Spina bifida aperta (SBA) is an open neural tube defect that occurs during the embryonic period. We created SBA chicks by incising the roof plate of the neural tube in the embryo. The area of the dorsal funiculus was smaller in the SBA chicks than in the normal controls. Additionally, the SBA group had fewer nerve fibres in the dorsal funiculus than the normal controls. The early visual system processes different spatial frequencies (SFs) separately. To examine where in the brain the scale-specific information is integrated, we mapped the neural assemblies engaged in interhemispheric coupling with electroencephalographic (EEG) coherence and blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal. Responses of upper cervical inspiratory neurons (UCINs) to abdominal visceral or cardiopulmonary sympathetic stimulation were studied using extracellular recordings from 213 UCINs in 54 pentobarbital sodium-anesthetized and paralyzed rats.
