OBJECTIVE: Patellar taping is a conservative treatment that may reduce patellar malalignment and pain in people with patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis (OA). This study aimed to compare patellar alignment in people with and without patellofemoral joint OA and to evaluate immediate effects of patellar taping on patellar alignment and pain in people with patellofemoral joint OA.
METHODS: Patellar malalignment was measured from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; 15 degrees knee flexion) in 28 individuals (14 with patellofemoral joint OA and 14 asymptomatic, age-matched controls). In the patellofe

Traditional conservative treatment for patellar disorders is successful in about 80 percents of cases. We introduced two new conservative treatment protocols for patellar pathology in order to further improve the success rate. The first protocol consisted of high load/low repetition quadriceps femoris training (10 patients) while the second enclosed selective electrostimulation of vastus medialis muscle (7 patients). Results were evaluated clinically and neurophysiologically. High load/low repetition training resulted in significant increase of maximal voluntary contraction of quadriceps muscl

PURPOSE: To report the long-term clinical outcomes after isolated medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLr) to treat recurrent patellar instability.
METHODS: This was a single-center study of patients undergoing an isolated MPFLr between 2000 and 2011. All patients underwent reconstruction using hamstring autograft. The inclusion criteria were a minimum 10-year follow-up period and skeletally mature patients with more than 1 episode of patellar dislocation who underwent MPFLr without an associated bony procedure.
RESULTS: A total of 54 knees were available for final analysis. The

BACKGROUND: Concomitant cartilage injury is commonly associated with patellofemoral instability. While nonoperative treatment remains the gold standard for first time dislocators, there has been an increased trend toward addressing patellar instability when symptomatic cartilage disease is present.
INDICATIONS: A healthy active 29-year-old woman >2 years of patellar instability and pain symptoms in the right knee. Imaging revealed tibial tubercle to trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance of 19.8 mm, and a Caton Deschamps Ratio of 1.54. Initial staging arthroscopy demonstrated a near full thickness

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal trauma accounts for more than a third of emergency department visits, and accurate diagnosis and treatment can be challenging in the acute setting. The objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of a post-emergency orthopedic visit on diagnostic and therapeutic changes in patients with minor trauma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study in two French university hospitals. Adult patients referred to a post-emergency orthopedic visit for minor upper or lower limb trauma were included. Exclusion criteria included immediate surgica

BACKGROUND: Despite the strong research attention dedicated to reporting the injury incidence rate (IR) in many samples of basketball players, a dedicated review regarding the epidemiology of the injuries encountered in the sport is needed.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to meta-analyze the literature to quantify the IR of injuries according to mechanism, body location, and type while considering player sex, playing level, and exposure settings in basketball players.
METHODS: PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to October 2024. Studies reporting the injury IR in basketball

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and radiographic outcomes of patients undergoing a lateral opening distal femur osteotomy (DFO) to address valgus alignment and restore patellar stability.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent lateral opening DFO for recurrent patellar instability in the setting of valgus leg alignment at a single academic institution between January 2016 to December 2021 was performed. Patients without a minimum 24-month postoperative follow-up were excluded. Rates of recurrent patellar instability, patient-reported outcomes, and complications were asses

BACKGROUND: A laterally tracking patella is commonly seen in patients with chronic recurrent lateral patellar dislocations. Clinical appearance of the J-sign occurs when the patella is congruent with the trochlear groove in flexion and moves over the lateral border of the femoral condyle as the lower leg reaches complete extension. A Fulkerson osteotomy procedure corrects this maltracking of the patella by medially transferring the tibial tubercle. There are many radiographic patellofemoral indices that can be used describe this incongruence about the patelloformal joint. The current literatur

INTRODUCTION: Trochlear dysplasia is one of the main elements of patellofemoral instability. Although correction by trochleoplasty seems logical, the long-term outcome of this procedure is unknown and the progression to osteoarthritis has not been clarified. Thus, we performed a retrospective study of a series of sulcus deepening trochleoplasties with a 15-year follow-up whose goal was to (1) evaluate the long-term clinical outcome and radiological rate of osteoarthritis, and (2) define the results in relation to the type of instability and the grade of dysplasia.
HYPOTHESIS: Sulcus deepening
