Strongyloides stercoralis: identification of antigens in natural human infections from endemic areas of the United States.

Using Western-blot analysis, we identified eight immunodominant antigens (apparent molecular weights 96, 86, 75, 56, 41, 32, 28, and 26 kDa) of Strongyloides stercoralis in natural human infections. For this study, 78 individual serum samples were obtained from S. stercoralis-infected patients residing in endemic areas of the United States. Poly A+ RNA was translated in vitro in the rabbit-reticulocyte lysate system. The newly synthesized translation products were immuno-precipitated with S. stercoralis human infection sera. All eight of the identified antigens were detected in the immunopreci

Cytologic detection of strongyloides stercoralis in a routine cervicovaginal smear. A case report.

A 28-year-old, lactating woman came for a routine checkup. Her cytologic smear revealed a single larva of Strongyloides stercoralis. On reviewing the literature on parasites encountered in cytologic smears, S stercoralis was found to be extremely rare. Our case is probably the second in the world and the first reported from India. A review of the literature on various parasites encountered in the cytologic smear is presented.

Regulatory effect of anti-interleukin-5 monoclonal antibody on intestinal worm burden in a primary infection with strongyloides venezuelensis in mice.

The intestinal worm burden in Strongyloides venezuelensis-infected mice was influenced by treatment with anti-interleukin-5 (IL-5) monoclonal antibody (NC17) when NC17 was given to mice 3-7 days before infection. The present study has examined the involvement of IL-5 in susceptibility at different in the development of the parasite in the host. The results show that the number of tissue-migrating larvae recovered from the lungs in a primary infection was not affected by anti-IL-5 monoclonal antibody treatment, whereas intestinal worm counts increased in mice treated with 0.25-1 mg of NC17. Sudden death of calves by experimental infection with Strongyloides papillosus. IV. Electrocardiographic and pneumographic observations at critical moments of the disease.

Electrocardiographic and pneumographic observations at critical moments were carried out on five calves that died suddenly following experimental infections with Strongyloides papillosus. Time which elapsed during these critical moments was calculated from the time of observation of ventricular flutter (VF) to the appearance of accelerated respiration and cessation of respiration. The beginning of accelerated respiration ranged from -19 to 41 s after VF. Time (minutes:seconds) of cessation of respiration ranged from 2:10 to 3:50 after VF. The results of the experiment suggested sudden cardiac

[Occurrence of Strongyloides stercoralis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)].

A comparative study on the occurrence of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae in 554 patients with AIDS and in 142 patients suffering from infectious diseases other than AIDS was conducted during the period from January 1987 to December 1988. The two groups was constituted by male individuals in-patients at Emílio Ribas Hospital--São Paulo. Faeces samples from 696 patients were submitted to spontaneous sedimentation method and Rugai method. The data obtained from the present investigation demonstrated a similar prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis in both groups (p > 0.05) indicating no signifi

Developmental biology and migration of Strongyloides ratti in the rat.

Most recent authors suggest that larvae of the threadworm, Strongyloides ratti, migrate from a cutaneous infection site to the small intestine via the naso-frontal region of the head. However, the proportion of larvae that successfully reach the intestine having followed this pathway had not been determined. Using compartmental analysis we have obtained a comprehensive quantitative description of larval migration during a primary infection of rats with S. ratti. Mean residence times in organs through which larvae migrate were calculated and the proportion of the larvae arriving in the small in

The use of isoenzyme electrophoresis in the taxonomy of Strongyloides.

The limited usefulness of traditional taxonomic methods combined with the discovery of a Strongyloides parasitic in man in Papua New Guinea (PNG) that resembles S. fuelleborni, a parasite of man and other primates in tropical Africa, has precipitated the need to apply new methods to the taxonomy of the genus. In this study isoenzyme electrophoresis has been used on Strongyloides isolates of many different origins. Cluster analysis of the data suggested that existence of three main groups within the material considered, consisting of (1) isolates of S. stercoralis, (2) isolates from PNG domesti

The efficacy of ivermectin against Strongyloides papillosus in cattle.

The efficacy of ivermectin was evaluated against Strongyloides papillosus in four controlled trials in cattle. Thirty-four animals were inoculated subcutaneously with S. papillosus 3rd stage larvae 14-24 days before treatment. At 7-14 days after treatment, calves were slaughtered and the number of adult S. papillosus present in the small intestine counted. Faecal egg counts were carried out before and after treatment. Seventeen control animals received a single subcutaneous injection of vehicle solution at a dose volume of 1 ml/50 kg body weight, and 17 calves were treated once with ivermectin

The course of infection in rats given small primary doses of Strongyloides ratti and S. venezuelensis.

Development of exact doses (less than 100) of Strongyloides venezuelensis third-stage larvae in adult Wistar rats was insignificant (mean proportion of 0.076 of the dose at day 8, n = 16) compared with a homogonic strain of S. ratti (0.538, n = 6; 0.726, n = 6) and heterogonic S. ratti (0.681, n = 6). Newly-weaned Wistars allowed development of a mean proportion of S. venezuelensis of 0.298 (n = 4) compared with 0.013 (n = 4) of the same sample of larvae in adult hosts. Experiments with 75Se-labelled larvae established that S. venezuelensis effectively failed to migrate from skin to intestine

Losses to internal parasites in swine production.

Experimental infections of pigs with Strongyloides ransomi, Stephanurus dentatus, Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp. or Trichuris suis at increasing levels generally decrease daily gain and increase feed to gain ratio linearly. At lower, subclinical levels of infection, the feed to gain ratio typically is increased 3% to 6% by an infection. Based on low-level experimental infections with A. suum, the economic loss to producers in the U.S. from increased feed to gain ratio is estimated at $155 million annually.

Defective protective capacity of W/Wv mice against Strongyloides ratti infection and its reconstitution with bone marrow cells.

The susceptibility of congenitally anemic, and mast cell deficient W/Wv mice to infection with Strongyloides ratti was examined. After a primary infection, W/Wv mice showed greater and more persistent peak larval counts than did normal littermates. Worm expulsion was also slower in W/Wv mice than in +/+ mice. Furthermore, difference in susceptibility was expressed as early as 24 h after infection, suggesting not only that protective mechanisms of the gut but also of the connective tissue were defective in W/Wv mice. Reconstitution with bone marrow or spleen cells from +/+ mice was effective in

Light and electron microscopical studies of the location of Strongyloides ratti in the mouse intestine.

This study was designed to define the precise anatomical location of Strongyloides ratti in the intestinal mucosa of the mouse. Light microscopy showed adult worms in vacuoles in close relationship with the columnar epithelium. Serial sections indicated that the adults wound their way circuitously through the mucosa, usually close to the crypts. Portions of worms were sometimes seen in the intestinal lumen. Electron microscopy demonstrated that adult worms were situated between the epithelial cells. They were never observed to penetrate the basement lamina and enter the lamina propria. Enteroc

Effects of preintestinal larval antigenic stimuli on the generation of intestinal immunity in Strongyloides ratti infection in rats.

Generation of intestinal immunity by antigenic stimulation with preintestinal, tissue-migrating larvae was investigated in the Strongyloides ratti-rat model. The results of daily fecal egg counts showed that the intestinal immunity against adult worms could be partially generated by priming with preintestinal migrating larvae. A further study demonstrated that this partial reduction of daily fecal egg count was mainly the result of inhibitory effects on the fecundity of the parasitic females, although the expulsion of the parasite from the gut could be advanced by several days. After tertiary

[Cortico-adrenal reaction in rats to attempts of reinfestation by Strongyloides ratti (author's transl)].

After spontaneous recovery from infestation by Strongyloides ratti, reinfestation by a new generation of adult parasites is not possible if the primary infestation was by 5,000 or 10,000 larvae administered in one or more contacts and if the secondary infestation takes place 3 weeks after. Reinfestation becomes possible again 51 days after recovery from a primary infestation by 15,000 larvae. However although the larvae do not reach the adult stage, they do begin their migration and cause hypersecretion of gluco-cortico-steroids. There is thus a contrast between the ease with which the organis
