BACKGROUND: Hand dermatitis affects many people and has numerous causes. Few reports have looked at the etiology of hand dermatitis across broad demographics.
OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this investigation were to (1) determine the causes of hand dermatitis in the population patch-tested at a dermatologic referral clinic, (2) report occupations frequently associated with hand dermatitis, and (3) indicate which substances were the more common allergens among individuals evaluated by patch testing for hand dermatitis.

PURPOSE: To determine the release of nickel from 1- and 2-euro coins and the ability to produce allergic contact dermatitis from the application of coins to the palmar skin of nickel-sensitized individuals.
METHODS: Three experiments were conducted. Experiments 1 and 2 checked the release of nickel from 1- and 2-euro coins by using the dimethylglyoxime test. Occupational dermatological problems are common among dental health personnel. We conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the frequency of occupational dermatological problems among dental health personnel in Hordaland county, Norway. 333 of 394 employees (85%) answered the questionnaire. 148 of 333 respondents (44%) reported skin complaints. In order to compare the validity of patient personal history of contact sensitivity to metal alloys with patch test results, 160 patients with hand eczema were patch tested with a standard series according to the ICDRG after a special questionnaire. In 65%, history and patch test results were identical. The aim of this study was to show degree and pattern of hand eczema in affected hairdresser trainees (n = 52), compared with a general population of affected hairdressers (n = 69). The mean ages were 18 years (range: 16-25) for the trainees and 27 years (range: 17-63) for the hairdressers. The following study is based on the evaluation of 116 expert opinions obtained between 1984 and 1987 regarding patients working as hairdressers and suffering from eczemas. BACKGROUND: Risk factors for p-phenylenediamine (PPD) sensitization include the use of hair dyes, the application of temporary black henna tattoos, working as a hairdresser, and, possibly, exposure to hair dye pretests.

In infectious pathology, the gold standard consists of the detection of the pathogen within the sample. Identification of the pathogen is often difficult despite the presence of few and inexpensive tools, such, as special stain, immunohistochemistry, or in situ hybridization specific of the pathogen. In infectious pathology, there are morphological signs, which can guide us towards an etiology. We present some clinicopathological examples illustrating rare or unusual situations in cutaneous infectious pathology.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome has as its hallmarks such diverse manifestations as numerous cutaneous basal cell cancers and epidermal cysts, palmar and plantar pits, keratocysts of the jaw, calcified dural folds, various skeletal anomalies, cleft lip and/or palate, and various other neoplasms or hamartomas. Inheritance is autosomal dominant. The etiology of all of the above findings appears to be a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene that also plays a role in normal embryonic development.
