionately high rates of chronic pain (CP) and depression, yet inequities in access, recognition, and culturally resonant treatment persist. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based group intervention for depression with emerging promise for CP. However, adaptations for older Black adults with comorbid CP-depression remain underexplored. Guided by cultural intervention adaptation and community engagement principles, we conducted four Community Engagement Studios with 20 older Black adults in Boston (ages 51-84), all reporting CP (≥ 3

Integration of cognitive behavioral therapy and mobile health applications among university students with depression: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Most applications for depression lack comprehensive theoretical integration and qualitative assessments of university students' needs remain insufficient. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the needs and experiences of university students with depressive symptoms and develop a theory-driven app design framework tailored to the target population. METHODS: A post-positivist qualitative framework was used to recognize the value of subjective experience. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 32 students with moderate to moderately severe depression. Reflexive thematic an

Profiles or Continua? Reproducible but Redundant Creativity-Resource Configurations in PISA 2022.

Assessed creative thinking is a cognitive individual-difference construct-related to, but not equivalent to, conventional intelligence-that PISA 2022 measured directly at scale. We asked how its associated resources are structured, and whether discrete student "types" or continuous dimensions better predict creative-thinking performance. Using 44 education systems (306,704 students; complete-indicator sample 235,240), we estimated senate-weighted Gaussian mixtures of nine within-system standardized creativity indicators and related them to performance (10 plausible values; Fay balanced repeate

Anticipation, memory, and top-down causation in living systems.

Many physical systems retain traces of their past, but living systems differ in that they use memory for anticipation. This paper develops the thesis that anticipation depends on memory. In living systems, stored information about past states enables the prediction and modulation of future behavior. Drawing on Robert Rosen's theory of anticipatory systems, Friston's free-energy principle, and recent examples from microbiology, immunology, and cognition, I argue that Rosen's "model" is the organized memory of a system. Memory-whether mechanical, chemical, genetic, epigenetic, bioelectric, neura

Intermittent Fasting as a Neuroprotective Strategy: Gut-Brain Axis Modulation and Metabolic Reprogramming in Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is emerging as a heterogeneous neurometabolic intervention with the possibility of changing the course of neurodegenerative diseases. Through the modulation of the gut-brain axis (GBA), cellular bioenergetics (or metabolic) reprogramming, and involvement in preserved stress adaptation pathways, IF influences a range of physiological mechanisms, including mitobiogenesis, autophagy, circadian rhythm alignment, and neuroinflammation. This review critically synthesises current preclinical and early clinical evidence illustrating IF's capability to supplement synaptic plas

Home-Based Occupational Therapy for Emotion-Related School Attendance Challenges: Two Case Studies.

Emotion-related school attendance challenges (ER-SAC) refer to school attendance difficulties rooted in emotional issues. This report examined the support process and outcomes of home-based occupational therapy in two junior high school students experiencing long-term absenteeism and social withdrawal. Both students exhibited emotional difficulties, including anxiety, interpersonal tension, and impulsivity, that disrupted daily routines, impaired self-care, and led to social avoidance. Occupational therapists initiated home visits by building trust, then gradually introduced strategies to rest

Assessing characteristics of mother-infant dyadic synchrony among vulnerable mothers using the Infant CARE-Index.

OBJECTIVE: The postnatal period crucially influences the mother-infant relationship and subsequently the infant's cognitive, physical, and psychosocial development. Poor maternal mental health may impact early interactions, potentially causing the infant's developmental needs to go neglected. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used the Infant CARE-Index to examine mother-infant interaction patterns among mothers with a history of depression and/or anxiety. Ten mother-infant dyads recruited from a Danish obstetric department participated in video recordings of mother-infant interaction

Mental exploration of future choices during immobility theta oscillations.

Mental exploration enables flexible evaluation of potential future choices, guiding decision-making without requiring direct real-world iterations. Although the hippocampus is known to be active while imagining the future, the precise mechanisms that support mental exploration of future choices remain unclear. In the hippocampus, the theta rhythm (4-12 Hz) is prevalent during movement and supports memory coding during real-world exploration by organizing neuronal activity patterns into short virtual path segments (theta sequences) around the rat's location. We observed these theta-related neur

"I am now on 'speaking terms' with my migraine monster" - patient experiences in acceptance-based cognitive behavioral therapy delivered via the internet for migraine: a randomized controlled pilot study using a mixed-method approach.

Migraine is a common neurological disorder globally. Migraines, with or without aura, are episodic and recurring with symptom-free periods. Frequent and prolonged attacks can lead to chronic migraine. This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate feasibility of therapist-guided, acceptance-based internet cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) as an adjunct to standard medical care for migraine patients in Swedish primary healthcare settings using a mixed methods approach. Participants (treatment n = 15, control n = 14) underwent qualitative and quantitative assessments to evaluat

Insula-Medial Prefrontal Cortex Functional Connectivity Modulated by Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation: An fMRI Study.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is an emerging neuromodulation technology that has been reported to be beneficial in the treatment of diseases by several studies, but its exact mechanism of action is still unclear. It has been demonstrated that taVNS can influence interoceptive signals. Notably, the processing of interoceptive signals is directly related to many diseases, such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The insula and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) communicate during the bottom-up transmission of taVNS-induced signals, and both play a role in interocept

Neural mechanisms distinguishing two types of cooperative problem-solving approaches: An fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Collaborative cooperation (CC) and division of labor cooperation (DLC) are two prevalent forms of cooperative problem-solving approaches in daily life. Despite extensive research on the neural mechanisms underlying cooperative problem-solving approaches, a notable gap exists between the neural processes that support CC and DLC. The present study utilized a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning technique along with a classic cooperative tangram puzzle task to investigate the neural mechanisms engaged by both friends and stranger dyads during CC versus DLC. The key findings

Screen-based digital learning methods in radiation oncology and medical education.

The field of radiation oncology is rapidly advancing through technological and biomedical innovation backed by robust research evidence. In addition, cancer professionals are notoriously time-poor, meaning there is a need for high quality, accessible and tailored oncological education programs. Digital learning (DL) is well-placed to cater to these needs, as it provides teaching options that can be delivered flexibly and on-demand from anywhere in the world. The evidence for usage of these techniques in medical education has expanded rapidly in recent years. However, there remains many reserva

Contribution of Ionotropic Glutamatergic Receptors to Excitability and Attentional Signals in Macaque Frontal Eye Field.

Top-down attention, controlled by frontal cortical areas, is a key component of cognitive operations. How different neurotransmitters and neuromodulators flexibly change the cellular and network interactions with attention demands remains poorly understood. While acetylcholine and dopamine are critically involved, glutamatergic receptors have been proposed to play important roles. To understand their contribution to attentional signals, we investigated how ionotropic glutamatergic receptors in the frontal eye field (FEF) of male macaques contribute to neuronal excitability and attentional cont

Omega-3 fatty acids increase OXPHOS energy for immune therapy of Alzheimer disease patients.

Sporadic late-onset Alzheimer disease (LOAD) preceded by mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the most common type of dementia. Long-term studies of immunity to pathogenic amyloid-β (Aβ) in LOAD are lacking. Innate immunity of LOAD patients is malfunctioning in phagocytosis and degradation of Aβ and LOAD patients' macrophage transcriptome and metabolome are deregulated. We previously showed omega-3 fatty acid (ω-3)-mediated repair of unfolded protein response and here we show much broader transcriptomic effects. ω-3 treatment in vitro and ω-3 supplementation by the drink Smartfish (SMF) in vivo

Dysfunctional Dynamics of Intra- and Inter-network Connectivity in Dementia With Lewy Bodies.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterized by the transient fluctuating cognition and recurrent visual hallucinations, which may be caused by disorders of the intrinsic brain network dynamics. However, little is known regarding the dynamic features of the brain network behind these symptoms in DLB. In the present study, the intra- and inter-brain network dynamics were explored on a time scale in 17 DLB and 20 healthy controls (HC) applying a sliding-window method followed by k-means clustering analysis. To further evaluate the impact of network dynamics on brain performance, the local an

Effect of maternal rumination and disengagement during childhood on offspring neural response to reward in late adolescence.

Maternal rumination is a cognitive-affective trait that could influence offspring's ability to respond flexibly to positive and negative events, depending on the quality of maternal problem-solving behaviors with which rumination co-occurs. As reward circuitry is sensitive to stressors and related to risk for depression, reward circuitry is an appropriate candidate mechanism for how maternal characteristics influence offspring. We evaluated the independent and combined effect of maternal rumination and disengagement on adolescent neural response to reward win and loss. Participants were 122 bo
