Vessels of the Central Airways: A Bronchoscopic Perspective.

Blood supply of the tracheobronchial tree is derived from a dual system involving pulmonary and bronchial circulation. Various primary and secondary abnormalities of central airway vasculature can present with patterns that are distinct during bronchoscopy. These patterns maybe visualized during bronchoscopic evaluation of a patient with hemoptysis or as an incidental finding during an airway examination for other indications. Thorough knowledge of airway vasculature abnormalities and recognition of possible underlying pathophysiology is vital for the bronchoscopist. This review is a comprehen

[Prosopagnosia. Role of the right hemisphere in visual perception. (Apropos of a case after right occipital lobectomy)].

The authors describe a case of prosopagnosia which appeared a month after right occipital lobectomy. Results obtained by means of various tests devised to analyse this perception disorder have produced the following conclusions: 1) results of pairing tests which require a high level of perceptive differentiation are successful but after abnormally long delays; 2) in spite of this success, faces--even the patient's own--are not recognized; 3) this disorder extends to affect every task requiring recognition of the individual nature of a stimulus; 4) this individuality has the peculiarity of bein

Visual Cues Contribute Differentially to Audiovisual Perception of Consonants and Vowels in Improving Recognition and Reducing Cognitive Demands in Listeners With Hearing Impairment Using Hearing Aids.

PURPOSE: We sought to examine the contribution of visual cues in audiovisual identification of consonants and vowels-in terms of isolation points (the shortest time required for correct identification of a speech stimulus), accuracy, and cognitive demands-in listeners with hearing impairment using hearing aids. METHOD: The study comprised 199 participants with hearing impairment (mean age = 61.1 years) with bilateral, symmetrical, mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss. Gated Swedish consonants and vowels were presented aurally and audiovisually to participants. Linear amplification was ad

Contrast invariance in the human lateral occipital complex depends on attention.

The human visual system has a remarkable ability to successfully operate under a variety of challenging viewing conditions. For example, our object-recognition capabilities are largely unaffected by low-contrast (e.g., foggy) environments. The basis for this ability appears to be reflected in the neural responses in higher cortical visual areas that have been characterized as being invariant to changes in luminance contrast: neurons in these areas respond nearly equally to low-contrast as compared to high-contrast stimuli. This response pattern is fundamentally different than that observed in

How does the brain navigate knowledge of social relations? Testing for shared neural mechanisms for shifting attention in space and social knowledge.

How does the human brain support reasoning about social relations (e.g., social status, friendships)? Converging theories suggest that navigating knowledge of social relations may co-opt neural circuitry with evolutionarily older functions (e.g., shifting attention in space). Here, we analyzed multivoxel response patterns of fMRI data to examine the neural mechanisms for shifting attention in knowledge of a social hierarchy. The "directions" in which participants mentally navigated social knowledge were encoded in multivoxel patterns in superior parietal cortex, which also encoded directions o

Choice-predictive activity in parietal cortex during source memory decisions.

Neurobiological research has classically focused on perceptual decision-making, although many real-life decisions are based on information that is not currently available but stored in long-term memory. Previous studies have suggested that the lateral parietal cortex encodes decision-related signals during item recognition judgments. In the present fMRI study, we employed a parametric manipulation of evidence for source memory judgments and tested several hypotheses concerning memory decision signals in parietal cortex. As expected, the mean BOLD signal in several parietal regions was modulate

Affective modulation of the associative-limbic subthalamic nucleus: deep brain stimulation in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Affective states underlie daily decision-making and pathological behaviours relevant to obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), mood disorders and addictions. Deep brain stimulation targeting the motor and associative-limbic subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been shown to be effective for Parkinson's disease (PD) and OCD, respectively. Cognitive and electrophysiological studies in PD showed responses of the motor STN to emotional stimuli, impairments in recognition of negative affective states and modulation of the intensity of subjective emotion. Here we studied whether the stimulation of the assoc

Object-in-place Memory Predicted by Anterolateral Entorhinal Cortex and Parahippocampal Cortex Volume in Older Adults.

The lateral portion of the entorhinal cortex is one of the first brain regions affected by tau pathology, an important biomarker for Alzheimer disease. Improving our understanding of this region's cognitive role may help identify better cognitive tests for early detection of Alzheimer disease. Based on its functional connections, we tested the idea that the human anterolateral entorhinal cortex (alERC) may play a role in integrating spatial information into object representations. We recently demonstrated that the volume of the alERC was related to processing the spatial relationships of the f

Altered perception-action binding modulates inhibitory control in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) is a multifaceted neuropsychiatric developmental disorder with onset in childhood or adolescence and frequent remissions in early adulthood. A rather new emerging concept of this syndrome suggests that it is a disorder of purposeful actions, in which sensory processes and their relation to motor responses (actions) play a particularly important role. Thus, this syndrome might be conceived as a condition of altered 'perception-action binding'. In the current study, we test this novel concept in the context of inhibitory control. METHODS: We exam

Heart rate variability during a cognitive reappraisal task in female patients with borderline personality disorder: the role of comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and dissociation.

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation is a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), which often co-occurs with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) have been linked to lower high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), a measure of autonomous nervous system functioning. However, previous research on vagally-mediated heart rate in BPD revealed heterogeneous findings and the effects of comorbid PTSD and dissociation on HF-HRV are not yet completely understood. This study aim to investigate HF-HRV during resting-state and an ER task in female

Cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation over posterior parietal cortex enhances distinct aspects of visual working memory.

In this study, we investigated the effects of tDCS over the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) during a visual working memory (WM) task, which probes different sources of response error underlying the precision of WM recall. In two separate experiments, we demonstrated that tDCS enhanced WM precision when applied bilaterally over the PPC, independent of electrode configuration. In a third experiment, we demonstrated with unilateral electrode configuration over the right PPC, that only cathodal tDCS enhanced WM precision and only when baseline performance was low. Looking at the effects on underly

Reversing the mere exposure effect in spider fearfuls: Preliminary evidence of sensitization.

A mere exposure effect (MEE) is said to occur when individuals' liking of a suboptimally and repeatedly presented stimulus increases compared to never-presented stimuli, while they are unable to indicate which stimuli were previously presented and which were not. In two experiments, we used the MEE to study automatic evaluative processes in highly spider-fearful individuals (SFs). Pictures of spiders and butterflies were repeatedly presented suboptimally to SFs and to non-anxious controls (NACs). In Experiment 1, both groups showed the MEE for butterflies, preferring previously presented butte

Compositionality and the angular gyrus: A multi-voxel similarity analysis of the semantic composition of nouns and verbs.

The cognitive and neural systems that enable conceptual processing must support the ability to combine (and recombine) concepts to form an infinite number of ideas. Two candidate neural systems for conceptual combination-the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the left angular gyrus (AG)-have been characterized as "semantic hubs" due to both functional and anatomical properties; however, these two regions likely support different aspects of composition. Here we consider two hypotheses for the role of AG in conceptual combination, both of which differ from a putative role for the ATL in "feat

Investigation of automatic avoidance in displaced individuals with chronic Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Avoidance of trauma-related stimuli is a key feature of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, avoidance has almost exclusively been investigated with explicit measures targeting more strategic aspects of behavior. The aim of the present study was to examine automatic avoidance in older individuals displaced as children at the end of World War II with (n=22) and without PTSD (n=26) and in non-traumatized control participants (n=23) with an Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT). Participants were instructed to respond to the color (gray, brown) of trauma-related, neutral, and control pictures b

An integrated face-body representation in the fusiform gyrus but not the lateral occipital cortex.

Faces and bodies are processed by distinct category-selective brain areas. Neuroimaging studies have so far presented isolated faces and headless bodies, and therefore little is known on whether and where faces and headless bodies are grouped together to one object, as they appear in the real world. The current study examined whether a face presented above a body are represented as two separate images or as an integrated face-body representation in face and body-selective brain areas by employing a fMRI competition paradigm. This paradigm has been shown to reveal higher fMRI response to sequen

Developmental exposure to concentrated ambient ultrafine particulate matter air pollution in mice results in persistent and sex-dependent behavioral neurotoxicity and glial activation.

The brain appears to be a target of air pollution. This study aimed to further ascertain behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms of our previously observed preference for immediate reward (Allen, J. L., Conrad, K., Oberdorster, G., Johnston, C. J., Sleezer, B., and Cory-Slechta, D. A. (2013). Developmental exposure to concentrated ambient particles and preference for immediate reward in mice. Environ. Altered medial prefrontal activity during dynamic face processing in schizophrenia spectrum patients.

BACKGROUND: Processing the emotional content of faces is recognised as a key deficit of schizophrenia, associated with poorer functional outcomes and possibly contributing to the severity of clinical symptoms such as paranoia. At the neural level, fMRI studies have reported altered limbic activity in response to facial stimuli. However, previous studies may be limited by the use of cognitively demanding tasks and static facial stimuli. To address these issues, the current study used a face processing task involving both passive face viewing and dynamic social stimuli. Such a task may (1) lack

Neurocognitive moderation of associations between cannabis use and psychoneuroticism.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use has been associated with neurocognitive impairments and psychopathology. The strength of such associations does however appear to depend on many different factors, such as duration and intensity of use, but also differential susceptibility due to genetic make-up and environmental influences. The present study investigated whether specific cognitive weaknesses moderated associations between cannabis use and psychoneuroticism, which may be considered one of the "softer" expressions of an extended psychosis phenotype. METHOD: One hundred and fifty (150) young adults (mea

Crossmodal emotional integration in major depression.

Major depression goes along with affective and social-cognitive deficits. Most research on affective deficits in depression has, however, only focused on unimodal emotion processing, whereas in daily life, emotional perception is often highly dependent on the evaluation of multimodal inputs. We thus investigated emotional audiovisual integration in patients with depression and healthy subjects. Subjects rated the expression of happy, neutral and fearful faces while concurrently being exposed to emotional or neutral sounds. Results demonstrated group differences in left inferior frontal gyrus a

The contribution of language to the right-hemisphere conceptual representations: a selective survey.

Although levels of verbal and pictorial performance are known to depend on the degree of left versus right atrophy in the early stages of semantic dementia, the nature of these differences remains controversial. It has been proposed that there is a unitary, bilaterally represented, abstract semantic system and that differential task performance reflects the impact of greater connectivity between the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the left dominant language systems. This interpretation explains the greater involvement of the left ATL in verbally coded semantic knowledge, but not the prev
