The significance of nanofiber polyglycolic acid for promoting tissue repair in a rat subcutaneous implantation model.

Among various biomaterials, we focused on nanofiber-based polyglycolic acid (PGA) fabric and examined the dynamics of cells that migrate within the non-woven fabric after implantation. The efficacy of nano-PGA as a tissue reinforcement in the process of subcutaneous tissue repair was immunohistochemically investigated. Two types of clinically available PGA non-woven sheet (nano-PGA: fiber diameter = 2.0 μm, conventional PGA: fiber diameter = 14.2 μm) were used and subcutaneously implanted in rats. Samples were collected 3 days, and 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after the implantation to perform histolo

Case Report: Successful DSA-guided removal of a fractured PICC catheter from the pulmonary artery in a patient with lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are widely used for long-term intravenous therapy, especially in cancer patients. Although generally safe, PICC-related complications such as catheter fracture and migration can pose serious risks. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 41-year-old female with lung adenocarcinoma who developed PICC catheter fracture, with the broken segment migrating into the pulmonary artery during chemotherapy. The patient presented without significant symptoms, and imaging confirmed the intravascular migration of the catheter fragment. After mul

Case Report: Strangulated intestinal obstruction due to chronic migration of an intrauterine device (IUD): a 30-year latent complication.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are widely used but carry rare risks of migration and subsequent complications, such as bowel obstruction. This case highlights the life-threatening potential of chronic IUD migration decades after insertion, emphasizing the need for heightened clinical vigilance and long-term surveillance. A 57-year-old female patient presented to the hospital with a 2-day history of abdominal pain, accompanied by the cessation of flatus and defecation. She had one pregnancy and one vaginal delivery 31 years ago, followed by the insertion of a ring-shaped IUD 1 year postpartum. How

Proximal trimming and retrograde tunneling for neonatal central venous access: An atypical over the wire approach from a single center experience.

Tunneled central venous access devices (T-CVADs) are used in selected neonatal cases, and their placement often requires a peel-away introducer. In premature infants and neonates, when the introducer is significantly larger than the catheter, the procedure may be technically challenging because of the small size and fragility of the veins. This study describes a modified technique for T-CVAD placement in neonates weighing less than 5 kg. The proposed approach combines a Seldinger over-the-wire insertion with retrograde tunneling and proximal trimming, with the aim of avoiding the use of a peel

Loop anchor tension band wiring for olecranon fractures reduces Kirschner wire migration rate: a retrospective comparative study.

The loop anchor tension band wiring (TBW) technique is employed for olecranon fractures and aims to reduce the Kirschner wire (K-wire) migration rate. This study compared the postoperative outcomes and complication rates of olecranon fractures treated with Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO)-modified TBW versus the loop anchor TBW. This study enrolled 83 olecranon fractures treated with AO-modified TBW (n = 62) or loop anchor TBW (n = 21). K-wire migration, implant removal, time to fracture union, operation time, and subjective functional outcomes including the Mayo Elbow Performa

Lactescent urine following pediatric cardiac surgery due to catheter migration.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheterization is crucial for the perioperative and postoperative management of neonatal cardiac surgery patients. The procedure can be challenging due to the small size of the vessels, and it carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality. The most common sites for catheter insertion are the jugular or femoral veins; however, jugular access is typically avoided in patients with univentricular heart disease. The most frequent complications associated with central venous catheters are thromboembolic events and infections. Here, we present a case of lactescent urine i

Radiostereometric measurement of implant migration in robotically assisted vs conventional bi-cruciate stabilized cemented total knee arthroplasty: secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Robotically assisted computer navigation (robotic) has been developed to improve the positioning in total knee arthroplasties (TKAs), attempting to achieve better functional results and longevity of the prostheses. However, the benefit of robotics is still controversial. The aim of our study was to compare migration between robotic and conventional techniques in cemented bi-cruciate stabilized TKAs, using radiostereometric analysis (RSA) based on a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT). METHODS: We enrolled 60 TKA patients from one hospital (2020-20

Transcatheter removal of a briefly penetrated inferior vena cava filter in an open abdomen: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The likelihood of inferior vena cava filter penetration increases with prolonged implantation. Despite the generally low risk associated with an ALN inferior vena cava filter (ALN IMPLANTS CHIRURGICAUX, Ghisonaccia, France), we present a case in which penetration occurred 43 days after implantation. At present, no consensus is available on the standardized approach for filter removal in such cases. In this report, we describe a secure and reliable method involving surgical access to the abdomen and transcatheter filter removal while directly observing the inferior vena cava. CASE

Retrieval of a left appendage device from the left ventricle using a large bore steerable catheter.

Left atrium appendage closure is a safe and effective therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation and high thromboembolic and hemorrhagic risks. Prosthesis embolization is a potential major complication with an incidence of 0.07%. We report a case of migration of an Amplatzer Amulet (Abbott) device that was successfully retrieved in an innovative way (4).

Nexplanonectomy-the surgical removal of an embolized implanted contraceptive device: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Nexplanon implants are a common hormonal contraceptive modality. Though rare, these devices can embolize into the injured wall of the basilic vein, through the right heart, and finally wedge itself into a pulmonary artery. With adherence to the arterial wall over time, it becomes less amenable to endovascular retrieval. Patients may present with symptoms mimicking a pulmonary embolism, or without any symptoms at all. In asymptomatic cases, endovascular retrieval and/or surgery is required when patients wish to begin having children prior to biological inactivity. The current litera

Evaluating no fixation, endoscopic suture fixation, and an over-the-scope clip for anchoring fully covered self-expandable metal stents in benign upper GI conditions: a comparative multicenter international study (with video).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fully covered self-expandable metal stents (FCSEMSs) are widely used in benign upper GI conditions, but stent migration remains a limitation. An over-the-scope clip (OTSC) device (Stentfix {SF], Ovesco Endoscopy) for stent anchoring has recently been developed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of OTSC fixation on FCSEMS migration rate. METHODS: In this retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent FCSEMS placement for benign upper GI conditions from January 2011 to October 2022 at 16 centers, the primary outcome was rate of stent migration. Device dislodgement and embolization associated with a new leadless pacemaker.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, there are two approved single chamber leadless pacemakers (LP) in the United States (US), Micra VR™; approved since 2016 and AVEIR VR™; approved in 2022. A potential complication of LPs is dislodgement and/or embolization (D/E) during or after implant. According to the IDE trials, there appears to be a significant difference in D/E rates between the two LPs that have different fixation mechanisms; Micra uses nitinol tines, while AVEIR uses an active screw helix. The aim of this study was to determine if the AVEIR VR LP has continued to exhibit D/E in the United States

Retroperitoneal Laparoscopic-Assisted Retrieval of Wall-Penetrating Inferior Vena Cava Filter After Endovascular Techniques Failed: An Initial Clinical Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are commonly used in China to prevent pulmonary embolisms in patients with deep vein thrombosis. However, IVC filter removal is complicated when the filter has penetrated the IVC wall and endovascular techniques usually fail. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of retroperitoneal laparoscopic-assisted retrieval of wall-penetrating IVC filters after endovascular techniques have failed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated a series of 8 patients who underwent retroperitoneal laparoscopic-assisted retri

Incidence of thrombotic events and complications associated to inferior vena cava filters in patients with and without anticoagulation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Anticoagulation is the primary management to prevent venous thromboembolism; inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) provide a mechanical prophylactic alternative when anticoagulation is contraindicated. The aim of this study was to evaluate in IVCF patients, whether the initiation of anticoagulation therapy is associated with decreased rates of recurrent thrombotic events and device-related complications. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients that underwent insertion of IVCF. Subjects with IVCF were studied in two groups: those initiated on anticoagulation (A) and withou

Trans-mediastinal Kirschner wire migration treated by video-assisted thoracoscopy.

The use of osteosynthesis material in shoulder and clavicle surgery is common in orthopedic surgery. Although migration is rare, it is widely documented and can lead to serious complications and even death. We present a rare case of trans-mediastinal migration of a Kirschner needle used to fix a clavicle fracture, which fortunately did not injure the mediastinal structures and was resolved favorably by a video-assisted thoracic surgery approach.
