A field evaluation of four larval mosquito control methods in urban catch basins.

Effective control of mosquitoes in rural Midwestern communities that lack organized mosquito control districts would be aided by baseline data on optimal breeding sites, interannual effects of climate on population emergence and abundance, and efficacy of various control options under field conditions. During 19 surveillance weeks in the summer of 2005, we sampled 100 catch basins each week that were distributed among 10 study zones. Catch basins within each study zone were subjected to 1 of 4 different mosquito control methods or were left untreated. Of the 10 study zones, 5 were in high-inte

Healthcare-associated myiasis: prevention and intervention.

Healthcare-associated myiasis (maggot infestation) can have complications that go well beyond the medical consequences of the infestation for patients, their families, and facilities. Prevention of healthcare-associated myiasis requires effort on two fronts: minimizing patient risk factors and reducing fly populations in the healthcare environment. If myiasis occurs, intervention must be swift, thorough, and interdisciplinary. The first priority always is the well-being of the patient. Preservation and identification of the maggots can help determine the likely timing and circumstances that le

The legal context of mosquito control for West Nile Virus in New York City.

When New York City became the first area in the United States to experience an outbreak of West Nile Virus, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene assumed responsibility for responding to the threat. That department's actions in spraying and taking other actions to control the mosquitoes that spread the disease to humans encountered significant opposition from various environmental groups. Moreover, complying with existing law that governed mosquito control activities became a challenge. This article provides an overview of the department's experience in responding to the th

Protein-Level Interactions as Mediators of Sexual Conflict in Ants.

All social insects with obligate reproductive division of labor evolved from strictly monogamous ancestors, but multiple queen-mating (polyandry) arose de novo, in several evolutionarily derived lineages. Polyandrous ant queens are inseminated soon after hatching and store sperm mixtures for a potential reproductive life of decades. However, they cannot re-mate later in life and are thus expected to control the loss of viable sperm because their lifetime reproductive success is ultimately sperm limited. In the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica,, the survival of newly inseminated sperm is known t

Assessing the Likelihood of Transmission of Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum to Carrot by Potato Psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Hemiptera: Triozidae).

'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' (Lso) is a phloem-limited bacterium that severely affects important Solanaceae and Apiaceae crops, including potato, tomato, pepper, tobacco, carrot and celery. This bacterium is transmitted to solanaceous species by potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, and to Apiaceae by carrot psyllids, including Trioza apicalis and Bactericera trigonica. Five haplotypes of Lso have so far been described, two are associated with solanaceous species and potato psyllids, whereas the other three are associated with carrot and celery crops and carrot psyllids. Little is

Fighting Strategies Against Chagas' Disease: A Review.

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in Latin America, where it is one of the most neglected diseases and is primarily transmitted by triatomine insects. The disease exhibits complexity due to its diverse transmission routes, including vectorial and non-vectorial mechanisms such as blood transfusions and congenital transmission. Effective monitoring and control strategies are critical to mitigating its impact. This review focuses on current monitoring and control efforts, emphasizing the importance of enhanced surveillance sys

Subolesin/Akirin vaccines for the control of arthropod vectors and vectorborne pathogens.

Diseases transmitted by arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies greatly impact human and animal health, and therefore, their control is important for the eradication of vectorborne diseases (VBD). Vaccination is an environmentally friendly alternative for vector control that allows control of several VBD by targeting their common vector. Recent results have suggested that subolesin (SUB) and its orthologue in insects, akirin (AKR) are good candidate antigens for the control of arthropod vector infestations and pathogen infection. SUB was discovered as a tick-protective antig

Occupational allergy to animals.

This chapter reviews the epidemiology, manifestations, etiologic agents, and exposure controls related to occupational allergies from animals and insects, including both respiratory and dermatologic responses. The overall prevalence of allergic respiratory symptoms in exposed workers is about 23% 4-9% of exposed individuals develop asthma. Symptom development is related to duration and intensity of exposure. The most prevalent dermatologic findings are contact urticaria and eczematous dermatitis. While a history of atopy is associated with the risk of symptom development, this factor has poor

A cell surface protein controls endocrine ring gland morphogenesis and steroid production.

Identification of signals for systemic adaption of hormonal regulation would help to understand the crosstalk between cells and environmental cues contributing to growth, metabolic homeostasis and development. Physiological states are controlled by precise pulsatile hormonal release, including endocrine steroids in human and ecdysteroids in insects. We show in Drosophila that regulation of genes that control biosynthesis and signaling of the steroid hormone ecdysone, a central regulator of developmental progress, depends on the extracellular matrix protein Obstructor-A (Obst-A). Ecdysone is pr

Endemic human plague in New Mexico: risk factors associated with infection.

A retrospective case-control study was conducted to identify risk factors, other than contact with infected animal tissues, for infection caused by Yersinia pestis in non-Indian residents of areas with endemic sylvatic plague in New Mexico. The study group consisted of 16 persons who had bacteriologically confirmed cases of plague in the period 1975-1976 and 45 controls who were matched by age, sex, and location of residence. Participants were questioned about outdoor activities, environmental conditions in and around the home, procedures of pet care, exposure to animals and insects, and medic

Unpredictable Prey Motion Shapes Behavior Across Timescales.

UNLABELLED: Locating, tracking, and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigate how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. We find that target mot

Onchocerciasis in West Africa after 2002: a challenge to take up.

Initially planned for a 20 year life time, the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP) will have finally continued its activities for nearly three decades (vector control alone from 1975 to 1989, then vector control and/or therapeutic treatment until 2002). Although onchocerciasis is no longer a problem of public health importance nor an obstacle to socio-economic development in the OCP area, the control of this filariasis is not over because OCP never aimed at eradication, neither of the parasite (Onchocerca volvulus), nor of its vector (Simulium damnosum s.l.). In 2003, the ele

Interrupting Chagas disease transmission in Venezuela.

The interruption of vectorial transmission of Chagas disease in Venezuela is attributed to the combined effects of ongoing entomoepidemiological surveillance, ongoing house spraying with residual insecticides and the concurrent building and modification of rural houses in endemic areas during almost five decades. The original endemic areas which totaled 750,000 km(2), have been reduced to 365,000 km(2). During 1958-1968, initial entomological evaluations carried out showed that the house infestation index ranged between 60-80%, the house infection index at 8-11% and a house density index of 30

Susceptibility to trypanosomosis of three Bos indicus cattle breeds in areas of differing tsetse fly challenge.

Studies to assess the differences in susceptibility to trypanosomosis among Bos indicus cattle breeds (Maasai Zebu, Orma Boran and Galana Boran) were conducted under conditions of varying tsetse fly challenge at the Nguruman escarpment in south-western Kenya, for a period of 1 year. It was found that under tsetse challenge quantified as high, Maasai Zebu and Orma Boran were less susceptible than Galana Boran to trypanosome infections, as judged by the significantly lower incidence of infection, development of less severe anaemia, fewer requirements for trypanocidal drug treatments, higher grow

Metabolic resistance drives cross-resistance in Aedes albopictus to pyriproxyfen and pyrethroid insecticides.

Aedes albopictus is a major global vector of arboviruses. Pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator, is increasingly used for mosquito control, but the potential for resistance and cross-resistance with pyrethroids poses a serious threat. Through 13 generations of laboratory selection, we established a highly pyriproxyfen-resistant Ae. albopictus strain (Lab-R, RR50 = 10.12). This strain developed moderate to high cross-resistance to the permethrin, deltamethrin, and beta-cypermethrin (RR50 = 8.11-10.30). Resistance was associated with significant fitness costs, including prolonged larval devel

Redescription of Agrilus zanthoxylumi Hou & Feng, 1989 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) based on newly designated neotype.

Prickly ash borer (PAB) Agrilus zanthoxylumi was first identified but undescribed by Mr. Tao-qian Hou, Zoological Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the 1980s. This specific name first appeared in the book Cultivation and pest control of Sichuan pepper by Li et al. (1989a) as A. zanthoxylumi Hou & Feng. We have made various efforts to find the original named specimens, but both Hou's and Li's specimens of this species were lost. This insect causes significant damage in prickly ash orchards across northwestern and southwestern China, becoming one of the important economic pests in the p

Necrotizing Fasciitis Extending from the Left Iliopsoas to the Left Thigh Due to Retroperitoneal Penetration of the Descending Colon: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection characterized by rapid destruction of the fascia and subcutaneous tissue, with a high mortality rate of 20%-40%. Although trauma and insect bites are common causes, gastrointestinal perforation as an etiology is exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 70-year-old man receiving combination immunotherapy with nivolumab and ipilimumab for malignant pleural mesothelioma. The patient had been taking 12.5 mg of prednisolone daily for 6 months to manage immunotherapy-induced adrenal insufficiency and enteritis

Effects of a bloodless diet on fitness and malaria susceptibility in Anopheles mosquitoes from Burkina Faso.

Emerging resistance in malaria vectors and parasites has accelerated the development of novel control strategies such as the Sterile Insect Technique and Wolbachia-based approaches, which require large-scale mosquito rearing. These methods traditionally rely on vertebrate Blood, raising ethical and logistical concerns. This study evaluated the effects of a BLOODless™ on wing size, longevity, and Plasmodium falciparum susceptibility in Anopheles coluzzii and An. gambiae from Burkina Faso, and the Kisumu An. gambiae strain. Blood and Bloodless-reared mosquitoes were compared across seven generat

MD-2-related lipid-recognition protein-like is involved in mosquito reproduction by affecting lipid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito vector control requires novel approaches. Blood-feeding female mosquitoes not only sustain their reproduction, but also facilitate pathogen dissemination. Therefore, studying female mosquito reproduction and targeting genes or proteins related to reproduction could lead to an alternative method of vector control. Herein, we focused on the role of MD-2-related lipid-recognition protein-like (ML) in the reproduction of female mosquitoes [Culex pipiens pallens (Diptera: Culicidae)]. RESULTS: CpML was predominantly expressed in female mosquito ovaries. Injection of a small in
