INTRODUCTION: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a chronic bilateral severe form of allergic conjunctivitis which affects normal activities in school/work. It is a severe form of allergies in warm and dry tropical and sub-tropical countries. Its prevalence in Ethiopia ranges from 5.2% to7.3%. Most studies are institution based and do not address specific factors associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. There is no a study that shows the magnitude of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in the study area.

PURPOSE: Grading of disease activity in patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) is limited by intra- and inter-observer variability. The aim of this study was to identify angiographic parameters to help evaluate inflammation and disease activity.
METHODS: In 12 patients (4 with active, 2 with inactive AKC, and 6 controls), disease activity were assessed using a validated biomicroscopic grading scale. Imaging of upper tarsal conjunctiva was undertaken using color photography, fluorescein (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of topical cyclosporin A 0.05% in the treatment of patients with severe, steroid-resistant atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC).
DESIGN: Multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-masked, randomized trial.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two patients with AKC refractory to topical steroid treatment.

Fifteen patients discontinued use of extended-wear hydrogel contact lenses. The primary cause was neovascularization (60%), although lens soilage, giant papillary conjunctivitis and ulceration were factors in several patients each.
