Characterization of dimethacrylate polymeric networks: a study of the crosslinked structure formed by monomers used in dental composites.

The resin phase of dental composites is mainly composed of combinations of dimethacrylate comonomers, with final polymeric network structure defined by monomer type/reactivity and degree of conversion. This fundamental study evaluates how increasing concentrations of the flexible triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) influences void formation in bisphenol A diglycidyl dimethacrylate (BisGMA) co-polymerizations and correlates this aspect of network structure with reaction kinetic parameters and macroscopic volumetric shrinkage. Photopolymerization kinetics was followed in real-time by a ne

Cytotoxic and xenoestrogenic effects via biotransformation of trans-anethole on isolated rat hepatocytes and cultured MCF-7 human breast cancer cells.

The metabolism and action of trans-anethole (anethole) and the estrogen-like activity of the compound and its metabolites were studied in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes and cultured MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, respectively. The incubation of hepatocytes with anethole (0.25-2.0mM) caused a concentration- and time-dependent cell death accompanied by losses of cellular ATP and adenine nucleotide pools. Anethole at a weakly toxic level (0.5mM) was metabolized to 4-methoxycinnamic acid (4MCA), 4-hydroxy-1-propenylbenzene (4OHPB), and the monosulfate conjugate of 4OHPB; the levels of 4OHPB su

Does composite repair time affect repair protocol, immediate or delayed?

BACKGROUND: Composite resin restorations frequently require repair due to fractures, marginal defects, or esthetic failures. The effectiveness of composite repair depends heavily on the surface treatment applied prior to bonding. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of various surface treatment protocols on the shear bond strength(SBS) between composite resin layers in same-visit immediate repair(IR) and delayed repair (DR) conditions, using bulk-fill and nanohybrid composite resins. METHODS: Two types of composite resin materials—NeoSpectra ST HV (nanohybrid) and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-Fill—

Do collagen cross-linkers improve dentin's bonding receptiveness?

OBJECTIVES: Dentin biomodification using collagen cross-linkers has been proposed as one of the strategies to improve bond durability of adhesives to dentin. However, literature is not very consistent regarding their benefit, in particular when cross-linkers are applied in clinically realistic application times. This study investigated the effect of three cross-linkers on the mini-interfacial fracture toughness (mini-iFT) of four adhesives bonded to dentin following either etch&rinse (E&R) or self-etch (SE) modes. METHODS: 60 molars were randomly divided in accordance with the three variables

Artificial caries around restorations in roots.

An artificial caries technique was used to produce caries-like lesions in the cavity walls adjacent to microfilled resin restorations with and without dentin bonding agent, and glass-ionomer cement restorations, in the roots of extracted teeth. The lesions had histological characteristics similar to those of natural lesions and to those of the lesions produced by other experimental methods. The zonal pattern of the lesions was examined by means of polarized light microscopy and microradiography, and the depth of the lesions was measured for assessment of the microleakage around the restoration

Effect of Argon/Oxygen Low-Temperature Plasma on Degree of Conversion and Bond Strength of Resin Cements to Dentin.

PURPOSE: Low-temperature plasma (LTP) has been used as an option for dentin surface treatment prior to adhesion due to its antibacterial effect without causing substantial changes to the dentin surface. However, few studies have reported the influence of argon combined with oxygen on the degree of conversion of resin cements or the adhesive luting procedure. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of LTP pretreatment of dentin on the degree of conversion of resin cements, as well as the effect on bond strength to dentin of different adhesion luting protocols. Can Resin Monomers and By-Products Damage Collagen?

Hybrid layers degrade due to endogenous collagenolytic enzymes and adhesive hydrolysis. Adhesive hydrolysis releases by-products that, along with uncured monomers, may have an adverse effect on collagen fibrils and contribute to the dissolution of the hybrid layer in resin-dentin bonds. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of methacrylate monomers and corresponding by-products on collagen type I. Tendon fibers (TFs) from mouse tail were incubated with BisGMA 0.1%, BisEMA 0.1%, UDMA 0.1%, HEMA 0.1%, TEG-DMA 0.1%, methacrylic acid 0.025% (MAA), pyruvic acid 0.025% (PA), trypsin a
