Differential change in alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic: the role of loneliness, socialization, and mental well-being.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in mental health issues and psychological distress, disruption to work/studying conditions, and social isolation particularly among young adults. Changes in these factors are differentially associated with alcohol use. Moreover, the relationship between these factors are bidirectional and may have fluctuated throughout the different phases of the pandemic. However, studies focusing on young adults had conflicting results, short follow-up periods, and lacked comprehensive data to describe underlying mechanisms. METHODS: 1067 young adults parti

Barriers and facilitators influencing parental adherence to prevention strategies for deformational plagiocephaly: Results from a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Deformational plagiocephaly can be prevented in many healthy infants if strategies are implemented early after birth. However, despite efforts to disseminate accurate information, parental adherence to evidence-based prevention strategies is a challenge. To date, factors - barriers and facilitators - influencing parental adherence to strategies have yet to be identified in a comprehensive manner. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to identify and synthesize current evidence on barriers and facilitators impacting adherence of parents of newborns to deformational plagiocephaly pre

COVID-19-Related Self-Stigma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Insomnia, and Smartphone Addiction Among Frontline Government Workers with COVID-19 Pandemic Control Duties.

PURPOSE: The duties related to COVID-19 control and prevention may have caused psychological stress for the individuals in charge (eg, frontline government workers) and have reportedly led to mental health issues, such as insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the prevalence of these COVID-19-related disorders and their associated factors remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence rates of insomnia, PTSD, COVID-19-related self-stigma, and smartphone addiction, along with the identification of risk factors and protective f

Socio-ecological predictors of mental health outcomes among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are at increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies are warranted that examine socio-ecological factors associated with these outcomes to inform interventions that support healthcare workers during future disease outbreaks. METHODS: We conducted an online cross-sectional study of healthcare workers during May 2020 to assess the socio-ecological predictors of mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We assessed factors at four socio-ecological levels: individual (e.g., gender), interpersonal (e.g., social supp

Increased nuclear translation of YAP might act as a potential therapeutic target for NF1-related plexiform neurofibroma.

Plexiform neurofibroma (pNF) in the head and neck is a characteristic feature in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and is associated with significant disfigurement and psychological distress. Yes-associated protein (YAP), the key molecule involved in the Hippo pathway, is a vital transductor that regulates the proliferation and remyelinating of Schwann cells. The functional status of YAP and its feasibility as a potential target are still unknown in pNF. A total of 17 pNF tumor tissue specimens from the head and neck were collected at the Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong

Can short-term video-EEG substitute long-term video-EEG monitoring in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures? A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), the commonest nonepileptic event, represent 20-30% of drug-resistant epilepsy. Correct identification of PNES avoids unnecessary hospitalization and exposure of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and helps implement appropriate psychological treatment. Long-term video-electroencephalography (LTVEEG) is the gold standard test to diagnose PNES. However, in a poor-resource country like India, hypothetically, short-term video-electroencephalography (STVEEG) may substitute it, as its usefulness is established in attack disorders. OBJECTIVE: The object

Substance Use and Psychological Distress Before and After the Military to Civilian Transition.

BACKGROUND: Those currently serving in the military constitute a vulnerable population given their high-risk status for substance use, and population data suggest that veterans continue to engage in significant substance use long after their military service ends. Recent research suggests that the separation transition from active duty to civilian life may be critical in terms of the future functioning of the veteran. METHODS: We sought to explore substance use prevalence, as well as potential emotional distress among veterans by retrospectively assessing substance use during active duty and

Delirium after cardiac surgery: A pilot study from a single tertiary referral center.

BACKGROUND: Advances in cardiac surgery has shifted paradigm of management to perioperative psychological illnesses. Delirium is a state of altered consciousness with easy distraction of thoughts. The pathophysiology of this complication is not clear, but identification of risk factors is important for positive postoperative outcomes. The goal of the present study was to prospectively identify the incidence, motoric subtypes, and risk factors associated with development of delirium in cardiac surgical patients admitted to postoperative cardiac intensive care, using a validated delirium monitor

Genome-wide analysis of over 106 000 individuals identifies 9 neuroticism-associated loci.

Neuroticism is a personality trait of fundamental importance for psychological well-being and public health. It is strongly associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and several other psychiatric conditions. Although neuroticism is heritable, attempts to identify the alleles involved in previous studies have been limited by relatively small sample sizes. Here we report a combined meta-analysis of genome-wide association study (GWAS) of neuroticism that includes 91 370 participants from the UK Biobank cohort, 6659 participants from the Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study (GS

The association between depression and anxiety disorders following facial trauma--a comparative study.

AIM: Although the surgical care provided for patients who have sustained a maxillofacial injury has advanced in recent years, psychological disorders may develop. Anxiety and depression may be a cause of significant morbidity in these patients. Such problems are often unrecognised and untreated. PATIENTS & METHODS: We undertook a comparative cross-sectional study in a cohort of adult patients to assess the association between traumatic facial injury and the presence of anxiety and depressive disorders. Study subjects were recruited during the period of June 2008 through August 2008. Fifty con

School refusal behavior in children and adolescents: a concept analysis.

School refusal behavior (SRB) is increasingly recognized across educational, pediatric, and mental health settings, yet its conceptual boundaries remain unclear, and the term is frequently conflated with school refusal, truancy, school withdrawal, school exclusion, and broader school attendance problems. This study used Walker and Avant's concept analysis method to clarify the meaning, defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of SRB. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO were searched for English-language literature published through January 2026, suppleme
