Dietary oligofructose and inulin protect mice from enteric and systemic pathogens and tumor inducers.

Prebiotics induce changes in the population and metabolic characteristics of the gastrointestinal bacteria, modulate enteric and systemic immune functions, and provide laboratory rodents with resistance to carcinogens that promote colorectal cancer. There is less known about protection from other challenges. Therefore, mice of the B6C3F1 strain were fed for 6 wk a control diet with 100 g/kg cellulose or one of two experimental diets with the cellulose replaced entirely by the nondigestible oligosaccharides (NDO) oligofructose and inulin. From each diet, 25 mice were challenged by a promoter of…

Dietary modulation of the gut microbiota--a randomised controlled trial in obese postmenopausal women.

The gut microbiota has been implicated in obesity and its progression towards metabolic disease. Dietary interventions that target the gut microbiota have been suggested to improve metabolic health. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of interventions with Lactobacillus paracasei F19 or flaxseed mucilage on the gut microbiota and metabolic risk markers in obesity. A total of fifty-eight obese postmenopausal women were randomised to a single-blinded, parallel-group intervention of 6-week duration, with a daily intake of either L. paracasei F19 (9.4 × 1010 colony-forming u

Pectin and high-amylose maize starch increase caecal hydrogen production and relieve hepatic ischaemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

We investigated whether the feeding of high H2-generating dietary fibre and resistant starch (RS) could suppress hepatic ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, which results from oxidative stress, in rats fed a pectin (Pec) or high-amylose maize starch (HAS) diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a control (C) diet, with or without Pec (0-5 % Pec) or HAS (0-30 % HAS) supplementation for 7 d. Portal H2 concentration showed a significant dose-dependent increase with the amount of Pec or HAS supplementation. Plasma alanine and aspartate aminotransferase activities remarkably increased in the C rats

Combination of genistin and fructooligosaccharides prevents bone loss in ovarian hormone deficiency.

We have reported that soy isoflavones are capable of preventing loss of bone mineral density (BMD) in rats due to ovariectomy. The intestinal microflora is important in rendering soy isoflavones bioavailability by facilitating their conversion to equol. Hence, substances that can modulate the intestinal microflora could affect the bioavailability of isoflavones. The purpose of this study was to examine whether combination of genistin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a prebiotic, can enhance the effects of soy isoflavones on bone in ovariectomized (OVX) female rats. Forty-eight 90-day-old fema

A gut microbiota-stem cell axis mediates the anti-intestinal aging effect of fucoidan from Apostichopus japonicus.

BACKGROUND: Apostichopus japonicus is a traditional medicinal and culinary species, with existing anti-aging research primarily focusing on its bioactive peptides. In contrast, the anti-aging potential of its major polysaccharide, fucoidan (Aj-FUC), remains largely unexplored. Since the intestine is a central target in the aging process and the primary site for polysaccharide interaction, this study investigates the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of Aj-FUC against d-galactose (d-Gal)-induced intestinal senescence in mice. RESULTS: Aj-FUC significantly improved intestinal functio

The gut-heart axis in heart failure: from bidirectional pathophysiological mechanisms to integrative therapeutic strategies.

Heart failure (HF), as the terminal stage of cardiovascular diseases, involves complex pathophysiological mechanisms that extend beyond the heart itself and involve the interactive regulation of multiple organ systems. The gut-heart axis theory reveals that the gut microbiota, functioning as a micro-organ, plays a core role in the development and progression of HF through bidirectional regulatory mechanisms. HF-induced hemodynamic disturbances reshape the gut microenvironment, leading to the collapse of intestinal physical and immune barrier functions. In this altered microenvironment, dysregu

Larimichthys crocea Swim Bladder Polysaccharides Attenuate 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Intestinal Injury by Modulating the Gut-Metabolic Axis.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a first-line chemotherapeutic agent for solid tumors, but its clinical application is severely limited by dose-dependent intestinal injury that impairs patient quality of life and compromises therapeutic efficacy. Natural polysaccharides, especially marine-derived ones, have become safe and multi-targeted gut-protective candidates due to their excellent biocompatibility and prebiotic-like activities. Larimichthys crocea swim bladder is a characteristic marine biological resource, and its polysaccharides (CIPs) have shown potential bioactivities, yet their protective me

Nanobubble Radical-Driven N2 Hydrogenation for Sustainable Ammonia Production: A Haber-Bosch Alternative under Mild Conditions.

Ammonia is a cornerstone for global agriculture and promising renewable energy storage, yet its production through the conventional Haber-Bosch process accounts for nearly 2% of worldwide energy consumption, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. Recent advances in interfacial chemistry, such as droplet-assisted reactions, have demonstrated unique reactivity in confined environments under mild conditions. However, many of these approaches rely on hydroxyl radicals and exhibit limited selectivity toward oxygen-free hydrogen-rich products like ammonia. Here, we report a catal

Nonequilibrium Formation of C4 Carbonyls in Interstellar Ices Linked to Amino Acids.

Complex organic molecules in interstellar ices and carbonaceous asteroids record key steps in the chemical evolution toward life, yet the origin of branched carbonyl compoundsa fundamental class of biorelevant moleculesremains unresolved. Here, we demonstrate the efficient formation of C4 carbonyls, isobutyraldehyde ((CH3)2CHCHO) and 2-butanone (CH3CH2COCH3) via barrierless radical-radical recombination in carbon monoxide-propane (CO-C3H8; 1:1.1 ± 0.2) and ethane-acetaldehyde (C2H6-CH3CHO; 1.5 ± 0.3:1) ice mixtures at 5 K irradiated with 5 keV electrons as proxies for secondary electrons gen

Multidimensional intestinal barrier repair strategies for alleviating inflammatory bowel disease and gut-liver axis-associated metabolic liver disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation driven by intestinal barrier disruption, immune dysregulation, and microbiota imbalance. Barrier dysfunction not only aggravates intestinal inflammation but also promotes metabolic liver diseases, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), through the gut-liver axis. However, current IBD therapies mainly target intestinal oxidative stress and inflammation, with limited efficacy, while NASH treatments focus on the liver, and interventions targeting the gut-liver axis remain limited. Here, we developed a syne

Short-chain fatty acid-producing psychobiotics in mood disorders: mechanistic insights into the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder, constitute a primary source of global disability, and with conventional monoamine-targeted pharmacotherapy, approximately one-third of patients remain with treatment-resistant disease. Over the past decade, the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) has emerged as a systems-level pathophysiological framework that explains the chronic neuroinflammation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity, and impaired neuroplasticity that characterize treatment-resista

The gut-lung axis and viral pneumonia: Unrevealing the gut microbiota.

Viral pneumonia is often accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms, highlighting the central role of the gut-lung axis in the disease process. Despite mounting evidence that links viral pneumonia to gut microbiota dysregulation, the precise function of gut microbiota remains controversial, especially regarding the bidirectional modulation of host immunity driven by microbial metabolites and the systemic immune effects regulated through the gut-lung axis. This review focuses on the period from 2020 to 2025 and systematically elaborates on the emerging advances surrounding the bidirectional cross

Integrated analysis of the miRNA-mRNA regulatory network and role of the miRNA 1971-x in poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) immunoenhancement in gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio).

Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), a bacterial-derived homopolymer, has recently emerged as a promising prebiotic with immunostimulatory properties in aquatic animals. However, the immunomodulatory molecular remains unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in post-transcriptional gene regulation, particularly in immune function. In this study, we investigated the immunoenhancement effects of dietary PHB supplementation in gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) by analyzing miRNA and mRNA expression profiles in the spleen. Results showed that a total of 948 known miRNAs and 471 novel miRNAs i

The synergistic interplay between vitamin A, dietary fiber, and the microbiota-gut-brain axis: a potential mechanism for preventing Alzheimer's disease.

The human gastrointestinal tract harbors a vast and diverse microbial community, with the gut microbiome playing a fundamental role in numerous biological processes that influence overall health and disease progression. Emerging evidence has identified bacterial lipopolysaccharides in the hippocampus of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), highlighting the intricate relationship between the gastrointestinal tract, gut microbiome, and the central and enteric nervous systems-commonly referred to as the "microbiota-gut-brain axis." In this review, we explore the mechanisms by which the microbi
