The aim of the study was the characterization of Malassezia pachydermatis and its pigment-producing subgroup using biochemical tests and RAPD. It was of interest to determine whether particular RAPD patterns could be used to indicate pigment production, as well as a close genetic relatedness to Malassezia furfur. BACKGROUND: Wong-type dermatomyositis (DM) exhibits simultaneous pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) features.
CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old woman presented with a heliotrope rash, Gottron's papules, and a poikilodermic, erythematous rash in shawl distribution without evidence of muscle weakness. Despite topical corticosteroids, the eruption progressed 9 months later to include generalized hyperkeratotic follicular papules, islands of sparing, and atrophic macules with a collarette of scale suggestive of porokeratosis. Mild dysphonia was the only sign of muscle weakness. Serology showed positive ANA.

To determine subset lineage and malignant vs benign nature, morphologic analysis, immunophenotyping, and flow cytometry have been used. Febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (FUMHD) is a rare inflammatory dermatological disease. A case of a 13-year-old boy with FUMHD possibly triggered by mycoplasma infection is presented. Based on FUMHD cases identified in a MEDLINE literature search, demographic, treatment, and outcome data were analyzed. An FUMHD mortality risk score is proposed based on the likelihood ratios of risk factors for a fatal outcome. Our FUMHD case had marked leukopenia and thrombocytopenia at admission.
