Inflammatory optic neuropathy (ON) is a rare event in Behçet's disease (BD). We report herein a series of ten BD Tunisian patients with ON and describe its clinical features among them. A retrospective review of BD patients (International Study Group for BD criteria) was performed. The patients were divided into two groups: those presenting an inflammatory ON, and those none. The diagnosis of inflammatory ON was based on the clinical examination, visual field and visual evoked potentials. We analyzed the characteristics of the two groups. Ten patients (2.3%) presented an inflammatory ON among

PURPOSE: Vision screening programs often rely on acuity measures to detect significant refractive error and clinicians use measures of acuity to monitor refractive treatment. This study investigated the effects of induced astigmatism on visual acuity (VA) using several paediatric acuity tests: the Keeler LogMAR crowded and single letter acuity tests, the single letter Sheridan Gardiner chart, and the crowded and single Kay picture tests.
METHODS: Six fully-corrected emmetropic adults had induced astigmatic blur imposed at different axes of astigmatism (90°, 180°, 135°, 45°). Astigmatic errors…

BACKGROUND: We present here the first report of a jugular bulb venous thrombosis after mild head injury, which lacked either a skull fracture or abnormal findings on CT scan.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old boy was hit on the back of the head and experienced headache and vomiting beginning the next morning. A CT scan and cranial x-ray examination failed to reveal any abnormal findings. The patient was treated conservatively; however, his headache and vomiting persisted. At 13 days after the injury, he began to show double vision due to left VIth nerve palsy and bilateral papilloedemas, sugges

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading cause of congenital viral infection, with an incidence of 0.5-3% of live births worldwide. Clinical evidence has shown hearing and vision loss, mental retardation and sometimes death in affected newborns. Primary maternal CMV infection during gestation poses a 40% risk of intrauterine transmission in contrast to recurrent infection. European laboratories have made significant progress in the last decade in solving diagnostic problems linked to infection in pregnancy. With the advances in CMV serology, such as detection of anti-CMV IgM by enzyme immunoassays

Cogan's syndrome is a rare, chronic inflammatory disorder that typically targets the eyes and vestibuloauditory apparatus, but it may also involve other organs. Three pediatric cases of Cogan's syndrome (ages 5, 13, and 18 years) are reported with long-term follow-up and complete and regular cochleovestibular functional evaluation and ophthalmologic and neurologic examinations. One case was a typical form (characterized by an interstitial keratitis and cochleovestibular impairment), whereas the other 2 cases were atypical forms with uveitis and polyarthritis. In all 3 cases, the first clinical

Thirty-one members of a family affected with X-linked ocular albinism (OA1) were studied to characterize the clinical phenotype and identify the disease-causing mutation. The family members were examined with ophthalmoscopy, electroretinography, and Goldmann perimetry. Linkage analysis was performed with markers from the OA1 locus. Exons 2 and 8 of the OA1 gene were assayed with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The six affected males had visual acuities ranging from 20/40 to 20/200. All had nystagmus, iris transillumination, and foveal hypoplasia. The eldest affected male had 20/40 vision

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The under-representation of vulnerable groups in clinical trials, including persons with disabilities, could affect the applicability of trial findings to real-world public health interventions. We undertook this study to assess the extent to which persons with disabilities are excluded due to non-inclusionary language use in protocols from clinical trial research in India.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective mixed-methods analysis of fully published clinical trial protocols relevant to India (January 2017 to December 2024), sourced from national and international

Presbyopia is a global problem with an estimated 1.3 billion patients worldwide. In the area of functional food applications, dietary supplements or herbs, there are very few reports describing the positive effects of their use. In the available literature, there is a lack of studies in humans as well as on an animal model of extracts containing, simultaneously, compounds from the polyphenol group (in particular, anthocyanins) and iridoids, so we undertook a study of the effects of a preparation composed of these compounds on a condition of the organ of vision. BACKGROUND: Traumatic eye complaints account for 3% of all hospital emergency department visits. The most common traumatic injury to the eye is blunt trauma, which accounts for 30% of these visits. Blunt trauma frequently leads to traumatic iridocyclitis, thus causing anterior uveitis. Iridocyclitis frequently causes tearing, photophobia, eye pain, and vision loss. These symptoms are a result of the inflammatory processes and ciliary spasms to iris muscles and sphincter. The inflammatory process is usually managed with topical corticosteroids, while the ciliary spasm is blunted by dilating the

BACKGROUND: Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) has a much lower incidence of immunologic reactions than penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for patients with keratoconus. However, it is unclear whether DALK is better on refractive outcomes than PK, due to its high postoperative myopia.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied the clinical records of keratoconus patients who underwent PK, DALK, or predescemetic DALK (pre-DALK, DALK with residual stroma) between June 2004 and September 2008. The main outcome measures included refractive sphere, manifest cylinder, corneal power, keratometric astigm
