A method is described for evaluation of fat-soluble vitamin in human adipose tissue with the aim to obtain, accurately and within the shortest analysis time, a time-integrated measure of exposure to vitamins from the diet. Fat tissue was deproteinized with ethanol and extracted with n-hexane. Normal-phase HPLC was performed in a Lichrosorb Si60 column with a gradient of n-hexane-2-propanol at 1 ml/min. Besides the known compounds longistylines C (1), D (2), and 3,5-dimethoxystilbene (5), five new prenylated stilbenes, named chiricanines A--E (3, 4, 6--8), have been isolated from the root bark of Lonchocarpus chiricanus. Incubation of an isoenzyme of phospholipase A2 (PLA2, isolated from snake venom) with porcine leukocytes resulted in the formation of several trihydroxytetraene- containing compounds which were derived from endogenous sources of arachidonic acid. The formation of these endogenous compounds was dose-dependent with an EC50 of approximately 1.25 x 10(-8) M. The serum concentration of phylloquinone (vitamin K1) was measured in 34 healthy mothers and in the arterial cord blood of their newborn infants.
