Shifting attentional priorities: control of spatial attention through hemispheric competition.

Regions of frontal and posterior parietal cortex are known to control the allocation of spatial attention across the visual field. However, the neural mechanisms underlying attentional control in the intact human brain remain unclear, with some studies supporting a hemispatial theory emphasizing a dominant function of the right hemisphere and others supporting an interhemispheric competition theory. We previously found neural evidence to support the latter account, in which topographically organized frontoparietal areas each generate a spatial bias, or "attentional weight," toward the contrala

Gait initiation impairments in both Essential Tremor and Parkinson's disease.

Gait initiation is a transitional task involving a voluntary shift from a static, stable position to a relatively less-stable state of locomotion. During gait initiation, anticipatory postural adjustments precede stepping in order to generate forward momentum while balance is maintained. While deficits in gait initiation are frequently reported for persons with Parkinson's disease, there is a paucity of information regarding gait initiation performance in persons with Essential Tremor. We investigated anticipatory postural adjustments and spatiotemporal characteristics of gait initiation in pe

Brain activation in the acute phase of traumatic spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate cortical reorganisation after traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). SETTING: Tartu University Hospital, Tartu, Estonia. METHODS: We studied six right-handed tetraplegic TSCI patients at 1, 3 and 12 months after the injury and 12 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Individuals performed simple test-rest cycles of flexion/extension of the right-hand fingers and flexion/extension of the right ankle during fMRI. The volumes of activation (VOA), ma

Imaging: What can it tell us about parkinsonian gait?

Functional neuroimaging has provided new tools to study cerebral gait control in Parkinson's disease (PD). First, imaging of blood flow functions has identified a supraspinal locomotor network that includes the (frontal) cortex, basal ganglia, brainstem tegmentum, and cerebellum. These studies also emphasize the cognitive and attentional dependency of gait in PD. Furthermore, gait in PD and related syndromes like progressive supranuclear palsy may be associated with dysfunction of the indirect, modulatory prefrontal-subthalamic-pedunculopontine loop of locomotor control. The direct, stereotype

Differential frontal involvement in shifts of internal and perceptual attention.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual attention enhances the processing of items in the environment, whereas internal attention enhances processing of items encoded in visual working memory. In perceptual and internal attention cueing paradigms, cues indicate the to-be-probed item before (pre-cueing) or after (retro-cueing) the memory display, respectively. Pre- and retro-cues confer similar behavioral accuracy benefits (pre-: 14-19%, retro-: 11-17%) and neuroimaging data show that they activate overlapping frontoparietal networks. Yet reports of behavioral and neuroimaging differences suggest that pre- and

Upper limb entheseal change with the transition to agriculture in the Southeastern United States: a view from Moundville and the central Tombigbee River valley.

We analyzed entheseal change in 159 skeletons from Moundville and surrounding settlements using primary fibrocartilaginous attachments of the upper limbs. Risk of entheseal change did not differ bilaterally, suggesting a wide variety of activities were used to exploit a diverse ecosystem. Consistent with predictions, Mississippian (1000-1500 CE) agriculturalists experienced greater risk of entheseal change than did Late Woodland (500-900 CE) hunter-gatherers. Attachments used in arm flexion were most affected, while rotator cuff entheses remained consistent over time. A temporal increase in mu

Individual and occupational factors related to fatal occupational injuries: a case-control study.

This study has been designed in order to identify factors increasing the risk of a fatal outcome when occupational accidents occur. The aim is to provide further evidence for the design and implementation of preventive measures in occupational settings. The Spanish Ministry of Labour registry of occupational injuries causing absence from work includes information on individual and occupational characteristics of injured workers and events. Registered fatal occupational injuries in 2001 (n=539) were compared to a sample of non-fatal injuries in the same year (n=3493). Risks for a fatal result o

Expectation-driven changes in cortical functional connectivity influence working memory and long-term memory performance.

Expectations generated by predictive cues increase the efficiency of perceptual processing for complex stimuli (e.g., faces, scenes); however, the impact this has on working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) has not yet been investigated. Here, healthy young adults performed delayed-recognition tasks that differed only in stimulus category expectations, while behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. Univariate and functional-connectivity analyses were used to examine expectation-driven, prestimulus neural modulation, networks that regulate this modulation,

The neural correlates of social attention: automatic orienting to social and nonsocial cues.

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction. It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orie

Gestational methylmercury exposure selectively increases the sensitivity of operant behavior to cocaine.

Developmental methylmercury (MeHg) exposure alters dopamine neurotransmitter systems, but the selectivity of this and the effects of low, environmentally relevant MeHg exposure regimens are poorly understood. In previous reports, some including littermates of animals studied here, chronic, low-level exposures affected performance on reversal tasks and enhanced reinforcer efficacy. Using high- and low-rate operant behavior under a fixed interval (FI) schedule, sensitivity was examined to drugs that target noradrenergic and dopaminergic neurotransmitter systems. Female rats were exposed in utero

Multiple voices in Charles Van Riper's desensitization therapy.

BACKGROUND: Charles Van Riper (1905-94) author, researcher and practitioner, was one of the major contributors to the field of stuttering in the 20th century. His series of Action Therapy videotapes provide a useful model of how therapy was implemented by a master clinician. AIMS: Van Riper's session with a client is analysed to reveal how voices are used by these two participants during desensitization therapy, and to demonstrate how Van Riper's expertise manifests itself during the session. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Interaction between Van Riper and a client during the desensitization stage of

Dorsal stream development in motion and structure-from-motion perception.

Little is known about the neural development underlying high order visual perception. For example, in detection of structures by coherently moving dots, motion information must interact with shape-based information to enable object recognition. Tasks involving these different motion-based discriminations are known to activate distinct specialized brain areas in adults. Here, we investigate neural development of normally developing children using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during perception of randomly moving point-light dots (RM), coherently moving dots that formed a 3D rotat

Opioid antagonism of cannabinoid effects: differences between marijuana smokers and nonmarijuana smokers.

In non-human animals, opioid antagonists block the reinforcing and discriminative-stimulus effects of Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while in human marijuana smokers, naltrexone (50 mg) enhances the reinforcing and subjective effects of THC. The objective of this study was to test a lower, more opioid-selective dose of naltrexone (12 mg) in combination with THC. The influence of marijuana-use history and sex was also investigated. Naltrexone (0, 12 mg) was administered 30 min before oral THC (0-40 mg) or methadone (0-10 mg) capsules, and subjective effects, task performance, pupillary di

Number processing and basal ganglia dysfunction: a single case study.

Numerical processing has never been investigated in a case of Fahr's disease (FD) and only rarely in cases of basal ganglia dysfunction. The study describes the cognitive decline of a pre-morbidly high-functioning patient (medical doctor) affected by FD and his difficulties in number processing. A MRI scan revealed bilateral calcifications in the basal ganglia and a brain PET showed a massive reduction of glucose metabolism in the basal ganglia and both frontal lobes, but no other brain abnormalities. The patient's cognitive deficits included impairments in problem solving, in cognitive set sh

Physiological strains while pushing or hauling.

An experiment has been designed to compare two ways of load moving: pushing with a bar or hauling with a pelvic belt, against the same resistances, at the same speeds. This study has been carried out in the laboratory on a treadmill, using two groups: 15 healthy sedentary men and 10 endurance trained male athletes. The task consisted of pushing or hauling against the same resistance (3, 5 and 7 kg for the first group and 6, 8, 9 and 10 kg for the second) at two walking speeds (3 and 4 km. h-1 for the first group and 3.7 and 4.7 km.h-1 for the second). The physiological strains were studied by

Auditory detection and perception in normal man and in patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency: effect of adrenal cortical steroids.

Auditory detection thresholds for sinusoidal tones and various tests of auditory perception were determined in 12 patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency (seven with Addison's disease and five with panhypopituitarism) and compared to those in normal volunteers. In adrenal cortical insufficiency auditory detection sensitivity was significantly more acute than normal, and judgments of loudness and of the contralateral threshold shift were made at levels more than 20 db below those of normal subjects. Thus both the lower and the upper limits of the dynamic auditory range are significantly de

Ask the experts: a practitioner-centred approach to resilience in emergency medical services.

Background: Resilience in high-stress occupations is commonly framed as a trait, an outcome, or the absence of psychopathology. None of these framings captures what practitioners in emergency medical services actually do, and interventions built on trait-based models have produced weak or inconsistent effects. Objective: This study argues that frontline resilience in emergency medical services is better understood as a domain-specific expert skill, and that work mode - a deliberately entered state, akin to an athlete's game face, in which the demands of the task rather than the emotional force
