Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of Cat Scratch Disease.

The cause of cat scratch disease (CSD), first described in France in 1950 and in the United States in 1951, was unknown until 1983 when the … es the cat flea in absence of direct contact transmission. CSD is the most common cause of regional lymphadenitis in children and adolescents. Present knowledge on the etiology, clinical features, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of CSD are presented. Cat-scratch neuroretinitis.

BACKGROUND: Cat-scratch disease is a subacute regional lymphadenitis, usually preceded by a history of a cat scratch or exposure to kittens. The disease is caused by Bartonella henselae, and possibly Bartonella quintana, pleomorphic gram-negative rods formerly known as Rochalimaea henselae and Rochalimaea quintana. Ocular involvement is rare and typically manifests as either Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome or neuroretinitis. Patients with neuroretinitis resulting from cat-scratch disease may be asymptomatic or experience mild-to-severe vision loss. The clinical features, angiographic appear…

Development and progression of psoriasiform dermatitis and systemic lesions in the flaky skin (fsn) mouse mutant.

Flaky skin (fsn) mutant mice were originally described as a mouse model for psoriasis accompanied by hematological abnormalities. However, h … is around portal triads in the liver, splenomegaly due to massive erythropoiesis, and granulomatous lymphadenitis. This spontaneous mouse mutation provides a useful model for modulating neovascularization and keratinocyte hyperproliferation, especially since the cutaneous changes resemble some forms of psoriasis in humans.

Acute and chronic gastrointestinal manifestations associated with Yersinia enterocolitica infection. A Norwegian 10-year follow-up study on 458 hospitalized patients.

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the gastrointestinal manifestations of yersiniosis. During the period 1974 to 1983, Yersinia enterocolitica infection was diagnosed in 458 patients, by isolation from fecal samples or by antibody response. At first admission, 184 patients had abdominal pain; 200, diarrhea; 45, vomiting; and 36, weight loss. Ulcerative colitis was diagnosed in 7 patients, Crohn's disease in 2, and unspecific colitis in 11. Mesenteric lymphadenitis or ileitis were found in 43 of 56 patients at laparotomy. The patients were followed for 4 to 14 years (1987). Thirty-ei…

Observations on the clinical manifestations and treatment of an experimental infection with Brugia malayi in man.

This paper reports clinical observations made during experimental Brugia malayi infection in man. This was induced by 52 infective larvae-ca … e larvae. Seven days after the infection, general (but fluctuating) pruritus developed, followed by lymphadenitis and swelling of the hand and forearm, with a mild pyrexia for nearly 3 months. The eosinophil counts continuously increased. There were four separate attacks of lymphangitis. On day 142, microfilaraemia was first detected. After two more weeks, the …

[Malignant lymphomas and immunosialadenitis (author's transl].

Immune sialadenitis with or without clinical symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome represents an inflammation of the salivary duct system with considerable proliferation of the immunoactive lymphoproliferative system. By prolonged stimulation the immune system can turn into malignant lymphoma, mainly of immunocytoma or immunoblastic sarcoma type. In four out of 77 cases from the salivary gland register of the Institute of Pathology, University of Hamburg, showing myoepithelial sialadenitis, malignant lymphomas associated with chronic myoepithelial lymphadenitis were observed. According to the new "Ki…

Co-occurrence of disseminated Mycobacterium kansasii infection and Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease in an immunocompetent patient.

Disseminated Mycobacterium kansasii infection and Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) are rare and diagnostically challenging conditions, especially when they occur together. They present with similar symptoms such as lymphadenopathy, prolonged fever and weight loss, which often lead to misdiagnoses. This case report describes the uncommon co-occurrence of disseminated M. kansasii infection and KFD in a young female patient who experienced a prolonged, intermittent high-grade fever, weight loss and lymphadenopathy. A lymph node biopsy showed features typical of KFD, while mycobacterial culture dete

Deep Proteomics Analysis Unravels the Molecular Signatures of Tonsillar B Cells in PFAPA and OSAS in the Pediatric Population.

Tonsils are secondary lymphoid organs that play a crucial role in the immunological response, with B cells being a major component involved in both innate and adaptive immunity. Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are both common pediatric conditions involving tonsillar pathology. In both syndromes, the molecular pathways dysregulated in tonsillar B cells are still to be understood. The study aimed to unravel and compare the proteomic profiles of tonsillar CD19+ B cells isolated from pediatric patients with

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease-Like Inflammatory Reaction in a Silicone Breast Implant Seroma.

INTRODUCTION: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) may have an autoimmune etiology and some cases have been associated with silicone breast implants. Cytomorphologic features of the disease have been well characterized by fine-needle aspiration of lymph nodes. They are so specific as to permit a precise cytologic diagnosis. Cytologic features have not been reported in fluid specimens. CASE: A 33-year-old female presented with a unilateral periprosthetic silicone breast seroma. The fluid was drained, and cytological analysis revealed numerous lymphocytes with no neutrophils, karyorrhectic nuclear de

Intramammary lymph nodes: normal and abnormal multimodality imaging features.

Intramammary lymph nodes (IMLN) are one of the most common benign findings at screening mammography. However, abnormal IMLN features, such as diminished or absent hilum, thickened cortex, not circumscribed margins, increased size or interval change, warrants additional follow-up or pathologic analysis to exclude malignancy. Some benign inflammatory conditions may be associated with imaging-detected suspected abnormal IMLN, such as reactive hyperplasia and silicone-induced lymphadenopathy. In patients with known breast cancer, IMLN are a potential site of locoregional spread, which can change t

About a rare disease misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma or tuberculosis: Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease KFD is a rare and benign cause of cervical lymphadenopathy. It is an anatomoclinical entity of unknown etiology. The confirmation of the diagnosis is always provided by histological lymph node study. The clinical picture sometimes evokes lymphoma or tuberculosis. The evolution is generally favorable with spontaneous healing after a few weeks. We report the case of a 26-year-old woman who had consulted for cervical lymphadenopathy associated with fever. The cervical lymph node biopsy concluded to Kikuch-Fujimoto's disease. The evolution was marked by rapid regression

[Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease mimicking malignant lymphoma in adolescents].

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare cause of lymphadenopathy in children. This benign disease can mimic lymphoma and misleads doctors. It was first described in Asia, where it occurred especially in young women. Recent publications show that it can also affect teenagers and young adults in Caucasian populations. The pathophysiology remains unknown. Three hypotheses have been raised for this disease: the role of viruses (in particular HHV-8), genetic predisposition (two alleles in HLA class II genes were found more frequently in patients with…

Virulence of Bacteria Colonizing Vascular Bundles in Ischemic Lower Limbs.

BACKGROUND: We documented previously the presence of bacterial flora in vascular bundles, lymphatics, and lymph nodes of ischemic lower limbs amputated because of multifocal atheromatic changes that made them unsuitable for reconstructive surgery and discussed their potential role in tissue destruction. The question arose why bacterial strains inhabiting lower limb skin and considered to be saprophytes become pathogenic once they colonize deep tissues. Bacterial pathogenicity is evoked by activation of multiple virulence factors encoded by groups of genes. METHODS: We identified virulence gen
