Adult Presentation of Dyke-Davidoff-Masson Syndrome, a Radiological Enigma: A Case Report.

Introduction and Importance: Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by focal or generalized drug-resistant epilepsy, hemiparesis, face or body asymmetry with atrophy, and cognitive impairment in early childhood and adulthood. DDMS is generally diagnosed in the paediatric age group. Neuroimaging shows skull bone thickening with cerebral hemiatrophy and hyperpneumatization of sinuses. Case Presentation: Here is a case of a middle-aged female presenting with a history of multiple episodes of seizure since childhood. MRI showed diffuse atrophy of the le

Invasive bony destructive orbital aspergillosis in an immunocompetent child: a case report.

PURPOSE: To report a case of invasive sino-orbital aspergillosis, a rare condition in a healthy child. The patient presented with orbital involvement and bone destruction, an exceedingly uncommon occurrence that mimics other invasive inflammatory or neoplastic orbital lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old female presented with an ill-defined, irregular, erythematous mass-like lesion measuring 8 × 10 mm on the left upper eyelid. Orbital computed tomography (CT) revealed an infiltrative soft tissue mass with bone erosions and destruction on the medial side of the frontal bone, extending towa

"Chronic granulomatous invasive fungal rhinosinusitis associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection: A case report".

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Granulomatous chronic invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (GCIFR) is a rare entity with scarce cases reported mainly in subtropical areas. Its prevalence among individuals with clinical suspicion of fungal rhinosinusitis has been reported in approximately 20% in subtropical populations, unlike North America with a prevalence of 0.5%. It is typically associated with Aspergillus flavus and the presence of noncaseating granulomas or Langerhans giant cells on histopathologic examination. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a patient with clinical history of recent SAR

Usefulness of computed tomography in predicting ethmoidal arterial bleeding in refractory epistaxis.

PURPOSE: Epistaxis that is refractory to conservative management can be treated with endoscopic sphenopalatine artery ligation (ESPAL). Although rare, ethmoidal artery (EA) bleeding can be a cause of rebleeding after successful ESPAL. EA bleeding is diagnosed by angiography and can also be identified during surgical exploration. However, since the angiographic embolization of the EA is contraindicated, surgical hemostasis is mandatory. This study investigated whether paranasal sinus (PNS) CT could provide information for predicting EA bleeding without angiography in patients with refractory ep

Sinus Development and Pneumatization in a Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetically diverse disease which causes impaired mucociliary clearance, and results in pulmonary, otologic, and rhinologic disease in affected patients. Genetic mutations in multiple genes impair the ability of patients to clear mucous from the lungs, middle ear, and sinonasal cavity and lead to chronic pulmonary and sinonasal symptoms. METHODS: We identified 17 PCD patients who had available CT scans. Volumes for bilateral maxillary, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses were calculated. A control population of patients who had preoperative CT scans

Invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral aspergillosis in an immunocompetent patient.

INTRODUCTION: Rhino-orbital-aspergillosis (ROA) is a rare but serious disease in immunocompetent patients. Diagnosis is often delayed due to the absence of specific clinical symptoms. We describe the case of a patient who presented initially with ROA which spread progressively to the right ethmoid-sphenoid sinuses and then to the brain. OBSERVATION: A 61-year-old patient with a history of well-controlled diabetes presented with a sudden severe decrease in right visual acuity. Cerebral MRI showed the presence of an infiltrate in the right orbital apex extending to the homolateral cavernous sin

Incidence and Radiological Findings of Incidental Sinus Opacifications in Patients Undergoing Septoplasty or Septorhinoplasty.

OBJECTIVES: Although the routine use of computed tomography (CT) is controversial, it is employed in the preoperative screening of patients undergoing septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and radiological characteristics of incidentally found sinus pathologies on screening CT in patients who underwent elective septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the patients who underwent septoplasty and septorhinoplasty performed by a single surgeon (Y.J.J.) at Asan Medical Center between January 2016 and December 2017. Development and validation of a 3D-printed model of the ostiomeatal complex and frontal sinus for endoscopic sinus surgery training.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sinus surgery poses unique training challenges due to complex and variable anatomy, and the risk of major complications. We sought to create and provide validity evidence for a novel 3D-printed simulator of the nose and paranasal sinuses. METHODS: Sinonasal computed tomography (CT) images of a patient were imported into 3D visualization software. Segmentation of bony and soft tissue structures was then performed. The model was printed using simulated bone and soft tissue materials. Rhinologists and otolaryngology residents completed 6 prespecified tasks including maxill

Effect of reduced z-axis scan coverage on diagnostic performance and radiation dose of neck computed tomography in patients with suspected cervical abscess.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of reduced z-axis scan coverage on diagnostic performance and radiation dose of neck CT in patients with suspected cervical abscess. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with suspected cervical abscess were included and underwent contrast-enhanced neck CT on a 2nd or 3rd generation dual-source CT system. Image acquisition ranged from the aortic arch to the upper roof of the frontal sinuses (CTstd). Subsequently, series with reduced z-axis coverage (CTred) were reconstructed starting at the aortic arch up to the orbital floor. CTstd and CTred were independently assessed

Management of spindle cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcomas, also known as spindle cell carcinomas, are rare and highly aggressive tumors characterized by dual histologic differentiation of squamous cell and mesenchymal cell tumors. Occurrence of carcinosarcoma in maxillary sinus is very rare, with only 11 cases reported since 1957. The small number of reported cases creates an obstacle to the increased understanding of the behavior, prognosis, and therapeutic management of this tumor. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of right nasal obstruction. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance

Computed tomographic features of feline sino-nasal and sino-orbital aspergillosis.

Feline upper respiratory tract aspergillosis (URTA) occurs as two distinct anatomical forms, namely, sino-nasal aspergillosis (SNA) and sino-orbital aspergillosis (SOA). An emerging pathogen, Aspergillus felis, is frequently involved. The pathogenesis of URTA, in particular the relationship between the infecting isolate and outcome, is poorly understood. In this study, computed tomography was used to investigate the route of fungal infection and extension in 16 cases (SNA n = 7, SOA n = 9) where the infecting isolate had been identified by molecular testing. All cases had nasal cavity involvem

Spectrum of critical imaging findings in complex facial skeletal trauma.

Multidetector computed tomography (CT) is the modality of choice for the evaluation of facial trauma because it helps accurately identify and characterize fractures and associated complications, thereby aiding timely clinical management and surgical planning. In particular, CT clearly depicts clinically relevant fractures in the eight osseous struts or buttresses that function as an underlying scaffold for facial structures. Information about the involvement of specific facial buttresses in a complex fracture is helpful for determining the type of fracture present and for identifying associate

Sheep oestrosis (Oestrus ovis Linné 1761, Diptera: Oestridae) in Sardinia, Italy.

Oestrosis, the nasal myiasis of sheep and goats, is caused by the larvae of Oestrus ovis L. 1758 (Diptera, Oestridae) that develop from the first to the third stage larva in the nasal cavities and frontal sinuses of affected animals. The authors report the results of an epidemiological study of oestrosis of sheep in Sardinia, Italy. Heads of 6-month to 10-year-old Sardinian sheep (n=566) from 124 free-ranging flocks were examined for the presence and location O. ovis larvae from December 1996 to November 1997. Larvae were collected, counted, and larval stages were identified. O. ovis larvae we
