INTRODUCTION: Chronic mental health problems often emerge in young adulthood, when adults begin to develop lifelong health behaviors and access preventive health services. The associations between mental health problems and modifiable cancer risk factors in young adulthood are not well understood.
METHODS: In 2016, the authors analyzed 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data on demographic characteristics, health service access and use, health status, and cancer risk factors (tobacco use, alcohol use, overweight or obesity, physical activity, and sleep) for 90,821 young adults ag

UNLABELLED: This study compared anxiety, fears, depression and behavioural problems as occurring in children with congenital heart disease, comparing them with samples of normal children. It further considered the influence of maternal anxiety, as well as analyzing a subgroup of children with cyanotic forms of congenital heart disease to determine if they were at higher risk than acyanotic children for the problems identified.
METHOD: We recruited 40 consecutive children with congenital heart disease without obvious psychosocial problems from the Cardiology clinic at the Alberta Children's Ho

Legius syndrome is a RAS-MAPK syndrome characterized by pigmentary findings similar to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), but without tumor complications. Learning difficulties and behavioral problems have been reported to be associated with Legius syndrome, but have not been studied systematically. We investigated intelligence and behavior in 15 patients with Legius syndrome and 7 unaffected family members. We report a mean full-scale IQ of 101.57 in patients with Legius syndrome, which does not differ from the control group. We find a significantly lower Performance IQ in children with Legius s

Childhood opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a movement disorder which typically strikes children in the early preschool years, seriously affecting intellectual, social-emotional and general adaptive development. This series of 13 cases with well-documented neurological histories, aged 1.7 to 16.3 years, provides an initial systematic evaluation of these children's neuropsychological, psychosocial and adaptive status. As expected, children with OMS had significantly reduced intelligence and severe speech and motor output problems; however, most of them also demonstrated a range of preserve

In this paper, the problem of correct ascriptions of consciousness to patients in neurological intensive care medicine is explored as a special case of the general philosophical 'other minds problem'. It is argued that although clinical ascriptions of consciousness and coma are mostly based on behavioral evidence, a behaviorist epistemology of other minds is not likely to succeed. To illustrate this, the so-called 'total locked-in syndrome', in which preserved consciousness is combined with a total loss of motor abilities due to a lower ventral brain stem lesion, is presented as a touchstone f

The current pilot study assessed the prevalence of at-risk/problem gambling using the Brief Biosocial Gambling Screen (BBGS) among a sample of U.S. military veterans seeking mental health treatment services in a primary care medical setting at a Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in the Northeast. Out of the 260 veterans screened, 85 veterans (32.7%) reported gambling behaviors within the past 12 months. No significant differences were found between gambling and non-gambling veterans on demographics, medical, or mental health conditions collected in the study. Among veteran past-year gamblers, fiv

OBJECTIVE: We examined the relationships between polygenic risk scores (PRS) for psychiatric disorders and behavioral and emotional problems. In addition, we explored whether these associations differed by sex and conducted mutually adjusted models to elucidate whether different PRS independently contributed to the same outcome.
METHOD: Participants included 4,709 individuals 5 to 18 years of age from the Spanish population-based INSchool cohort (mean age = 10.0 years; SD = 3.0, 45% female). PRS for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disor

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with single ventricle congenital heart disease and Fontan circulation are at high risk for mental health problems. There is a lack of information about potential care models to address these common challenges. This study describes the innovative integration of psychology consultations into a multidisciplinary clinic for pediatric patients with Fontan circulation. Findings from emotional/behavioral and quality-of-life measures are reported and relationships between these variables are explored.
METHOD: The Fontan Rehabilitation, Wellness and Resilience Development (FO

Breastfed infants are particularly vulnerable to iron deficiency, which is associated with impaired neurodevelopment. Iron supplementation reduces behavioral problems in certain risk groups, but effects in healthy infants are uncertain. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated whether daily low-dose iron supplementation (7, 10, or 15 mg micronized microencapsulated ferric pyrophosphate, approximating 1 mg/kg, from 4 to 9 months of age) affects behavioral outcomes at 3 years. The study was conducted in Warsaw, Poland and Umeå, Sweden and included full-term, healthy, pre

Veterinarians are well placed to supervise and ensure canine welfare. However, the perception of animal welfare among veterinarians may vary depending on the level of training and professional practice, including the specialization in animal behavior and welfare. The aim of this study was to survey the perception of canine welfare among veterinarians, including students, practitioners, and behavior specialists. A scale-based questionnaire including 12 issues affecting canine welfare was adapted from Yeates and Main and distributed to first-year (n=50) and fifth-year veterinary students (n=50),

Both genetic and socio-demographic factors influence the risk for behavioral problems in the developmental age. Genetic studies indicate that shared genetic factors partially contribute to behavioral and learning problems, in particular reading disabilities (RD). For the first time, we explore the conjoint role of DCDC2 gene, an identified RD candidate gene, and socioeconomic status (SES) upon behavioral phenotypes in a general population of Italian children. Two of the most replicated DCDC2 markers [i.e., regulatory element associated with dyslexia 1 (READ1), rs793862] were genotyped in 631 c

This study examined the relation between internalizing and externalizing symptoms in two groups of prepubertal boys (with and without multiple chronic tic disorder) with diagnosed attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Parents and teachers completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Teacher's Report Form (TRF), respectively. Children were carefully evaluated for the absence of a chronic tic disorder. Boys with ADHD and chronic multiple tic disorder (ADHD/+tics) received significantly higher (p = .0032, Bonferroni correction) scores for the Anxious/Depressed, Thought Problems, a

Firstborn children's reactions to mother-infant and father-infant interaction after a sibling's birth were examined in an investigation of 224 families. Triadic observations of parent-infant-sibling interaction were conducted at 1 month after the birth. Parents reported on children's problem behaviors at 1 and 4 months after the birth and completed the Attachment Q-sort before the birth. Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified 4 latent classes (behavioral profiles) for mother-infant and father-infant interactions: regulated-exploration, disruptive-dysregulated, approach-avoidant, and anxious-…

Domestic violence is a universal problem, and sexual violence in marriage, in particular, is a hidden form of it. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted to determine to the prevalence of domestic sexual violence by husbands, the prevalence of sexual problems, and the relation of these among married women attending a gynecology outpatient clinic. This study was performed in a university hospital in Turkey and data were collected February-April 2009. The study sample consisted of 200 married women, 53% of whom reported having been exposed to at least one type of domestic sexual vi

Studies suggest that refusal self-efficacy and protective behavioral strategies may influence how impulsivity relates to addictive behaviors. However, their mediating and moderating roles have not yet been examined in the context of gambling. This study investigated whether gambling refusal self-efficacy (GRSE) and gambling protective behavioral strategies (GPBS) mediate or moderate the associations between impulsivity and gambling outcomes, including problem gambling (PG) and gambling involvement. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 926 gamblers from the general population (fe

Recent work suggests that common knowledge is an important cognitive mechanism for coordinating prosocial behavior, in part because it reduces uncertainty about others' cooperative behavior. However, it remains unclear whether children also rely on common knowledge to solve coordination problems. Here we examined whether 6- to 9-year-old children (N = 133) from the United States were more likely to attempt to coordinate when they had common knowledge about a joint payoff. Participants saw 3 vignettes that modeled the structure of a 2-player coordination problem and were provided with common kn

PURPOSE: We investigated behavioral problems, attention problems, and cognitive function in children and adolescents born small for gestational age (SGA).
METHODS: Forty-six SGA children born at term and 46 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) children born at term were compared. Psychiatric symptoms were examined with reference to the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist, Korean-Youth Self Report, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale (ADHD-RS). Cognitive function was estimated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. Sociodemographic data were recorded from interviews.

The psychotherapeutic treatment of personality disorders in patients with childhood traumatization is still a major challenge. The broad range of clinical problems includes disturbed emotion regulation, reduced mentalization function, impaired integration of personality, maladaptive patterns of behavior and a high degree of comorbidity. A variety of treatment concepts of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and other origin have been developed to treat this patient population. The aim of this paper is to identifiy those concepts whose effectiveness has been sufficienty demonstrated by controll

OBJECTIVE: To test the convergence between the empirical-quantitative approach of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the clinical-diagnostic approach of the DSM.
METHOD: The parent version of the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC), version 2.3, was administered after completion of the CBCL for 231 children and adolescents consecutively referred to an outpatient mental health clinic.
RESULTS: Of the subjects with a DSM-III-R diagnosis, 60% scored in the clinical range of the CBCL total problem score. The Withdrawn scale predicted affective and anxiety disorders. The S

INTRODUCTION: Risky sexual behavior has been explored in women living with HIV (WLHIV) internationally but is not well studied in WLHIV in the United States (U.S.). This merits further investigation due to the negative reproductive and HIV health outcomes associated with risky sexual behavior, such as the increased risk for HIV transmission and infertility from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The aims of this study are to (1) describe sexual behaviors in a cohort of WLHIV in Florida, (2) determine whether demographic characteristics, substance use, and mental health symptoms are associ
