The clinico-radiological spectrum of Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome in adults.

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) is characterized by cerebral hemiatrophy, seizure, contralateral hemiplegia/hemiparesis, and mental retardation. In this study, clinical and radiological investigations of seven patients who were diagnosed with DDMS as adult age were evaluated and discussed. Seven patients (four male, three female) were included. The mean age ± SD of the patients was 46 ± 21 years. Clinical presentation of six patients was epileptic seizure. One patient was presented with head trauma due to a fall. Two patients had complex partial seizures, three patients had generalized to

Brain Abscesses Associated with Asymptomatic Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistulas.

Brain abscess commonly occurs secondary to an adjacent infection (mostly in the middle ear or paranasal sinuses) or due to hematogenous spread from a distant infection or trauma. Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are abnormal direct communications between the pulmonary artery and vein. We present two cases of brain abscess associated with asymptomatic pulmonary AVF. A 65-year-old woman was admitted with a headache and cognitive impairment that aggravated 10 days prior. An magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a brain abscess with severe edema in the right frontal lobe. We performed a

Infiltrative mass of the skull base and nasopharynx: A diagnostic conundrum.

Inflammatory skull base masses are enigmatic and often behaviourally unpredictable. We present a case of idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis (IHP) forming a central skull base mass to illustrate the process required when one investigates such skull base lesions. This is the first description of mass forming or tumefactive IHP extending into the nasopharynx. A 32-year old woman presented with frontal headaches and nasal discharge. She then deteriorated and was admitted with worsening headaches, serosanguinous nasal discharge and bilateral ophthalmoplegia. Multimodality imaging confirmed a d

Solitary fibrous tumor of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses: A case report.

UNLABELLED: Solitary Fibrous Tumors (SFT) are rare neoplasms first described in 1931 by Klemperer and Rabin. SFT's have mesenchymal rather than mesothelial origin. They arise mostly from serous membranes, although they also originate in other regions such as: the urogenital system, mediastinal space, lungs, vulva, orbit, thyroid, nasopharyngeal region, larynx, salivary glands. SFT of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are extremely rare. To the year 2014 only 33 cases were reported in English literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present a case of 58-year-old man with solitary fibrous tumo

Sphenoid sinus inverted papilloma: a case report and literature review.

Introduction Inverted papilloma is a rare benign tumor of the nasal fossa, which usually originates from its lateral wall. Only 5% of cases demonstrate exclusive sinus involvement. Primary sphenoid sinus involvement is even rarer. Although considered a benign lesion, the tumor has a potentially invasive nature and has also been found to have an associated malignancy rate of 7 to 15%. Objectives To report a case of inverted nasal papilloma originating in a rare location: the sphenoid sinus. Resumed Report a 56-year-old woman, presented to our outpatient clinic complaining of frontal headache, o

Asymmetric nasal mucosal thickening in healthy dogs consistent with the nasal cycle as demonstrated by MRI and CT.

The nasal cycle is a physiological phenomenon that causes regular cyclical congestion and decongestion of the venous sinusoids lining the nasal mucosa. The purpose of this prospective study was to describe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomographic (CT) features of the normal nasal cycle in a group of dogs. Five dogs were recruited that met the following criteria: 8 to 15 months old, nonbrachiocephalic breed, no clinical signs or history of nasal disease, and undergoing anesthesia for problems unrelated to the nasal cavity. Nasal MRI (n = 5) and CT scans (pre- and postcontrast,

Transfrontoethmoidal approach to medial intraconal lesions.

Object The standard superior craniotomy approach through the orbital roof is obstructed by numerous muscles, nerves, and vessels. Accessing the medial intraconal space also involves considerable brain retraction. The authors present a modified approach through the frontal sinus that overcomes these limitations. Methods Seven fixed silicone-injected cadaveric specimens were dissected bilaterally. In addition to the superior orbital wall, the ethmoidal sinuses and medial orbital wall were removed. The anatomical relationships between the major neurovascular complexes in the medial intraconal spa

[A case of systemic Lupus erythematosus complicated with multiple subcortical hemorrhage].

We described a case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated with multiple intracerebral hemorrhage. A 52-year-old female with no history of hypertension had been treated with steroid hormone therapy for more than 15 years. Four days before admission, she experienced acute onset of headache and nausea. On the day of admission, the patient suffered from headache and nausea again followed by a deteriorated level of consciousness. The computed tomographic scan revealed two subcortical hematomas in the right frontal and left temporo-occipital area with atypical findings compared to those

Management of CNS mucormycosis in the pediatric patient.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RM) is a rare, rapidly progressive disorder caused by fungi from the Mucoraceae family. With extensive central nervous system involvement, this disease is uniformly fatal within weeks. Mucormycosis normally presents in poorly controlled diabetics, intravenous drug abusers and immunocompromised patients. Many have advocated radical surgical resection (i.e. exenteration of the cavernous sinus with carotid sacrifice and en bloc resection) with administration of amphotericin B. We present a case of mucormycosis involving the paranasal sinuses and cranial base in a pedia

[Pericranial sinus].

This study concerns four cases of sinus pericranii observed at the Neurological Department of Nancy. Sinus pericranii is a direct communication between the outer surface of the skull and the intracranial venous sinuses. It may be congenital, acquired or traumatic. This abnormality, usually located in the midline and often in the frontal region, is usually symptomless, but some patients complain of headache, nausea and vertigo. Sinus pericranii shows as a fluctuating non pulsatile mass of reddish or bluish colour, expanding when the patient bends his head down. Radiography usually shows one or

[Caudal-angle aortography. Its usefulness for defining the coronary anatomy in cases of transposition of the great vessels].

With the purpose of obtaining an accurate definition of coronary arteries anatomy in complete transposition of the great arteries (concordant atrio-ventricular connection and discordant ventriculo-arterial connection), we performed a new angiographic technique in 14 patients with d-transposition of the great arteries and 1 patient with double-outlet right ventricle. This technique consists of using a balloon catheter with the frontal X ray tube cine-angiographic camera in caudal angulation (about 45 degrees), with balloon occlusion of the ascending aorta during the injection of the contrast me

Meningeal osteomas and chronic renal failure.

Osteomas, although usually found in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses or the mandible, may be located on the inner table of the skull. We report the incidence, distribution, histologic features, and clinical correlates of intracranial osteomas arising in the dura mater and the falx cerebri in 200 consecutive adult autopsies. Ten patients (5 per cent of autopsies) were found to have meningeal osteomas. The tumors were usually located at the dural-falx junction at the superior longitudinal sinus. Histologically, they resembled osteomas arising from other sites, but undecalcified sections generally

Clinical characteristics of tumor-induced osteomalacia lesions in the neurocranium and intracranial structures.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by excessive fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) secretion. However, TIO lesions located in the neurocranium (NC) and intracranial (IC) structures remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical features of TIO lesions in NC and IC structures and to compare them with those located in the sinuses. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with TIO who underwent tumor resection at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2016 and December 2023. Patients wi

Neutrophil extracellular traps are found at epithelial barriers in canine sinonasal aspergillosis.

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal aspergillosis (SNA) is a frequent cause of chronic nasal discharge, predominantly caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. The infection is typically confined to the nasal cavity and/or frontal sinuses, characterized by superficial mucosal fungal plaques and associated with severe lymphoplasmacytic and neutrophilic inflammation of the mucosa. While Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) have been demonstrated to restrict fungal hyphal proliferation in animal models, their presence and role in canine SNA remain unexplored. METHODS: In this study, we quantified the presence of NE

CFD-Enabled Deep Insert Nasal Delivery for Precision Sinus Targeting.

Traditional nasal spray delivery suffers from poor targeting, with most particles depositing in anterior nasal regions, leading to insufficient therapeutic effects, higher dosage requirements, and increased side effect risks. This study quantitatively evaluated nasal spray performance and assessed the benefits of deep versus shallow insertion. A standardized three-dimensional healthy nasal cavity model and computational fluid dynamics were employed, combining the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes k- ω turbulence model with a two-way coupled discrete phase model. Key spray parameters including in
