Stress, defined as an acute threat to homeostasis, evokes an adaptive or allostatic response and can have both a short- and long-term influence on the function of the gastrointestinal tract. The enteric nervous system is connected bidirectionally to the brain by parasympathetic and sympathetic pathways forming the brain-gut axis. The neural network of the brain, which generates the stress response, is called the central stress circuitry and includes the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, amygdala and periaqueductal gray. It receives input from the somatic and visceral afferent pathwa

Glucocorticoids are important hormones in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis. We infused normal rats with dexamethasone given intracere … ted by NPY. Moreover, due to the lack of effects observed in vagotomized animals, activation of the parasympathetic nervous system by central dexamethasone infusion is proposed. Glucocorticoid action is known to involve prereceptor metabolism by enzymes such as 11beta-HSD-1 that converts inactive into active glucocorticoids. Mice overexpressing 11beta-HSD-1 in adipose tissue we …

Following space flight or head down tilt bed rest, cardiovascular deconditioning is often observed as a failure to maintain arterial blood pressure with symptoms of presyncope or syncope. LBNP can be used as a stressor of the cardiovascular system to observe the regulatory process. We have recently developed a new method to study cardiovascular control. Coarse graining spectral analysis (CGSA), allows simultaneous extraction of the harmonic components to evaluate sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activities, and of the underlying complexity of the physiological response as given by the s

Activities of both autonomic nervous system divisions, sympathetic and parasympathetic, are dual--continuous, tonic and changing, modulating. Tonic activity domination accompanies stationary (patho)physiological conditions, while modulating activity occurs with the change of stimuli. The intensity of the two activities is inversely proportional. In patients with heart failure, spectral analysis of heart rate variability displays reduced sympathetic modulation activity during illness, as a logical consequence of an increased sympathetic tone. On the other hand, vagal modulation activity slightl

Tricyclic antidepressants are among the commonest causes of both non-fatal and fatal drug poisoning in the world. Their toxicity is due to effects on the brain, the heart, the respiratory system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Symptoms usually appear within 4 hours of an overdose and all but the most seriously poisoned patients recover within 24 hours. The most common clinical features are dry mouth, blurred vision, dilated pupils, sinus tachycardia, pyramidal neurological signs, and drowsiness. In severe poisoning, there may be coma, convulsions, respiratory depression, hypotension an…

Discomfort and pain are the sensations most commonly evoked from viscera. Most nociceptive signals that originate from visceral organs reach the central nervous system (c.n.s.) via afferent fibres in sympathetic nerves, whereas parasympathetic nerves contain mainly those visceral afferent fibres concerned with the non-sensory aspects of visceral afferent function. Noxious stimulation of viscera activates a variety of specific and non-specific receptors, the vast majority of which are connected to unmyelinated afferent fibres. Studies on the mechanisms of visceral sensation can thus provide inf

BACKGROUND: Consumer preference is rapidly changing from 2D to 3D movies due to the sensational effects of 3D scenes, like those in Avatar and The Hobbit. Two 3D viewing technologies are available: active shutter glasses and passive polarized glasses. However, there are consistent reports of discomfort while viewing in 3D mode where the discomfort may refer to dizziness, headaches, nausea or simply not being able to see in 3D continuously.
METHODS: In this paper, we propose a theory that 3D technology which projects the two images (required for 3D perception) alternatively, cannot provide tru

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The functional roles of M(2) and M(3) muscarinic receptors in neurogenic cholinergic contractions in gastrointestinal tracts remain to be elucidated. To address this issue, we studied cholinergic nerve-induced contractions in the ileum using mutant mice lacking M(2) or M(3) receptor subtypes.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Contractile responses to transmural electrical (TE) stimulation were isometrically recorded in ileal segments from M(2)-knockout (KO), M(3)-KO, M(2)/M(3)-double KO, and wild-type mice.
KEY RESULTS: TE stimulation at 2-50 Hz frequency-dependently evoked a fa

Adenosine and its derivatives enhanced the contractile responses to transmural nerve stimulation in rabbit isolated bronchial smooth muscle. 5'-N-Ethylcarboxamideadenosine (NECA) was the most potent adenosine analogue studied. Enhancement of contractile responses by NECA was competitively antagonized by 8-p-sulfophenyltheophylline. Guanethidine, mepyramine, capsaicin or eicosatetraynoic acid did not antagonize the enhancement elicited by adenosine or NECA. NECA did not enhance the contractile responses to exogenously applied acetylcholine or contractile responses elicited after administration

Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence in women. Stress urinary incontinence involves involuntary leakage of urine in response to abdominal pressure caused by activities, such as sneezing and coughing. The condition affects millions of women worldwide, causing physical discomfort as well as social distress and even social isolation. This type of incontinence is often seen in women after middle age and it can be caused by impaired closure mechanisms of the urethra as a result of a weak pelvic floor or poorly supported urethral sphincter (urethral hypermobili

The vagus nerve (VN) is the primary parasympathetic nerve, providing two-way communication between the body and brain through a network of afferent and efferent fibers. Evidence suggests that altered VN signaling is linked to changes in the neuroimmune system, including microglia. Dysfunction of microglia, the resident innate immune cells of the brain, is associated with various neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and epilepsy. While the mechanistic understanding linking the VN, microglia, and neu

Physiological correlates of behavioral and emotional problems, substance use onset and initiation of risky sexual behavior have not been studied in adolescents with prenatal drug exposure. We studied the concordance between baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) at age 3 and baseline cortisol levels at age 11. We hypothesized that children who showed concordance between RSA and cortisol would have lower neurobehavioral disinhibition scores which would in turn predict age of substance use onset and first sexual intercourse. The sample included 860 children aged 16 years participating in th

Diving can have significant cardiovascular effects on the human body and increase the risk of developing cardiac health issues. This study aimed to investigate the autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses of healthy individuals during simulated dives in hyperbaric chambers and explore the effects of the humid environment on these responses. Electrocardiographic- and heart-rate-variability (HRV)-derived indices were analyzed, and their statistical ranges were compared at different depths during simulated immersions under dry and humid conditions. The results showed that humidity significantly a

The inflammatory reflex is known as the body's primary defense against infection and has been implicated in a number of diseases. The magnitude of the inflammatory response is important, as an extreme or insufficient response can be differentially harmful to the individual. Converging evidence suggests that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates the inflammatory reflex. Heart rate variability (HRV) can be separated into components that primarily reflect parasympathetic (PNS) or vagal activity (i.e., indices of vagally mediated HRV) and a combination of both sympathetic (SNS) and PNS infl

Although heart rate (HR) is governed by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, a head-to-head comparison of the open-loop dynamic characteristics of the total arc from a baroreceptor pressure input to the HR response has yet to be performed. We estimated the transfer function from carotid sinus pressure input to the HR response (HCSP→HR) before and after bilateral vagotomy (n = 7) as well as before and after the administration of a β-blocker propranolol (n = 8) in anesthetized male Wistar-Kyoto rats. The carotid sinus pressure was perturbed according to a Gaussian white noise sig…

OBJECTIVES: Hepatic parasympathetic nerves branch off the vagus nerve. The vagal and hepatic nervous systems are important in liver physiological processes and some diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and liver cirrhosis. We were interested in vagal nerve integrity and subsequent diseases in peptic ulcer patients. Herein, we used National Health Insurance database in Taiwan and retrospectively assessed the risk of developing liver cirrhosis in peptic ulcer patients with and without complications by surgical treatments.
METHODS: A cohort of 357 423 peptic ulcer patients without Helicobacter py

In this work, we used a sensitive and noninvasive computational method to assess diabetic cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) from pulse oximeter (photoplethysmographic; PPG) recordings from mice. The method, which could be easily applied to humans, is based on principal dynamic mode (PDM) analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Unlike the power spectral density, PDM has been shown to be able to separately identify the activities of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems without pharmacological intervention. HRV parameters were measured by processing PPG signals from cons
