Temporary Rectal Stenting for Management of Severe Perineal Wounds in Two Dogs.

Perineal wounds in dogs present a challenge due to limited local availability of skin for closure and constant exposure to fecal contaminant … was detected. Long-term outcome was deemed good. Dog 2 presented with multiple necrotic wounds with myiasis, circumferentially surrounding the anus and extending along the tail. A 14 mm internal diameter endotracheal tube was placed per-rectum. The perineal and tail wounds were managed with surgical debridement and wet-to-dry and honey dressings prior to …

Insecticidal and repellent effects of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil against Lucilia cuprina.

Laboratory studies were conducted to assess the effect of tea tree oil (TTO) from Melaleuca alternifolia (terpinen-4-ol chemotype) against d … ehaviour stimulated by the TTO. Addition of TTO to wound treatments may aid in wound protection and myiasis resolution by preventing oviposition by L. cuprina adults, insecticidal action against L. cuprina eggs and larvae, stimulating larvae to leave the wound and through antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that aid in wound healing.

Critical care, surgical management, xenotransfusion, and long-term monitoring in a maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) with severe traumatic injury.

This case report describes the advanced critical care, surgical management, and one-year outcome of a free-ranging adult male maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) presenting with severe polytrauma and concomitant renal dioctophymosis. The animal was rescued with a severely contaminated open tibial fracture associated with extensive soft tissue necrosis and active myiasis, rendering limb-sparing procedures unfeasible. A high pelvic limb amputation was therefore performed as a life-saving intervention. Diagnostic imaging and ultrasonography revealed extensive destruction of the right kidney caused…

Molecular Recognition of Odorant-Binding Proteins WmagOBP39280 and WmagOBP42531 to Wohlfahrtia magnifica Pheromones and Bactrian Camel Volatiles.

Wohlfahrtia magnifica, a worldwide pest, causes myiasis in many domestic animals. Its pheromones and volatiles from Bactrian camels were reported to attract or repel W. magnifica, but the molecular mechanisms are still unclear. A small protein in the insect olfactory system, called odorant binding protein (OBP), plays a crucial role in odor reception. In this study, two W. magnifica odorant-binding proteins (WmagOBPs) genes, WmagOBP42531 and WmagOBP39280, were cloned from the antennae of W. magnifica, and then expressed and purified by prokaryotic expression. Fluorescence binding assays demons…

High innate attractiveness to black targets in the blue blowfly, Calliphora vomitoria (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Calliphora vomitoria is a myiasis-causing fly in many animal species including humans. The control of blowflies is still anchored on the use of chemicals. However, mass trapping and lure-and-kill techniques represent a promising alternative to pesticides. Visual and olfactory cues are the main stimuli routing the fly's landing behavior. Notably, color attractiveness has been barely explored in flies of medical and veterinary importance, with special reference to blowflies. In this study, we investigated the innate color preferences in C. vomitoria adults, testing binary combinations of painted…

Sequence variation in three mitochondrial genes among Gasterophilus intestinalis isolates from two distinct regions in China.

Horse gastrointestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Gasterophilus spp. has a worldwide distribution. However, little information is available on the genetic variation of Gasterophilus spp. at the molecular level. In the present study, sequence variation was examined in three mitochondrial (mt) genes, namely mt cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), NADH dehydrogenase subunits 5 (nad5) and large subunit ribosomal RNA (rrnL), among G. intestinalis isolates originating from Heilongjiang Provience and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The complete cox1, nad5, and rrnL gene sequences were amp…

Skin lesions in returning travellers.

Skin lesions, apart from diarrhoeas, fever of unknown origin, and respiratory tract infections belong to the most frequent medical problems … tious lesions may be originally tropical (e.g. dengue, chikungunya, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, myiasis, tungiasis, loiasis), although the majority are cosmopolitan (arthropod bites, sunburns, allergic rashes). The evaluation of skin lesions depends on many factors, including immune status of patients, use of medicines, exposure on health hazards (fau …

The molecular systematics of blowflies and screwworm flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) using 28S rRNA, COX1 and EF-1α: insights into the evolution of dipteran parasitism.

The Calliphoridae include some of the most economically significant myiasis-causing flies in the world - blowflies and screwworm flies - with many being notorious for their parasitism of livestock. However, despite more than 50 years of research, key taxonomic relationships within the family remain unresolved. This study utilizes nucleotide sequence data from the protein-coding genes COX1 (mitochondrial) and EF1α (nuclear), and the 28S rRNA (nuclear) gene, from 57 blowfly taxa to improve resolution of key evolutionary relationships within the family Calliphoridae. Bayesian phylogenetic inferen…

Insight into molecular phylogeny and haplotype diversity of the dog louse fly (Hippobosca longipennis) in India.

BACKGROUND: Hippobosca longipennis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) is an obligate haematophagous fly of domestic and wild vertebrate hosts across the arid and semi-arid regions of Asia, Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East. Being a potential vector for many pathogens and a tormenting ectoparasite, the present study was envisaged to perform molecular characterization, phylogeny, and population structure analysis of H. longipennis infesting dogs in Haryana, India. METHODOLOGY: The molecular characterization and phylogeny of the flies collected from the infested dogs (n = 8) were performed by ta

Prevalence and seasonal dynamics of botfly (Metacuterebra infulata) parasitism in the rodent Hylaeamys megacephalus in a remnant of Brazilian Cerrado.

Parasitism is mediated by environmental factors and intrinsic host attributes, leading to spatio-temporal dynamics of host-parasite infestation. Mammals are the main hosts of larvae of Cuterebrinae flies, which have been observed in the neotropical rodent Hylaeamys megacephalus (Fischer) (Rodentia, Cricetidae) within the Brazilian Cerrado. Besides describing seasonal dynamics of botfly parasitism in this rodent, we also tested the hypothesis that the prevalence of botfly parasitism varies seasonally, with larvae being more prevalent in the warm-wet season, due to favorable climatic conditions

Quantitative proteomics reveals significant variation in host responses of cattle with differing buffalo fly susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: Control of buffalo flies (Haematobia irritans exigua, BFs) relies mainly on chemical methods; however, resistance to insecticides is widespread in BF populations. Breeding for resistance to BFs represents a possible alternative, but direct phenotyping of animals is laborious and often inaccurate. The availability of reliable diagnostic biomarker(s) to identify low BF carrier cattle would facilitate rapid and accurate selection for genetic improvement. However, limited information is available regarding differences amongst cattle in host responses to BF infestation. METHODS: This s

External ophthalmomyiasis caused by Oestrus ovis in east China.

External ophthalmomyiasis is a superficial infestation of the eye tissues by the larvae or maggots of flies. External ophthalmomyiasis, caused by Oestrus ovis, is found occasionally in shepherding areas, but is rare in the cities of eastern China. We present a case of a 30-year-old man with complaints of a foreign body sensation, lacrimation and itching in the right eye, with uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20 in each eye. Six larvae were removed from the conjunctival sac and were ultimately authenticated as the first instar larvae of Oestrus ovis. He responded well after prompt appropriate th…

Clinical applications of topical ivermectin in dermatology.

Ivermectin (IVM) is a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic drug with significant anti-inflammatory properties. The emergence of treatment resistance to lindane, permethrin, and possibly malathion complicates the global strategy for management of common parasitic skin diseases such as scabies and head lice. In this regard. IVM has been safely and effectively used in the treatment of these common human infestations. In addition, IVM may be useful in inflammatory cutaneous disorders such as papulopustular rosacea where demodex may play a role in pathogenesis. Herein, we review the current applications o

External ophthalmomyiasis seen in a patient from Istanbul, Turkey.

Ophthalmomyiasis externa, results from infestation of the conjunctiva by the larval form of Oestrus ovis. It is usually seen in rural areas. We report a case with ophthalmomyiasis externa in a young man living in an urban area (Istanbul, Turkey) who had no known history of traveling to the rural area. Even in patients living in urban areas ophthalmomyiasis externa should be taken into consideration in differential diagnosis of red eye.
