Prevalence of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Two Species of Peromyscus Mice Common in Northern Wisconsin.

Two species of mice, the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque; Rodentia: Cricetidae) and the woodland deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner; Rodentia: Cricetidae), serve as reservoirs of tick-borne pathogens in many parts of North America. However, the role P. maniculatus plays in the amplification and maintenance of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Rickettsiales: Ehrlichiaceae) and Borrelia burgdorferi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) is not well understood. In northern Wisconsin, from 2012 to 2014, 560 unique mice were captured at 83 sites distributed across five forests. P. l…

Molecular identification of cryptic cysticercosis: Taenia ovis krabbei in wild intermediate and domestic definitive hosts.

The complex life cycle of taeniids represents an ideal model of a multi-host system. The complexity of these parasites can therefore cover the epidemiological issues of the interface between wild and domestic animals, especially once spatial overlap between wild and domestic definitive and intermediate hosts occurs. Here we use the occurrence of Taenia ovis krabbei in two model areas as an example of this epidemiological complexity. In two contiguous areas in the Italian northern Apennines, two hunted roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) showed numerous cysticerci in the muscles of their whole body …

Investigation of intra-herd spread of Mycobacterium caprae in cattle by generation and use of a whole-genome sequence.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) calculated from whole genome sequencing (WGS) are ideally suited to study evolutionary relationships of pathogens and their epidemiology. Mycobacterium caprae infections have been documented frequently in cattle and red deer along the Bavarian and Austrian Alps during the last decade. However, little is still known about the transmission within cattle holdings and possible alterations of the genomes of M. caprae during such events. The aim of this study was to study the molecular epidemiology of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in selected herds based on isolate…

Development of an Interspecies Nested Dose-Response Model for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis.

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) causes chronic inflammation of the intestines in humans, ruminants, and other species. … h parameters α = 0.0978 and N50 = 2.70 × 10(2) CFU. These data sets were derived from sheep and red deer host species, indicating successful interspecies nesting, and demonstrate the highly infective nature of MAP. The nested dose-response model described should be used for future QMRA research regarding oral exposure to MAP.

RABVs have been isolated or detected in the bat, Chinese ferret badger, raccoon dog, Apodemus, deer, and vole. Among them, the bat, Chinese ferret badger, and raccoon dog may play a role in the ecology of lyssaviruses in mainland China. Extended safety and efficacy studies of the attenuated Brucella vaccine candidates 16 M(Delta)vjbR and S19(Delta)vjbR in the immunocompromised IRF-1-/- mouse model.

The global distribution of brucellosis and high incidence in certain areas of the world warrant the development of a safer and efficacious vaccine. For the past 10 years, we have focused our attention on the development of a safer, but still highly protective, live attenuated vaccine for human and animal use. We have demonstrated the safety and protective efficacy of the vaccine candidates 16 MΔvjbR and S19ΔvjbR against homologous and heterologous challenge in multiple immunocompetent animal models, including mice and deer. In the present study, we conducted a series of experiments to determin…

Tracing the origin of 'blue Weimaraner' dogs by molecular genetics.

Weimaraner dogs are defined by light brown coat colour termed grey including several shadings ranging from silver and deer to mouse grey. In contrast, the so-called blue Weimaraners (BW) with lightened black-pigmented coat have been proposed to represent spontaneous revertants in the Weimaraner breed. In order to investigate the genetic determinants of the characteristic grey coat colour versus those of BW, known variation in coat colour genes including TYRP1 and MLPH were analysed in a number of grey and blue dogs. Variations at the B locus cause grey coat colour in Weimaraners via two non-fu…

Altitudinal patterns of tick and host abundance: a potential role for climate change in regulating tick-borne diseases?

Tick abundance was positively associated with deer abundance, but even after taking this into account, there was a strong negative association of ticks with altitude. Increased protection against bovine tuberculosis in the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) when BCG is administered with killed Mycobacterium vaccae.

SETTING: The Australian brushtail possum is the major wildlife reservoir for Mycobacterium bovis infection in New Zealand. Development of an effective tuberculosis vaccine for possums will reduce the spread of infection to cattle and farmed deer. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether killed M. vaccae can improve the efficacy of vaccination with M. bovis bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) against bovine tuberculosis in the possum. DESIGN: Groups of possums (n=6-8) were vaccinated via intranasal and intraconjunctival routes with BCG alone or BCG in combination with heat-killed M. vaccae. Controls were …

Detection, characterization, and prediction of tick-borne disease foci.

Adaptation of ruminants to browse and grass diets: are anatomical-based browser-grazer interpretations valid?

As a result of pioneering work of Hofmann (1973, 1989), nutritional ecologists classify ruminants into three feeding-type categories: browse … small, grazer-sized salivary glands. Resting (non-feeding or ruminating) saliva flow rates of mule deer (browser) and domestic sheep and cattle (grazers) were not significantly different from each other. Finally, ruminal liquid flow rates were not different between feeding types. We conclude that many of Hofmann's nutritional and physiological interpr …

Differential distribution of immature Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae) on rodent hosts.

Ectoparasites such as ixodid ticks that remain attached to hosts for several days while feeding on blood are able to overcome the inflammatory and immune responses of some hosts and not others. The immature stages of the deer tick Ixodes dammini are found more frequently on the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, than on other rodents. We propose that P. leucopus is more tolerant to I. dammini than is a less common host, the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. To test this hypothesis, the distribution patterns and engorgement indices were determined for larval and nymphal I. dammini col…

Orthopaedic complications of Lyme disease in children.

Lyme disease is transmitted by the tick Ixodes dammini ("deer tick") or a related ixodid tick. Early diagnosis of children with Lyme disease is difficult because the bite of the ixodid tick often goes unnoticed. Furthermore, erythema chronicum migrans, the characteristic rash of the disease, occurs in less than 50% of cases. However, an awareness of orthopaedic complications of Lyme disease may facilitate an early diagnosis of this disease. Orthopaedic complications of Lyme disease include those which are oligoarticular in nature. Brief intermittent attacks of swelling and pain in one or more …

Use of deep learning to predict chronic wasting disease status based on animal movement.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is an invariably fatal prion disease that impacts cervid populations and wildlife management across North America. Infected cervids often remain asymptomatic for months and movement-based anomaly detection from Global Positioning System collaring data offers a potential tool for understanding early and late stage CWD-based behavioral changes. Here we evaluate whether deep learning behavioral anomaly detection models such as autoencoders (AE) and conditional autoencoders (cAE) can effectively identify anomalous movement changes in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus…
