Mondini deformity in a case of Turner syndrome. A radiological finding.

Turner syndrome (TS) is the human being's most frequent sex chromosome abnormality. Progressive sensorineural hearing loss is documented in more than 50% of the women affected by this syndrome. Although Mondini defect is the cochlear congenital malformation most frequently identified in other polymalformative syndromes, it has rarely been reported in TS. We describe the case of a 32-year-old woman with TS who presented progressive sensorineural hearing loss. The computed tomography of the ears showed bilateral Mondini deformity.

Medical management of Ménière's disease: a 10-year case series and review of literature.

Ménière's disease is frequent in our area. It is a disabling pathology that affects the patient's quality of life. Its etiology and pathophysiology remain unclear and there are some therapeutic alternatives with controversial results. We present our series and treatment protocol for Ménière's disease and discuss the current evidence regarding its medical treatment. In the last 10 years, 252 patients were diagnosed with Ménière's disease based on their symptoms, and the results of tonal audiometry, videonystagmography and caloric stimulation tests. All cases received medical treatment according

The video head impulse test: diagnostic accuracy in peripheral vestibulopathy.

BACKGROUND: The head impulse test (HIT) is a useful bedside test to identify peripheral vestibular deficits. However, such a deficit of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) may not be diagnosed because corrective saccades cannot always be detected by simple observation. The scleral search coil technique is the gold standard for HIT measurements, but it is not practical for routine testing or for acute patients, because they are required to wear an uncomfortable contact lens. OBJECTIVE: To develop an easy-to-use video HIT system (vHIT) as a clinical tool for identifying peripheral vestibular defi

Management of vestibular schwannomas in young patients-comparison of clinical features and outcome with adult patients.

OBJECTS: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) in young patients are rare. They are regarded to have different biological characteristics. Our objective is to analyze a series of such patients, with respect to their clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome and to compare the results to a matched series of adult patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 20 patients under 21 years of age. All patients underwent surgery via the retrosigmoid approach. The analysis included: age, gender, tumor size, clinical, and neurological pre- and postoperative status including cochlear and facial

Development of a vibrotactile tasking device for use in vestibular assessment.

The purpose of this study was to design an automated mental alerting task that could be utilized when performing vestibular testing on a broad range of patient populations, including certain difficult-to-test populations, such as the hard-of-hearing. A device was developed that utilized vibrotactile stimuli output to two vibrators placed on the subject's left leg, and responded to activation of two momentary pushbuttons controlled by the subjects. Fourteen normal-hearing subjects without history or symptoms of vestibular involvement participated. Each participant underwent three mental-alertin

Visual field dependence-independence before and after unilateral vestibular loss.

To investigate whether visual field dependence-independence changed after unilateral vestibular loss, Menière's patients were tested before and after unilateral vestibular neurotomy and compared with controls. Using the rod and frame test, visual vertical perception was tested under four visual contexts (with a frame tilted either clockwise or counterclockwise, with a vertical frame, and without visual reference). Both controls and Menière's patients before unilateral vestibular loss split into visual field dependent and independent subpopulations. Unilateral vestibular loss did not change thi

Autonomic nervous system activity associated with postural disturbances in patients with perilymphatic fistula: sympathetic or vagal origin?

The study focused on patients suffering from perilymphatic fistula (PLF), whether they had undergone surgery or not. Vestibular disturbances can be harmless but are associated with varying symptoms, demonstrating disorders within the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim was to test whether the orthosympathetic is involved as the vagal part is often suspected of eliciting a feeling of sickness. Non-invasive and uninterrupted recording of ANS activity represents an objectivation technique to evidence such disturbances. Electrodermal activity, thermovascular variables, instantaneous cardiac ra

The effects of roll vs. pitch rotation in humans under orthostatic stress.

BACKGROUND: It has been known since 1953 that pre-exposure to less than +1 Gz will reduce subsequent +Gz-tolerance. With few exceptions, during operational flying, the transition from hypogravity to hypergravity involves roll as well as pitch rotation. We examined the effect of roll vs. pitch rotation while undergoing transition from hypogravity to +1 Gz on a tilt table. METHODS: Twelve subjects (28-47 yr old) were rotated at 45 degrees x s(-1) from head-up (HU) at 15 degrees relative to gravitational vertical to 135 degrees head-down (HD) and back to the HU position after different HD dwell

Review of basic medical results of the Salyut-7--Soyuz-T 8-month manned flight.

This paper presents the results of medical investigations performed in the Salyut-7 8-month mission in which a professional physician took part. The paper contains anthropometric measurements, results of investigating the vestibular function, cardiovascular function at rest and in response to multi-step tests (with emphasis on echocardiographic measurements), metabolic parameters and hormonal status. It also discusses medical aspects of the extravehicular activity. The medical investigations, although some new methods were applied, provided the continuity of methodical approaches and data accu

Toxic and drug-induced disorders in otolaryngology.

Toxic and drug-induced disorders can be identified with alarming frequency. Otolaryngologists in the past were acutely aware of the ototoxic properties of certain medications but, with today's increasing armamentarium, new problems arise that may have an iatrogenic cause.

Characteristics of the sleep of men in simulated space flights.

A study of the sleep of men in simulated space flight has shown that, during different effects (diminished motor activity, noise, rotation), monotony and time of the exposure is the general pathogenetic factor producing sleep disturbances. The monotony factor was responsible for typical changes in sleep function (difficulty involved in falling asleep, disturbed continuity of sleep as a process, decline in the depth, etc.), whose degree was related not only to the professional importance of the experiment but also to the individual intolerance to the main exposure. In these cases, the action of

Imaging meets function: radiological and vestibular predictors of long-term cochlear implant outcomes in patients with Ménière disease.

INTRODUCTION: Although the proportion of Ménière disease (MD) patients who meet candidacy for CI remains relatively low, this subgroup has garnered increasing clinical interest. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of preoperative vestibular function and radiological markers of endolymphatic hydrops (EH) on long-term auditory outcomes after cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with definite Ménière’s disease (MD). METHODS: All patients underwent CI and were assessed using a dedicated 3T MRI hydrops protocol. Audiological outcomes were measured using pure-tone audiomet
