Artificial intelligence for assessment of Stargardt macular atrophy.

Stargardt disease (also known as juvenile macular degeneration or Stargardt macular degeneration) is an inherited disorder of the retina, which can occur in the eyes of children and young adults. It is the most prevalent form of juvenile-onset macular dystrophy, causing progressive (and often severe) vision loss. Images with Stargardt disease are characterized by the appearance of flecks in early and intermediate stages, and the appearance of atrophy, due to cells wasting away and dying, in the advanced stage. The primary measure of late-stage Stargardt disease is the appearance of atrophy. Fu

Ocular findings in pediatric turner syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Turner syndrome (TS) is associated with abnormalities across several organ systems, including the visual system. There is a relative paucity of literature describing ophthalmic manifestations of TS. We sought to investigate eye manifestations in our cross-sectional population of pediatric TS patients. METHODS: All patients managed by the TS program of a tertiary children's hospital were identified. Patients with documentation of at least one eye exam were included for analysis. Chart review was retrospectively performed to identify all documented ocular abnormalities as well as pat

Burden of disease, treatment utilization, and the impact on education and employment in patients with sickle cell disease: A comparative analysis of high- and low- to middle-income countries for the international Sickle Cell World Assessment Survey.

The international Sickle Cell World Assessment Survey (SWAY) reported a high impact of sickle cell disease (SCD) on patients' daily lives globally. In this study, we analyzed whether the reported burden differed between patients from the USA (n = 384) and other high-income (HI; n = 820) or low- to middle-income (LMI; n = 941) countries. We assessed symptoms and complications, incidence/management of vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs), treatment utilization/satisfaction, and the impact of SCD on education/employment. Certain symptoms (bone aches, insomnia, and joint stiffness) and complications (swol

Utility of Point-of-Care Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension in the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Emergency physicians are frequently required to identify and triage patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a possible cause that must be considered. Its prognosis depends on prompt recognition and treatment, and progression of the disease can lead to permanent vision loss and considerable morbidity. Point-of-care ultrasound can rapidly identify elevated ICP. Measurements of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and optic disc elevation (ODE) can act as surrogates for ICP. CASE SERIES: We describe five cases in which ultr

Possible coexistence of MOG-IgG-associated disease and anti-Caspr2 antibody-associated autoimmune encephalitis: a first case report.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease has been proposed as a separate inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) since the discovery of pathogenic antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-IgG). Antibodies targeting contactin-associated protein-like 2 (Caspr2), a component of voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) complex, have been documented to be associated with a novel autoimmune synaptic encephalitis with a low incidence. Herein, we reported an adult female with initial presentation of decreased vision in the right ey

[Effectiveness of the system for predicting the risk of developing an acute angle closure glaucoma attack].

UNLABELLED: One of the most severe urgent conditions of the eye capable of leading to untreatable blindness is an acute attack of glaucoma. This condition is an acute decompensation of eye hydrodynamics, which develops with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Detectability of PACG is only high at the sudden development of an acute attack, which can cause a sharp decrease or even irreversible loss of vision. PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of predicting the development of PACG in eyes with short anterior-posterior axis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 69 patients (90 eyes) ag

Advanced glaucoma at diagnosis: current perspectives.

Presentation with advanced glaucoma is a significant risk factor for lifetime blindness. The asymptomatic nature of glaucoma, particularly in early disease, means that substantial vision loss in one eye does not always translate into a perceptible loss of visual function. This, along with the lack of an effective screening strategy, contributes to late presentation. Those most at risk of presenting with advanced glaucoma have asymptomatic high intraocular pressure (IOP), no family history of glaucoma, are socially disadvantaged, and do not attend sight testing. Patients with glaucoma may have

Multiple Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries Lead to Visual Dysfunction in a Mouse Model.

Visual dysfunction is a common occurrence after traumatic brain injury (TBI). We investigated in this study effects of single or multiple mild TBI on visual function in mice using a closed head injury model that permits unconstrained head movement after impact. Adult mice were briefly anesthetized with isoflurane and given one or three mild TBI with the closed head injury by mechanically engineered rotational acceleration (CHIMERA) device with an interinjury interval of 24 h. Mice were then tested in the Morris water maze, visual cliff, and open field tests from day 19 to day 32 and for visual
