Coccidioides immitis infections of bones and joints pose difficult problems in diagnosis and treatment. To evaluate further the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, a retrospective review was conducted of 24 patients with 44 separate skeletal lesions of C. immitis infection, as determined by positive culture. Patients treated with combined medical and surgical treatment are more likely to have a successful outcome than those treated with medical therapy alone (p less than 0.005). The function of peritoneal macrophages from Rickettsia prowazeki-infected guinea pigs at various intervals of postinfection immunity was studied. The heterogeneity of mitochrondrial autoantibodies in a variety of diseases states has been critically re-examined by a combination of immunofluorescence staining (IFL) and complement fixation tests (CFT). Three men native from Northern Africa, aged more than 40 years, but by their profession in France with narrow contacts to rats, present clinical signs of typhus. Serology (FCT and FAT) gives positive results with R. prowazeki and R. typhi which have a strait antigenic community. Following assays of absorption of the sera by the two antigens and light differences of titers we conclude that two cases are Brill-Zinsser illnesses, but one is really an autochtone case of murin typhus. The last affirmation is confirmed by the detection of specific IgM-antibodies.

Evidence of chronic Coxiella burneti infection of the heart, a disease previously considered peculiar to patients with valvular heart-disease, was found in a patient during routine serological tests before resection of a ventricular aneurysm and also by isolation of the rickettsia from the resected tissue. The patient had no symptoms or signs of Q-fever endocarditis and none of the laboratory evidence usually associated with it.

Yersinia infections in 16 adults and 9 children are reported. 15 cases were caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, 8 of them were proved by serological findings. In 4 cases the infection by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis was likely, in 3 other cases possible only. Real infections caused by serotype IV are demonstrated too. A comparative study of the sensitivities of the immunofluorescence (IF) and immunoperoxydase (IPo) techniques was undertaken. ‘Q’ fever is an acute febrile illness seen mainly among members of the farming community. The infection is contracted from sheep and cows mainly by inhalation of infected dust, but can be spread by raw milk.
